That you even have the tri-wing screwdriver for such a job is a pretty nice start. Last time I took apart a GBA SP, it was to try and clean off a dust problem that occurred between the screen cover and the LCD screen. During the process, I managed to damage to LCD screen (good one), and it is very noticeable when it lights up. Oh well... Luckily it was on a AGS-001 model, not the AGS-101 (good model) I haz 2 others ^^;

I thought the synth was dependent on the sound fonts provided by the games as well?

No clue, but if that was the case, I'd steal me some Golden Sun and Yggdra Union soundfonts and run home with them.
