On one hand, I've never heard a good thing about this game
On the other hand I'd love to learn more about Europa and apparently Ys Strategy details the world alot better.
Do I play it? Or is it really not very good?

Not worth it.
Also, good things ARE said about the game: the soundtrack is amazing. And enormous.
I'll eventually go through it myself, but right now I'm not in the mood. And I won't be for a long time.
By the way, nothing about the story is canon. xD I'm not sure, but maybe you could see it like the "cousin of Ys Online" on that regard.

Is the soundtrack remixes of old themes or something? Was there an OST release?
Also, yeah, if it's not even the canon Europa then maybe I'll hold off. Mainly I was curious to see about Altago without waiting for Ys Seven

There was no official OST release, but rips are available. It was uploaded in the Spam Thread at some point, even. xD
Most of the tracks are original, but there are indeed a few Ys remixes.

I was planning on diving through the tiles of the ROM and see what sprites I can dig up from it even though I heard it was awful. I could rip the music too if I knew how to work with .sdat files.

Yes, that's the official, horribly incomplete soundtrack that was released. I've said it many times. This game may be bad, but the soundtrack is great! There is a remix of Fountain of Love that is awesome in it! Maybe I'll put it on youtube. Here it is!

Interesting, I didn't know about the OST release, despite being an incomplete, crappy one.

I got mine from a Yahoo Japan auction. It came with the game, and it says "not for sale", so I guess it was some kind of pre-order bonus.

Just finished listening through it
Eeeh, I dunno. They're not bad, but they all sort of blend together. Almost all of the what I'm guessing are battle tracks use the same instruments and they are all really samey. Who did this, Motoi Sakuraba!? (hold for laughter)
But seriously though, based on what I've been told I think I'll stay far, far away from this one

Yes, it just really IS that bad...
And this is coming from a game geography fan who would like nothing more than to play through it just for the sheer documentation about the various new areas visited in the game and how it all relates to the other Ys locations in the series.
But I seriously can't stand it. The gameplay is so primitive it's not funny, the graphics are terrible, the script is boring and the characters are not memorable in the least. I can't even force myself to play through it just to gather map data.
Good luck though if you try. : )

Think of it as an "Ys V OST cousin" if you will. XD If you know what I mean.

Ys V OST is great, specially the symphonic version.

No doubt, Ys V OST is great. But the instrumentation of all the songs are waaaaaaaaaay too similar, and not that creative or catchy. But despite that, most of the tracks are still really good.
The very same applies to Ys Strategy, that's what I meant. xD
(By the way, I can upload Ys V's soundtrack, if you want. I have listened to it quite many times. Same for Ys Strategy's, thanks to GMF. xD)

You can look in Deuce's page before it closes down. legacyofys.classicgaming.gamespy.com/I agree with Red that the songs do kinda blend with each other, but try listening to the orchestral version, that's beautiful.

You can't download anything from that page, it would appear... Just tested it (downloaded Ys V Orchestral Version), and it's still working. You just need to register at FilePlanet for free. I recommend doing so as the music section in Deuce's site is really great.
