Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but what is the difference? (aside from the system, obviously)
I read on Wikipedia that Chronicles is based off Complete, yet I know there was a (bad) PC port of Chronicles, which would be utterly redundant if there wasn't some kind of improvement or alteration.

Thank you, O Mighty Threadromancer!
Guess that extra PC port WAS utterly redundant.
And it sounds like Complete is the way to go!

Actually, there's more to it.
- Chronicles got a "Bestiary List" of sorts for Ys I, and that was not in COMPLETE (it was there only for Ys II before);
- That HG101 article is mistaken too when it says Chronicles featured the original Ys ETERNAL music: it did not: It features COMPLETE's WAV soundtrack instead. (COMPLETE offered a WAV and SC-88 versions of its soundtrack. It's been ages since I last played, but I wonder if COMPLETE also offered a 3rd version of its soundtrack...) Ys ETERNAL soundtrack =/= Ys I COMPLETE soundtrack. Ys II ETERNAL soundtrack = Ys II COMPLETE soundtrack;
- At least the PSP version of Ys I & II Chronicles had slowed-down framerate;
- ... It doesn't have much to do with Raison's question, but just to "correct" the HG101 article author: Ys DS and Ys II DS were released together in the US in a single DS cartridge: it was only in Japan they were sold separately;
- I heard stories about an eastern egg from Ys II ETERNAL (and therefore... probably in Ys II COMPLETE, as well) in which after meeting some requirements, Adol can sleep in Lilia's, Maria's and Zalem's beds. XD I tried checking that one out on the PSP and PS2 ports, but it seems they were removed (assuming they existed, that is).
That's all I can think of from the top of my head. I think I didn't forget anything...

I can confirm that the bed sleeping thing is still in the PSP version. It should be just as the site MP83 linked to describes, except the steps listed should be treated as individual requirements for each bed, and not as one multi-part event.
As for differences between Complete and Chronicles, all I have to add is that minor bugs were effectively fixed, but mostly for Ys II (the warp bugs, mainly). Oh, and the PSP version makes you get the Bestiary Potion/monster stats each playthrough, something you didn't have to do in Complete.

Weird, I'm sure I followed those steps and still couldn't... I'll have to retry sometime. XD EDIT: Oh, I think I just recalled another difference. - In COMPLETE, there's a command or so which allows you to type a message, then when you press a certain key or so, Adol will say what you typed. It's funny.

To be fair, I haven't explicitly tested the requirements, but I do know I could enter Lilia's bed for most of my playthrough. However, one thing that gave me a little trouble at first is that you need to push against the side of the bed for a few seconds before it prompts you to hop in.
One more difference that comes to mind is the lack of inventory cycling (not referring to accessories and magic). If I'm remembering correctly (yeah, right =p), there should be two unused buttons in Ys I, and one unused button in Ys II, so it didn't necessarily need to be removed (well, it was never present in Ys I, but still).

Thanks guys. I was leaning toward Complete anyway, and if I'm not missing any major new content, it sounds like the far superior choice, anyway. I'd greatly prefer playing on my TV than a little screen (I'd have to borrow), and I'm guessing the Complete translation is more professionally done.
Adendum: Does anybody have an experience playing it on Win7 though? I've read about color problems. I downloaded the win7fix in another thread, but it says "use at your own risk" in the text. . . so I'm a bit worried it'll hurt more than it'll help.

Just a word of warning on complete: The Soundtrack is terrible. The composition of the tunes is good but the synth they used was head splittingly bad. I'd recommend finding Nightwolve's alternate OST. He re-encoded the perfect collection and TG-16 music to work with complete.
Also I didn't mind XSEED's translation of Chronicles. Doesn't the person who did it post here?

To be fair, I find COMPLETE's soundtrack to be truly excellent. It's true it's not among my personal favourite renditions of the Ys I & II soundtracks, but in my humble opinion they are still awesome stuff of GREAT quality. Probably not Chronicles or Ys Book I & II-quality, but certainly good stuff. I think most forum members here also loved it to bits, more than me. About XSEED's translation: Yep, Wyrdwad is among their translators as far as I'm aware, and I've heard their translations ARE good, but some people (myself included) prefer it when the localized script doesn't needlessly stray away from the original script, semantically, even if just occasionally. E.g.: To insert random references to other things, and to modify lines so that they sound funny or imply something the original script didn't etc.. That's why some prefer Ys I-II COMPLETE's fan-translation (or even Ys DS/Ys II DS, which had also a VERY accurrate translation, surprisingly, despite those versions not being as liked). To summarize: It depends on the player (to decide which one he/she prefers).

