Does anyone know of any good GBA games that are in the spirit of either Ys style of games - and/or FF?
I played FF I and II - and Baldur's Gate - on the GBA years ago and thought it was great so if there is anything else like Ys/FF (or any kinda JRPG) - I'd love to know.

Try the Golden Sun games. There are tons of other GBA games, but it's been so long since I played any that I can't remember them. Oh yeah, you could try out Sword of Mana and Fire Emblem too, they aren't like Ys or FF but they're great games.

Shining Soul 2 is a very good Diablo-esque loot and grind RPG with sort of an Ys aesthetic.

Fire Emblem's a strategy RPG too, so if Super Robot Wars interests you, then FE should be right up your alley as well. OG1 and 2 are great games, btw. A and D are in Japanese, but if that doesn't bother you then I'd imagine they're fine too.

Fire Emblem - one of the best SRPGs ever made. Good story, good challenge, just all-around fun. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones - Lower the difficulty of the former such that the game becomes insultingly simple, then you have it. Still fun, for what it's worth, but not hard by any stretch. The game throws like 7 god-mode weapons at you and by the end of the game you won't be taking any damage from any enemies and you'll pretty much molesting even the final boss in the blink of an eye. Pretty silly. Advance Wars - SRPG minus the SRPG? Plays on a grid like most SRPGs, but it's just typical units like in an RTS. There are no stats here. It's very fun and very challenging, though. Made by the same team as Fire Emblem, no less! Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand - Totally awesome sunlight-based (you literally have to play it in the sunlight) vampire killing game by Hideo Kojima that nobody ever talks about. All 3 Castlevania games (Aria of Sorrow/Harmony of Dissonance/Circle of the Moon) I second both Golden Sun games, as they were excellent. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror - Kirby meets Metroidvania. I loved it, not everyone does, though. Both Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission. Not all of those are Ys or FF-like, but excellent in their own right.

Sacred Stones has more complicated mechanics, actually, but you're right that the actual difficulty got toned down a lot. Try Hector Hard Mode in FE7, that mode requires actual thinking.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply anything about the mechanics at all, just that the game required little to no strategy. And I actually completed a Hector hard mode run, it was great fun.

Awesome, I had a good time with it too. You should try FE4 and/or 6. 6 is a sequel to FE7 (the one just called Fire Emblem outside of Japan) and there's a translation patch. There's also a patch for FE4, I can link you up if you'd like.
FE4 is for the SNES though, but FE6 is for the GBA.

Thirding Golden Sun, also known as my favorite traditional JRPG ever. Boktai (and its sequel) get my recommendation, as well.
Skip Harmony of Dissonance unless you like mediocrity, but make sure to check out Aria of Sorrow and DEFINITELY Circle of the Moon, which is one of my favorite games in the series.
And just so I don't repeat what everyone else has said, I'm throwing in Astro Boy: Omega Factor, aka the greatest GBA game of all time, and Iridion II, if you're into arcade shooters. Omega Factor has some RPG elements, but is overall a side-scrolling action game, so you might not love it as much as I do.
There's also the Breath of Fire ports. Even though some people don't like them, I thought they were quite good. They're a bit FF-like.
... and on a completely different note, Drill Dozer. I'm really not a GBA buff, so I can't recommend much else. :/

I know of the series' older games and translations, I just... basically hate emulating. I can't say why, other than I probably prefer playing things on their native console, given the option. Not given the option, I'm not sure why I decide not playing a game is better, but... I tend to. I've often considered importing FE6, though~

That's why I emulated Mother 3 on my PSP and Wii. I also beat it on my GBA -- the *original* cart, that is. It's still mint with the booklet, etc. too!

... how the hell did I forget Mother 3?
One of the best RPGs out there, if only because of its dialogue.

I fifth both the Golden Suns. XD They had to be THE best titles on the GBA, followed up closely (for me) by Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis. Speaking of which, no recommendations for Tactics Ogre yet? :'D The Breath of Fire games were quite fun too! Made even more so because I'd never gotten the chance to play the first two ever. :'D (I wonder if they still work for me....) And lastly, has anyone mentioned the zillionth Lunar port/remake/thing for one's GBA? I never got it to work, but assuming that it's Lunar SS, with that amazing story that it's got, it bound to be fun in any form! ....I can't remember what else I played and loved. I'm going senile. I do remember playing all the Castlevanias and loving them loads! :'D (Oh, and, naturally the Fire Emblem stuff. But ye all have mentioned that too!)

Lunar Legend was the GBA port. It was the first Lunar game I'd played, but a lot of stuff was cut out of it, apparently. Cutscenes, first and foremost~ I actually had FFTA on my list for a matter of 30 seconds before I deleted it. It's got the combat system down, but I can't recommend that game to anyone who likes a good plot with a straight face. The storyline was such a throwaway. Given the legacy it had to live up to, they could have at least tried to make an interesting plot. =/ And I totally forgot both of the Breath of Fire games. Guess since they're ports, eh? But yeah, those be excellent.
