I literally JUST got a Wii, and I'm already thinking about modding it. Can someone weigh the benefits vs. negatives? I'd like a bit of an argument here, like the PSP thread. I wanna TASTE both sides of the story.

I have really no idea about modding consoles, and especially what one would get out of modding a wii. But from the reasonable side of the argument, I'd say don't screw around w/ something that's new, let the warranty expire first

Bootloader, enjoy region free Wii.
Thats about all I bother/cared to do with mine. Was sick of a lot of titles I was interested in being released only in Japan. Middle finger to NoA, kthx.

Yeah, for homebrew channel. That's basically the idea, and I'd imagine there'd be some mean emulators on there, considering the VC and all.

I'm gonna mod my Wii so I can play games off a USB stick. That sounds amazingly sweet.

Hmm, that does sound rather nice... I imagine emulators would be just like VC?

From what I hear there are great emulators for the Wii, yeah.

As far as I'd know that would only make sense.

Homebrew Channel takes all of 2 minutes to install and is worth it. I only have emulators for SNES, GB/C/A, NES, TG16/TCD as well as SCUMMVM and TyrianWii. but they all look beautiful. My Wii as viewed as a dedicated hardware upscaler is better AND cheaper than my XRGB-2+ upscaler ;P
I use a 2GB SD card for all my stuff with only the Homebrew Channel installed on the Wii itself.
Oh, also I tried an N64 emulator once for Winback and it didn't work out so well... So maybe just the older stuff is really nice.

Modding gets fun when you have to upgrade the firmware. :P But since you just got your Wii, you're probably already running 4.whatever so you didn't have to go through my pain. I've actually downgraded mine before when it was on 3.4U or 3.3U download 3.2U (or whatever it was) just so I could use the Preloader application. Then I got the bright idea that I wanted to play back-ups and access the Nintendo and Shop channels again (I couldn't do it without upgrading the firmware. It worked for the longest time without the need to move to 4.whatever but it eventually caught up with me. :() so I upgraded to 4.whatever. It took hours and a lot of research to do all of this and to make things work. :P However, the end result is very spiffy! I can play imports (NTSC and PAL), play back-ups, play retail versions of games, cheat like a mofo ... whee! Fun reads here: gbatemp.net/index.php?s=210fd26ee8971e633b33561360815319&showforum=108

*nods* It IS a pain in the ass, but it's worth it. I actually still don't have ALL of the mods I want done yet, it's way too overcomplicated for my tastes... like I can REALLY understand half of that bullshit on the wiki!

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to do this. It just isn't my taste.

I have a pretty easy-to-follow guide but it's just longer and the steps are more complicated than when I modded the PSP, and the Wii has like... 2 games I want to play that I haven't already, so whatever.

Alright, last night, I managed to get a decent connection on my Wii, so I just used TBR on it and modified my Wii with StartPatch. I used it on IOS 36 though instead of 429; hopefully that won't be an issue. If it will be though, I did dump my NAND to the SD card beforehand.
At any rate, I should be prepared for when my PC Engine (GillianSeed) package arrives. Hopefully the PCE emulators for the Wii are good, but from what I can tell, one won't permit sound CDDA BGM, and the other is apparently not all that popular at 3 stars.

Alright, so the PCE emulators for the Wii do not run actual PCE discs. I'm SOL yet again!

Alright, so the PCE emulators for the Wii do not run actual PCE discs. I'm SOL yet again! I was wondering that. I've had some PCE emus on my Wii for a while but don't know how to build a proper TOC for the life of me so I haven't been able to play Ys IV in English yet ;A;

I'll get on that TOC business as soon as I have access to my computer -- give that about 2-3 months.
