I was at EB today, & one of the girls that worked that, heard a rumor, that Sony's next update will make the emotion chip(one of the reasons I got the PS3) emotionless. So that I can't use hardware emu for PS1/2 games. It sounds wierd, & I doubt it, but, has anyone heard this?

I wouldn't take what she said as fact unless you find something of it on the net. All I've heard similar to that is that there's going to be a new SKU that takes out PS2 backward compatibility completely (the ee as well as any emulation for it). They said that they'll continue making future updates as well for those who do have BC for PS2 games in their PS3s. I'm not too sure which regions are getting those SKUs, though...

Yeah, she doesn't have a PS3, but she doesn't think it's true, & neither do I. But, I figured I'd ask around anyways, just incase.

It's probably true. It sounds like a smart move, as they probably want the same level of backwards compatibility with all the models (to avoid getting phone calls saying "why can my friend's PS3 play that but mine cannot, is it broken?, etc". Besides, they're phasing out backwards compatibility altogether. They have stopped producing systems with support for it (even emulation-wise) and when they're all sold out, backwards compatibility is gone forever (except possibly in the 80 GB version, I'm not sure).

That is what I meant. But they have stopped producing 60GB models and the new 40 GB models do not have any support for PS1/PS2 games whatsoever. These models will soon be the only ones on the market.
"The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).
The existing Starter Pack*, comprising a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility, an additional SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles will be reduced in price to €499. Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3."

All this nonsense makes a good reason to never junk your PS2. Even the PS2 has some issues with PS1 games so its good to keep your PS1 also.

I still use my PS1 for PS1 game(s). I'd like to say games, but honestly, the only PS1 game I find worth playing is Symphony of the Night. I wouldn't use a PS3 for PS2 games anyway, because it cannot play imported games nor burned ones.

This is very bad news for me, did this update already came up? Because last time I updated my PS3 was in June 2007, I better re-update it as soon as possible before this "bad" update comes out, no?
Is the newest update for the PS3 as of right now, still good for PS2 and PS1 games?

Yeah, I'm guessing this update isn't true, but, only rumor, & that's it.