I'm sorry. I should have stated that better. I did sound presumptuous. It's only really two songs in Ys II that made me download the alternate tracks. The Moat of Burnedbless and Solomon Shrine pre-Zava. The former sounded like a conflagration of noise to me, like there wasn't much of a discernible tune. The latter was a good memorable melody but the synth for the notes was WAAAAYYY too loud and grating and considering how much time you spend in there it went past my breaking point quick. In regards to translation: I don't mind if some of the extraneous text is changed a little as long as the important plot points aren't changed. IMHO of course. Again sorry for my tone.

Personally, I don't mind the text straying somewhat fromt the source material. I actually agree with what Wad used to say, (something along the lines of) "translate the meaning, not the words." My problem is that it turns out that's not what he meant. Filling a game with pop culture references and silly (niche) jokes where originally there was a serious game doesn't sit well a Raison. If I want Chris Farley jokes I'll watch a Chris Farley movie. . . not play one of my favorite series which was crafted to ESCAPE pop culture. One of the reasons I don't care much for NIS games is because they're too silly and childish. But I'm pretty sure they translated into silly and childish FROM silly and childish. . . not on a localizer's whim. Basically, as others have put it best: "LOL meme insert I so FUNEE" As for the music. . . I am now completely torn as to how to play the game, when I do. You people have made my brain explode with all the suggestions. You have no idea how hard it is to type with my eyes stuck to the wall. . . Better go clean that up.

People make way too big a deal out of the references that are in Ys Seven and Chronicles. Especially in the latter.

I'm just curious where the Chris Farley jokes are in any of XSEED's translations? I've played three of their games. Ys 7, Ys Chronicles, and LUNAR Silver Star harmony. (I've got TiTS on order) I'm guessing that like the references I got, they are done in a way that if your not familiar with the source material, they are just funny lines.
For example one of the maids in Ys 7 said "DIE DUST YOU DON'T BELONG IN THIS WORLD" This is obviously a reference to SOTN. But if i had never played SOTN it would have been a funny off beat line that totally fits with the mood of the game. To me these are the best kind of references.
I've never watched any SNL or any of Farley's movies so maybe I'm not getting the references.
As for LUNAR the difference between XSEED and Working Designs is like night and day. Most of WD's jokes were old the second they were written let alone the sometimes seven or eight month wait for the game to hit stores. The famous Bill Clinton joke in Lunar 2 on the Sega CD anyone.

Humor is subjective. But to add fuel to the fire I present the following lines: From Chronicles Roo-kie the Roo: Tiddles go bye bye Wtf does that even mean? Apparently I don't get the reference and if you don't get the reference the line isn't funny and doesn't make any sense. In fact it could even be perceived as misleading the player because they could think it's actually game-related and then be confused as they try to find this "Tiddles" character Some guy in a bed somewhere: The Pikkards.... Got to... double down.. Well bully for you if you weren't an ALoY members when the Pikkard Double Down joke was made. To everyone else it's another wtf misleading line. There's some secret about the Pikkards?! Do tell! ...so unless the dev room from Eternal was reinstated...
I haven't ragged on Chronicle's localization because I haven't played that much of it (only nearly finished Ys I before PSP2i came out) and I could care less about how f'ed up the text is because I have a proper translation already in the form of Ys I & II Complete. I only bought Chronicles to complete the box art and support XSEED.

Maybe it's how i play video games but i don't talk to absolutely everyone after each event so i might be missing the stuff they are putting in the margins. As far as main story dialogue goes it reads well and it's entertaining. That's all i can really judge a translation on because i don't speak Japanese. If i did I'd be playing the original version. As far as I&II complete and Felghana for that matter, I thought Deuce rewrote parts of the script to sound more natural in English. He didn't add anything but he re-arranged or re-imagined some dialogue to read better in English. It wasn't a strait word for word translation. I guess i should summarize my thoughts: I don't mind subtle pop cultural references as long as it doesn't interfere with the story or replace any plot relevant dialogue. That said, I'm not a fan of the full Working Designs treatment either. I like a script that is close to the Japanese but still edited enough to be fun to read to a native English speaker with no knowledge of Japanese.

Picture a KFC Double Down only with Pikkards instead of friend chicken. It'd prolly be a lot tastier, too, thanks to fresh ingredients
