He's the boss that always takes me the longest, causes me the most frustration, and that's just on normal.
I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best. I actually want to keep trying to get better till I can believe I stand a chance on inferno.
Currently playing through on PSP. Doing 1-5 damage each hit. Am I under leveled, or is there a sword down in the lava pits that I missed, or do i really have to hit him that many times? I beat him before on the PC, but my save is in limbo at the moment, and I want to know if I should try fighting him on my commute home again, or if I need to grind.

There is a sword in the lava zone before you get the wind bracelet. Do you have that one? When you first hit the area with ankle-height lava, head north, and it's in a treasure box after a couple of extra deep lava pools you need to jump over

Guilen sucks to fight regardless. Definitely one of my least favorite battles in OiF, if not my least favorite.

I used to dislike it, but I walked all over it when I did my Nightmare/Inferno runs of the PSP version. Gyalva, on the other hand, was a major pain.

Guilen and Gyalva are two of the worst bosses in the game, I swear.

The problem with Guilern is that he has a lot of health. Yeah, he's quick, there are lava pits... but let's be honest, that's not the problem. He has so much health, eventually you'll make a mistake and groan and stand in a lava pit.
He's a boss I would love to have superboost against.
The sword however did practically double my non 1 damage, which made him a lot more dooable.
Beat the game over the weekend, and went through Time Trial on very easy for fun to calm down? Got 15 minutes, 38 seconds or so. Very relaxing, calming... A nice way to relax. It was amazing to fight chester 2 like he was a normal enemy.
Now on to hard mode, so I can then go through nightmare, and...
yeah, Gyalva on inferno... its bad as I think, isn't it...?

IMO Gyalva on PSP is easier than PC for some reason. I dunno if it's luck, but it seems like it's less often I get stuck in a corner with the entire main platform as spikes. EDIT: oh, no it's probably because I use a different button layout on PSP as well so I can charge magic while attacking. That way when I guess the bouncing tiles correctly, I can unload a nice sword combo into a charged whirlwind. The damage makes a lot of difference than just sword attacks or just a whirlwind.
Rhyanna, your view of Guilern being an endurance fight is pretty much how I look at it too. I usually gauge the entire fight by looking at his life versus mine in a 10:1 ratio. Like if he's down to 1350 and I'm sitting at 150, I'm in the lead. Then I manage the entire fight trying to maintain that life lead

The psp version seems easier in general, but I also think it's in a large part because I'm using the stick and before I was using a logitech controller that was like a PSone non-dualshock. The only issue I have with the psp are that it's shoulder buttons hurt after awhile of keeping charged wind magic around.
It was a great version though. I sort of prefer the way Galbalan seemed in the Deuce's original PC. I don't want to get spoilery, but yeah.
That and some pronunciations. Elena isn't the way I've said it, so its going to be funny when I get to letsplaying it and I keel saying El-ay-nuh, and they say El-en-uh. Mind you, that's splitting hairs, and a personal thing - by no means am I saying it's wrong or anything.
Either way, I loved the voice acting, sans a few moments here or there.
Dogi's last line to Margo... I just about died laughing.

I play the PC Ys games with a dual shock 2 controller running through a converter, but it is a lot easier to hit the 8 cardinal directions on the PSP. That helps me a lot. You should see how often I miss Galbalan with fireballs on PC.
And I liked Galbalan a bit more in the Deuce's translation as well. He wasn't as.. talkative and it was a little more imposing. On the other hand, he was outright chatty in the SNES version of Ys III
I thought the same thing about the pronunciations. I've always gone with the Japanese phonetic so I pronounce Elena the same way. And I'm okay with most of the voice actors 'cept Margo & Ligaty.. and turns out they're the same person!

I have since upgraded to the exact same controller - but haven't done a lot of Felghana since. At least not PC. I got my PSP as a christmas present from a dear friend, and have loved it to death. Makes me wish I'd gotten one ages ago.
The PSP is better for the cardinals though, that is true... my WORST playthrough, which was my first, involved a netbook and my pre-dual-shock.
My hands would rest on either side of the trackpad to keep it steady, and I'd play like that. My fingers would occasionally touch the trackpad, and I didn't notice except when Adol would jerk around. This lead to very nasty moments against Dularn 2. Very, very nasty moments.
Also, I almost killed istersiva amazingly first try... till my pinky bumped the darn hold button x.x

And I liked Galbalan a bit more in the Deuce's translation as well. He wasn't as.. talkative and it was a little more imposing. On the other hand, he was outright chatty in the SNES version of Ys III was that voice ever annoying and unthreatening! "I am Alpha! And the Omega!" I don't think I liked the pitch of the voice. I believe if they had a deeper tone like Keith David (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0202966/), it would have been PHENOMENAL! I had to listen to his speech like 3 times because I fought and realized I didn't level up enough... then beat him, and PSP crashed during credit scroll...

I don't hate it, but Galbalan's voice wasn't what I was expecting. It just sounded like a normal guy talking.. I was expecting some voice filters and a lot more HAM. All the memorable RPG villains are ham incarnate.. Ghaleon, Zophar, Dracula, Albedo, Kefka.. okay Kefka didn't talk in his game, but when he did in Dissidia, it was wondrous!

Galbalan was decently hammy. Not the embodiment of ham, but hammier than a lot of villains.

I didn't like Galbalan's voice for the most part. I was expecting a more imposing, low rumbling in the voice rather (see Darm and Dalles in Ys Books I-II) instead of a loudmouth with a generous injection of ham and cheese. Garland's and Dularn's voices were much, much better.
Still, I have to give credit where it's due. Perfect delivery:
"Mweheheheh! Hahahaha! Taste my pain! PARTAKE OF MY SUFFERING!!"
(Off-topic: I prefer the "Galvaran" spelling. It feels less Engrishy and sounds kinda badass. Maybe it's just me.)
Edit: Oh, crap... Keith David would have been PERFECT!

Galbalan sounds better to me, pronounced Gal-buh-lahn. Galbalan sounds weird and less imposing.
Dularn's vocie only has one flaw - anyone who watched Earth Final Conflict or has heard much voice-modification knows Dularn is female. Very Taelon like modification. While I don't mind this detail, it was more shocking to me the revelation of Dularn without knowing anything about what could be underneath those wraps. I do love Dularn's vocal queues.
Also a not fun thing similar to Guilern - being a moron in hard mode, forgetting where the first ruby is, and fighting Elfalle without being able to charge. Yay 3-12 damage! Yeesh does she get an upgrade going from normal to hard... to think I was going to try nightmare. Eep. I look forward to that challenge, but still frightening.
Keith David is an awesome voice actor. His low, rumbling, RAAAAAAAAAGH voice would have been perfect.
But I bet his fee would have been ridiculous.

One thousand years ago Superstition and the Eldeen ruled It was a time of darkness It was a world of fear It was the age of Galbalan
Cruel by day, destructive by night I was sealed by the humans I had sworn to terrify Frozen under an island by a magic sword and four holy statues for a thousand years
Now, here in Genos Island The spell is broken And I live again!
We are the alpha and omega We are Galbalan!!!
. . . Roughly . . .
