MotS' gameplay is more like Books I & II's than Dawn of Ys'.

Got it. Sorry. Looking back on it, I guess that whole 'acting like a bitch' comment wasn't necessary.

Well, it's obviously just my opinion since video games are a subjective matter. I believe I mentioned it before, but I generally don't put "IMO" at the end of every statement in an obviously subjective argument because, well, it's obvious. I figured Peytral was in the same boat since he said DoY is "obviously superior" without specifically clarifying it was his opinion too. But yeah, whatever the case, I don't mean to pass my opinion off as fact. Anyway... I might play it in the future if I get a lot more free time (so maybe once I'm no longer a student, which will be many years). As of now, I don't consider non-canon games to be worth playing (unless they offer something truly amazing) because it feels like I'm getting emotionally invested in a big lie that I'll just have to disregard afterwards. This is actually how I see it, and I guess you don't understand that. But I also don't understand how you can hate Metroid Prime simply for being first person (and using the Metroid name I guess), so there you go.

Seriously, Peytral? Everyone has their own opinion, and I personally agree with HJ on this one. Mask of the Sun is a great game. The story and setting are perfect, I prefer the emphasis on Eldeel overall. Dawn of Ys is a great game too, but it just feels like... well, fan service, a fan game, it isn't canon and that much was made quite obvious just looking at it. There are a LOT of things I like more between both games, but I'll gladly take the one that 'feels' more like Ys I & II over the one that takes so many liberties with Falcom's script and just tries to do its own thing, even if it's done well. A good fan game still does not measure up to a good "official" game. Granted neither one was really touched by Falcom, and like I said, they both have something good to offer.

Yeah, like I said, sorry. I'm just tired of him constantly reminding us of how much non-canon games suck. It's like they're the spawn of Satan or something, when, really, they're all just games. The way I see it, it shouldn't matter whether or not a game is canon, as long as it's good. D:

To be fair, do you think I enjoy the fact that several people bring up how superior and amazing Dawn of Ys is every time someone mentions Mask of the Sun? If people are allowed to reiterate their opinion on the game so often then I should be too.

Yes, but people thinking Dawn of Ys is superior to Mask of the Sun is from people who are-
You know what? Never mind. If we start arguing again, it'll just turn into something else Wyrd has to break up.
Instead, let's make fun of Regal for making this thread and misspelling 'Ys' in the title?

Okay everyone, I think it's time for everyone to take a deep breath. Everyone calm now? Good, because you're all wrong. A New Theory is the best version of IV.
* Experience the longest version of Ys IV yet... thanks to Taito's innovative use of backtracking, slow pacing and the insertion of lead weights into Adol's shoes! * Thrill to the amazing dugeons consisting of one texture looped endlessly with lots of invisible barriers! * Bosses so challenging you can fight them with your eyes closed and you might lose up to a quarter of your life before you kill them! * Midi-quality arrangements of most of your favorite tunes! * Magic that's even more pointless than it was in V! * A final area that really wants to be Liberl Ark when it grows up but just can't manage it! * The most awesome Ys female ever reduced to a crybaby!
Yes, truly A New Theory is the game we should all be talking about.

SUPER MEGA EDIT: Actually, you know what? It's 8:30am, I haven't slept yet, I don't really care about this and I don't want to make up to some post I have to respond to. I think I have a pretty informed opinion on the game and think the "play before you judge" argument is bogus in this case for several reasons, but you clearly don't, which is fine. Let's just leave it at that.

Fine. *Not to mention that they removed one of the best boss themes in the game!
I love The Heat in the Blaze, but A Great Ordeal takes the highest spot in my heart.

Oh, it's not The Heat in the Blaze that they removed. It's A Great Ordeal.
At least, I didn't see it on the OST. D:

That scene is what convinced me to play Dawn of Ys.

Someone called winterfuryita2 has what seems to be a complete playthrough up, which is what I watched. I watched most of the bosses and some of the dungeon vids too.
Also, you need to understand that I'm not saying the game looks bad, in fact it looks pretty fun. But do I think it looks better than Ys I & II? Nope, I don't. The bosses especially look less fun.
That scene is nice, but it's non-canon so I can't really enjoy it. After all, it doesn't actually exist.

Since I'm already on a roll, I should go ahead and say I don't find the soundtrack particularly impressive either. There are probably 2-4 tracks that really impress me, the rest are just "good music". That's not particularly impressive by Ys standards.

See, and that's what I agree with wyrd on; the eight-direction movement is a great addition, as well as quite a few factors. Heck, I might even be willing to say it's a good game to play post-eternal, but I played it after Ys Books I & II, Ys III, and Mask of the Sun; so to be fair, I guess you could almost say that I've been wearing "retro-goggles". Even still, I'm upset with their story focus, Eldeel, and just about everything else. Gades and the rest of the gang are nifty, they had a LOT of potential as villains, but they're still flat in both games -- in my opinion. The way I saw it, Eldeel was the central focus, as was the hero of legend (was his name Levant or something? ...it's been a long time...). To suddenly shift the entire story around as Hudson did, just felt entirely out of place for me. I liked a lot, but I disliked a lot. It's hard to really weigh the two games, in my case, because they both have so much to offer.
