Yo guys, get on this with the quickness. Torchlight, a very good Diablo-esque type game, is on sale at Steam this weekend. The game is only $5 for the next 2 days, which makes this a fantastic opportunity to snag the game. Links and info here.

It's not just diabloesque, it's made by many of the same team (composer, programmer, etc) who made diablo and diablo 2.
After realizing how shitty the game companies are these days, after they got fired so they didn't get paid any more royalties, they started up their own company and made torchlight.
If you're looking for anything other than a click fest of snooze, play it on it's highest difficulty. It's still somewhat easy but not as boring.

tiny YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN.
Actually, I played it until the story's end but didn't bother with the too-many-floors optional dungeon or all the quests.
For me, these types of games are only fun for about the first hour.
wyrd's aversion to the mouse fascinates me!

I agree entirely. The only time a mouse was acceptable, was during the Tierra remake of King's Quest I, and the official build of King's Quest V.
That's not to say I'm uninterested in 7th Guest, Myst (which pisses me off, actually) and Connections. Those are all good mouse games, since they keep you somewhat connected.

I don't mind it, but it has to fit the game. Really, it just streamlines 3 button presses down to one, which is something this game benefits from. I use a ranged character, which needs to be controlled using constant, quick, directive attacks that a controller would make needlessly difficult.

Wait, yeah, Wyrd, what about adventure games? You said you liked Indy, what about the LucasArts one?
Or Monkey Island!
OR THE CHZO MYTHOS!
D:> Hath thee no love for these?!

This might sound funny, but you can actually fully control all the good Indy games via keyboard (and thus, via gamepad!)
Same goes with monkey island or really any of the Scumm GUI games.

Really? I thought you needed a mouse! That's how I've always played them...

It's a fun game but playing the spellcaster class is weird because you do ranged damage with wands and staves that completely outperforms most of your spells, essentially making you an archer more than a wizardy type.

Really? I thought you needed a mouse! That's how I've always played them... Some of the very early Scumm games would require a mouse (Monkey Island original, Loom, Maniac Mansion, etc), but they later added full support for keyboard. Use, Pick up, Put, Eat, etc all had keyboard shortcuts.

I played as an alchemist when I had the game, and I basically raped everything within 100 feet of me with one click. I should have tried the hardest difficulty.

I'd probably play this game and the Diablo series if I could use my keyboard.
I know I've said it before: I'm with wyrdy on pure mouse controls. I can't stand it!

That's EXACTLY right, and that's exactly how I feel about mouse controls, wyrd.

Heh.
When keyboard controls were adding onto the LucasArts games, I found that I couldn't use them and NEEDED the joystick to move around. XD
Now if there's one series I cannot stand with a gamepad is Command & Conquer. I tried the Red Alert 3 demo for the PS3 and it just felt wrong. You NEED keyboard and mouse for those games, dammit. >:E

Yeah, RTS games with a controller are just stupid. I'm the same with Diablo type games, which play more like a single-character RTS than an Action RPG. I was jamming on Tears To Tiara tonight, which only has mouse controls too. I don' t know how you would play that with a controller.

I remember playing Starcraft 64. It wasn't bad really, but I did much prefer the mouse in that case.
I think it's not so much the input method itself but the by-product of the input method. Especially in a game like diablo, you'll either end up with your character walking into stupid, or clicking way too much to make sure you step in the right location, one step/click at a time.
