The FFXIV updater, at least for the Beta version, is actually a (pretty lousy) BitTorrent client. If you can find the .torrent files (somewhere under My Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version), you might be better off using another BitTorrent client to download them.
I'm trying out the beta version, though I'm still trying to update it. Most of the people on the other message board I post to are playing on Figaro, though if people here agree on a server I might play with you folks instead.

Lindblum is the "official" server of both 4chan and NeoGAF so you can probably cross that out.
As someone who came from FFXI a long time ago, it feels pretty much exactly the same, and that's not a good thing.

I wish I'd known that before I chose a server (and I also wish Rabanastre had been up from the beginning, would have gone with that instead)! There are a lot of PC-related problems that they should have fixed - software mouse, very poor hardware optimisation, lack of keyboard shortcuts - but I think it has distanced itself a fair bit from FFXI. If nothing else just being able to walk more than two steps out of any starting city and not have all the wildlife beat me to a Taru pulp is a good start. I'm interested to see how this player-based economy works out; it's good that there is a genuine emphasis on crafting but I wonder if people are willing to spend the time to do it.

If you are still updating the game you are better off downloading the files themselves from a site like Megaupload. You can find mirrors and instructions in FF 14 Core forums I would post a link but I'm on my phone typing this and it would be a pain. So far I've been enjoying the game maybe because I loved FF11 the game has it flaws and is not perfect. If you like FF and don't mind the weird button layouts then you'll be fine. If you want hand holding and being told how to do everything from the start then avoid this like the plague.

It's not about "hand holding" at all, there's nothing unreasonable in expecting shops to be properly marked on the map or for the game to keep track of materials used in item synthesis.

I managed to make it in -- I'm Lenalia Lausanne on Figaro. (The character name was picked more out of "it sounds pretty" than anything else. :p) If anyone else plays on the same server, feel free to chat me up while I'm playing.
I have my problems with the game (the unusually clumsy UI being the most obvious one), and while I plan to keep playing until the end of Open Beta, I don't think I'll be picking up the actual game. As tempting as the lure of "other people I know are playing!" is, I've been burnt by that before, and I don't want to pay for it unless it's at least as enjoyable as a good non-MMO would be on its own -- and I have to admit that I'm not a really big fan of the genre, and wish we saw more regular RPGs with online co-op (like Diablo II) instead.

"It's not about "hand holding" at all, there's nothing unreasonable in expecting shops to be properly marked on the map or for the game to keep track of materials used in item synthesis. The shopping districts are actually marked on the map they are an orange spot. My only true concern is the lack of an AH it's almost impossible to find new gear right now, shops don't sell them and most of the "retainers" in the Market Wards only have materials for crafting. Anyone else going to play on Rabanastre?

I actually made my main in Rabanastre, haha. After having a bad experience on Lindblum, I've been trying to find another server to use. If you see anyone running around with the surname Arliett, it's me.

Clunky interface with Numpad controls (at least they put in WASD as a default too this time...) Pathetic mouse control, more tab key for targetting Write your own macros...again No documentation included whatsoever with the game's files
At least in FFXI I could have fun throwing money at enemies because I was a rich bastard.

It's the tab'ing that gets to me - why on Earth doesn't the game autotarget whatever's attacking you? Why do I have to TABTABTABTAB through a million other players and monsters ont eh other side of the field to get to the damn critter that's biting my ankles?

I recommend playing with a gamepad. It's way better than keyboard and mouse since the game was developed with gamepad in mind. And if I se Arliett I'll make sure to say hi and even invite you to a LS if you want my IGN is Aidir Rosenbell if you see me around.
