I've toyed with the idea of doing this before, but now I've upgraded to a Windows 7 laptop I really have to if I want my older games to run. The problem is I keep getting an error during the install - "CDR101: Not ready reading drive D" The only options are - Abort, Retry, Fail. Of course non of these do anything useful Has anyone else used a VM? I really don't want to split my gaming between two different laptops when it looks like I should be able to sort this out.

I'm using a mounted ISO on VirtualBox (MS Virtual PC doesn't work on Windows 7 64bit, and they only give you a version that does if you upgrade to Ultimate). I guess the problem is I've got no way of testing the integrity of this ISO as I've got nothing to compare it to - so it might be me, it might be the VM or it might be the ISO itself casuing the problem *cries*

I managed to get XP running under a VM...only to then realise things I would find incredibly useful like Direct X aren't supported so the number of games I could play didn't increase by a fat lot. I did have a look at dual booting but it seems more of a risk than it's worth (especially as software-related failure isn't covered by the warranty) so I'm just keeping my little XP netbook and I'll run any W7 incompatible games off that.

It's only a risk if you don't follow all of the steps properly. Trust me, I know how savvy you are with computer crap, you'll be able to install a Dual Booting machine no problem. That said, if you do manage to fudge something up, recovering and installing a clean Windows 7 is pretty easy to do.
Hell, I would almost suggest checking local sale ads for a cheap old computer to install Win 98 on native.
