Well, hey. Sony made the mistake with the PSP Go so now it's Nintendo's turn to do something stupid.
I wonder what Microsoft's dumbass mistake will be? (Natal?)

Um... Sony has been doing this over the last 4 months. I think we are about to see some new consoles hit in the next year or so, thus beginning the PR war that we always see. If you read all of the buzz, Nintendo is very keen on putting 3d capability into a new console, but they are very much against needing the use of glasses, or special eye wear to achieve its goal. You know what this means? It means Nintendo is just throwing out asshole PR against Sony's claims. They are trying to 1up them, and it seems to be working. There is more information here: waxingerratic.wordpress.com/2010/03/23/glasses-not-required-or-how-sony-had-a-heart-attack-this-morning/I'm also curious as to why everyone is so against this. They haven't seen the console, what it can do, or how the games will display. How do you really know you are "against" it? Yes, basing this new console on one that came out over 10 years ago is the logical thing to do, especially when that specific console was a huge financial bomb (Even firing the Gameboy creator over the mess, THE GAMEBOY CREATOR!). Nintendo is sure quick to jump back on that bandwagon. Yes...

How is this a bad idea? I think it'd be cool if they put a screen like on the new glasses over the screen directly, fixing it straight on the game console to be 3-D viewed.
As long as it has bigger buttons than the DS did I'd be pretty cool with this.

Well, apparently it's just going to be ANOTHER new DS model with 3D simulation, a '3D joystick', force feedback, and likely an accelerometer. It's also going to be freaking gigantic.

I should've known the Reggie pic was coming. Well played. I'm also curious as to why everyone is so against this. They haven't seen the console, what it can do, or how the games will display. How do you really know you are "against" it? Because it's got fake-3D screens, that's how I know. What the thing looks like and what it can do is irrelevant if just playing it is going to give me migraines. This 3D craze is a stupid gimmick that needs to crawl back into its hole and die already. It's bad enough it's being shoved into TVs all over the place, never mind sticking it on handheld consoles where I can't just use a regular old screen. Damn you, James Cameron. This is all your fault.

Yeah but... we havne't seen it in practice yet. You have seen Avatar, right? It is pretty cool, and I don't see how a single OPTIONAL purchase is a bad thing. There are going to be 3 models on the market, each catering to a cartain audience. If you aren't the audience, then don't buy it. I fail to see how inventive incentives are a bad thing in the gaming industry. Without it, we'd still be playing Ys (Y ' S) on Master System. And yeah, before I get the Falcom grammar police on my ass, that " ' " was intentional. (WTF??, the overmind saw fit to censor the printed title of the SMS game... thumbs up! )
I'm with you Varion, trust me. I doubt that I'll even buy or care about the thing. Still, I don't get the conservative nature of being against moving forward. Sometimes it takes a thousand mistakes before we get something good. If Sony, Nintendo, and Micro$oft need to learn the hard way, so be it. You know very well that trial and error is the one true method of human understanding.
I think it is cool to harp on the console once we've seen it in practice. Until then, we're just ranting on speculation, and personal emotions. Lets be straight here: 3D is dumb, and it isn't really something we want. The dual screen Gameboy was the same thing though, and now we can't really go back. While there will be some big shortcomings with the direction these companies are taking, we can also expect new discovery and applications to gaming. The only people benefiting here is us. We have the power, because we have the money that they want. If it sucks, don't support it. If it rules, then spend spend spend. The big companies know, and understand this to a T. I guess what I'm getting at is keep positive on the whole ordeal. It is coming whether we want it to or not.

I can kind of understand the bitterness here, but... I'm not really feeling it, myself. The fact that it doesn't use technology that requires 3D glasses makes it significantly different than most other "3D" out there (some of which works well for me, some... not so much). The official announcement had me thinking that it was just going to be head tracking (like this DSiWare game or this Wiimote head tracking demo) rather than anything more overt -- and it would just create a cool, subtle effect. Any game that uses it as much more than that will probably just end up gimmicky rather than genuinely revolutionary, and (like the DS before it) you'll have to wait for the fad to die down before the genuinely interesting games crop up. Still, though: How much cooler would a first-person dungeon crawler be in 3D, even if nothing else changes? It could be neat, but there's so little information out there on what it is, how it works, and how developers will end up using it that it's hard for me to react very strongly to it either way. We'll see how it turns out.

There are going to be 3 models on the market, each catering to a cartain audience. Do you know something I don't? Because that's the first I've heard about three models of this thing. I think we mostly agree here though. I'm all for learning by mistakes, but my concern is that everyone's pushing for this 3D stupidity and if everyone's going to bite on it, then it won't go away. 3D TVs are less of an issue because no one's stupid enough to alienate a sizeable chunk of their fanbase by making games 3D only. Handhelds though? I'll maintain hope you can disable the 3D effect at least. Of course, if the thing also uses LED screens, that's that, I'm out. That was my original worry for the next batch of handhelds, not 3D. Not sure what type of screen the Parallax Barrier technology everyone suspects they'll be using requires.

Not the same thing though, the 3DS is a totally new handheld generation of its own. You can't just go and play its games on the DS Lite or DSi ;p

LMAO! I read through the official press release, and it is indeed a new dynasty DS release. It does mention that DSiware, and DS titles are fully back compatible. www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2010/100323e.pdfOne thing I think we can all agree on here, is that waiting is the smartest thing to do. We all know Nintendo will have v2 of this thing out in less than a year

If they really are going to make Pokemon Gen 5 a launch title or close to it though, this is going to fly off the shelves faster than a Nintendo product has ever flown before.

So, Nintendo on the gimmick train once more. Pff, well, after they made Wii they could only get worse and worse.
But wyrdy, the touchscreen on the DS actually makes sense and works well. It's the first handheld I've seen to have RTS, and that's something.

I sigh at the advent of 3D this and 3D that. I also blame James Cameron for this!
I hope that 3D TVs don't take off because that would mean EVERYTHING will eventually be in 3D and mean that I would need a new TV!
Well, if it DOES take off, then I hope it'll only become the norm after, say, 60 years. XD
Hirm! That's a lot of hate, wyrd!

Yeah, but his beliefs are Miisanthropic (notice the Mii ) so they don't count haha. No, I get where he is coming from, but I have found a ton of exclusive titles on the Wii that are great. I have amassed a combination of titles that feature both old school, and motion controls. I'm happy with it, but wish there was more customer support for 3rd party exclusives. Most people will avoid buying on Wii because their Gamercock tells them not to. It isn't hardcore to support the console... I blame the parents, and President Obama.
