i found a FAQS that calls the oasis (spring in dessert). maybe Ill name it that. anyway I think I'll skip on mapping the interior of the towns & villages and naming the chests. I'm just going to try to finish this ASAP. As for the in game world map, I cant seem to get it complete but what do you think? Attachments:

Looks fine. I'm pretty certain you can't get full coverage on the thing anyways.

Use GameFAQs' walkthrough for V. My pattern of play on PC is: Ys I - II Vanished Omen Ys III Oath In Felghana Ys V Expert (with FAQ) Ys VI ...and hopefully Origin.

The Ys V translation patch is neither done nor released, which is what nayrex meant. Ys V *is* the last Ys game remaining that doesn't have an English translation. If you meant that it's translated, then IIRC, Deuce did finish translating it a long time ago -- but Gideon Zhi is still at work on the hack itself. Really, I'd rather have someone else fill in for me here, as I don't want to leave you with any misinformation.

Do you guys just hack it with a hex editor? That would be very very difficult, I've seen hex and I wouldn't even know where to start!

Gideon Zhi, from Aeon Genesis translations, is the one currently creating a patch for Ys V, so I guess you'd have to ask him about that.

I think the way they normally do it is to hack the game through savestates. Where they can see the information piece by piece and then edit the code accordingly. This is only judging by some documentation one of the guys behind the Policenauts English patch (slowbeef) did, so I could be wrong.

That's one of the ways they do it, but the preferred method is to use an emulator with debugging support. Unfortunately oftentimes emulators don't include that support and hackers have to rely on other methods to read the code as it's outputted. Thankfully bSNES supports debugging and a modified version of SNES9x does too.

I think he's probably still working on it. He posted this last May, in this very thread: Alright, I suppose I'd better leave this here too... Time for some before-and-after. One of these is how the game looked yesterday. One is today. I'll leave it up to you to figure out which is which.

Yeah, there probably isn't any harm in letting others help, if there are such people, and they're willing to help (but maybe he already has help?). Anyway, I suspect the translation is long since done, it's probably just properly re-inserting the text back into the game (the glitchy screenshot seems to confirm that - no way that's how it looked originally, I'd imagine). For some games, that is supposedly a real chore (if you've heard of it, the translation patches for Mystic Ark took quite some time for that very reason - both Gideon's, as well as the group that worked on it before he did).

Apologies if this has been asked/answered before, but do we know if Gideon is going to also make a patch for Ys V Expert, or is it just the original version? It seems reasonable to assume that a Ys V Expert patch would be available as well, but the games are effectively different versions, after all, so I can't help but wonder if that would add any more complications to getting this project finished.

I'm confident a single patch won't work for both like so: some work will have to be redone. At most it might not be very visible by "bundling" two patchs into one, so that somehow the right one is applied to the given ROM.
I'm personally not sure if he plans to make a patch for Ys V Expert, but really, I'm not sure if he plans to make a patch for either one, or let some other soul get some interest to work on it... It's quite sad.

Ah that sucks. You mean the Expert version is not the one getting the patch? I figured it would be since apparently the original is supposed to be too easy. And the Expert one is not really that hard, but more like normal difficulty.
... Can anyone who played these games give an accurate confirmation of the difficulty levels of these two versions? Is the original really that easy and the expert just right?

Also, to tag on to Sinful's questions, are there any other differences in the games besides dificulty?

Well, I don't know which one is (was?) being worked on, but if I had to guess, it'd be the original Ys V, simply because it's more accessible. Not everyone wants a challenging game, after all. Some will probably play it just for the story, and of course, I'll be trying to find glitches (difficulty can get in the way of that, sometimes). Who knows, maybe the Expert version is the one being translated, but I don't see anything other than a passing mention of it on the project page. As for the difficulty, I'm not sure about Ys V Expert, but the original one is indeed a bit on the easy side; I don't think it's too bad, though. I did give Expert a quick try, and saw that the enemies moved faster. I think their strength/defense might be higher as well. Aside from that, there's also a Time Attack mode in Expert (probably need to beat the game first, though). Dunno if there's anything else new or not.

Anyone with enough talent to make an English patch for Ys V/Ys V Expert, would've already done it. Just because one guy is working(?) on the patch, doesn't mean that no one else can, no matter what the guy says. As I mentioned over the course of time, it's not quite like so, because by not dropping projects, if a hacker picks Ys V to translate then see it is supposedly already worked on, most hackers wouldn't spend any more time on it. This has already happened with some of Gideon's projects (Fire Emblem: The Mystery of the Emblem for SNES: in this one in particular, to summarize, someone picked it, then Gideon popped up to the guy and went "leave it to me, I'm working on it", then the guy waited an year, saw project didn't even MOVE, then he said f it and finished the project himself, which Gideon had halted until then). Things like that (not wanting to pick up an already taken project) has already happened with ALoY member rx782 as he talks about that and other things in his blog of his (oops, except apparently he deleted the entry. But it was basically a long rant as to why translating games/animes sucks. I tried to retrieve it with wayback machine, but apparently the last snapshot it took was in 2009, so it isn't here.
