Hey, like any FF game has a good plot Still, it's one of the most fun games to play. It's mostly about those side missions anyway. One thing most JRPGs miss that it has - good side-missions and lots of stuff to do beside the main quest. Also, FFTA2 is even more of the same fun.

Both the FFTA games are garbage if you ask me and anyone else with decent taste. And yeah, JRPGs have plenty of sidequests if you play the right ones.

FFT is overrated. Massively. The story is trying too hard, and the gameplay is extremely unbalanced. FFTA >>>>> FFT even though storywise they're about equally bad.
The ones I've played are pretty bare-boned in terms of side-quests. Numbered FF games, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana etc. It's either that, or the game forcing you to do completely random stuff to progress the story (like Legend of Mana). So maybe I missed out on some. Or maybe it has something to do with the definition of a "side quest". Still, just about all JRPGs are completely linear so side-quests provide little other than extra loot anyway.

But all jokes aside, I'm glad we agree FFT had a great story and that FFTA is the worst SRPG ever. And linearity helps the pacing of the story. Look at Oblivion, for example, that game is extremely nonlinear, but the main plot is so horrible it makes me cringe. Of course, most JRPG plots aren't epic masterpieces either, but excessive nonlinearity isn't necessarily better than linearity.

Oblivion is also a horrible game. Beth hasn't made anything decent since Daggerfall, or so I hear, because I never liked any of their games. Also, it isn't "nonlinear" it's "sandbox" which is sort of different. IIRC, the game only has one ending so that isn't really nonlinearity.
The best example would be Fallout. You have a short main quest that you can finish fairly quickly, but then you also have world exploration, and every location somehow contributes to the story and the setting, giving you alternative ways to solve problems. Most of your decisions then affect the solutions available, and ultimately the ending sequence.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I've youtube'd all of the ones I could find and looked around on my own as well and my..uh...'trimmed' down list of games that, to me, looks really interesting and are going into the bucket of 'games to find locally' (well, at least two of them for now):
- Advance Guardian Heroes (Surprised no one mentioned this RPG. Great GBA graphics and what seems like excellent battle mode).
- Army Men Advance (Clean, simple graphics and simple gameplay - could be a winner..)
- Breath of Fire (This one looks like a lot of fun. I ike a good FF clone as much as the next one)
- Dragonball Advanced Adventure (Gorgeous (for GBA) looking side-scrolling kick-hit'em game. Seems to have somewhat of a story as well).
- Drill Dozer (Thanks for recommending this one, looks totally awesome and a game I had never heard of!)
- Final Fantasy I and II (I actually completed FF I on the GBA waaaay back when..and wouldn't mind playing through II on my tablet using the emulator).
- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (What can I say...I'm a sucker for FF)
- Fire Emblem (Thanks for the recommendations of this one, checked it out and it looks really good, maybe one of the games I'm most excited about).
- Golden Sun (Heard about this one before, seems like a lot of people enjoy it. Checking it out more)
- Lunar Legend (Another one I had never heard about (so thanks again) and looks promising).
- Scurge: Hive (Darn, that looks fun!)
- Shining Soul II (Thanks again, looks fun)
- Star Wars Episode III (Really like the graphics here and gameplay seems good - could be a turd though)
- Summon Night: Swordcraft story (Looks nice...)
- Super Robot Taisen OG
- Sword of Mana (Once again, good tip)
Not reading Japanese I had to skip Mother 3 (as far as I know there's no English GBA version out there) - and even though Boktai seems interesting I read that it needs to be run on the actual GBA unit as it's using a light-sensor in the game).

Mother 3 DOES have an English translation patch, though! ...but aside from that, if you're really not crazy about emulation, I don't blame you; but Mother 3 is really cool!

To me the best GBA game was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past + Four Swords. Especially if you have someone to play it with.

I also highly recommend that game. Though, expect to shed tears here and there during your playthrough. xD Such a sad and beautiful game.

I know! I used to play Four Swords all the time with my mom, letting her use the TV (Gamecube + GBA Player Adapter). I miss that game... seriously, I wish I could figure out how to hack it and make it single-player!

Wow, that would be awesome. xD Though, I guess there's Four Swords Adventures on the GC for that. xD But yeah, I know it's not the same thing. I also really liked how the progresses done in both games influenced one another. Learning thw Whirlwind Slash on FS was reeeeeally helpful. Same for the magic beam, though it kinda sucked when you accidentaly hit your companion with it and pushed him. XD I threw him and got thrown into abysses, lava etc. quite often. xD There's also a Rupee bug with the rare Chain Chomb item. xD Fill up all players' HP to enter Rupee Fever mode, then let the Chain chomb bash into an ally and some rupees you had will drop. But when you pick them up again, they will be doubled. xD I thought of trying to get 99999 Rupees with this, but my friend's GBA was the old model, which still made use of removable batteries, so his GBA wouldn't live enough. xD (I could leave my GBA SP connected in a wall outlet though.)

Nope, not off-topic at all. I suggest A Link to the Past / Four Swords GBA!

Oi!!!!!! :'''''D *is one with non-decent taste? * Seriously though, I think one of the main reason why I found FFTA most enjoyable were the sidequests, as ausdoerrt mentioned. Add to that a half decent and sort of sweet sounding tinkly soundtrack, and a VERY beautiful world, and I was quite pleased. The story itself was quite a watered down 'kiddy' joke to me. Marche being a pale imitation of Ramza, and with very rotten excuse of heroic motives kind of spoilt everything. but even with all that, it was pretty much more than a fun game for I! :'D We're not comparing this game to the original FFT or Vagrant Story (or even FFXII)~! No ho! Those be god-tiered games for me! This was simply.... great fun.
