.....well Zava's not all evil evidently- she likes coffee! XD I freely admit that the Thor side of nordic mythology isn't my strong point. I concentrated more on Loki and smacking anyone who insisted he was a god.

Loki is half giant, son of Farbuti and Laufey (via rape) and blood brother of Odin. That's good enough to be an Aesir; given that Skadi was a full-blooded Giant and became an Aesir by marriage.
I love me some Norse Mythology; got about half a dozen books on it in reach =(
And I didn't have to look any of that up =((

*L* Yeah- but he's not an actual god-descendant as alot of more kiddified versions try to state. That's where my objections come into play. That's a slightly different path to getting it- hence my objections to simply lumping Loki in as an offical god. Plenty to be said for being willing to love a subject that much. -- *LMAO* more -and more serious- poetry to come, I promise mjmmx. Just not tonight- my limerick ability is feeling taxed after BSing all that. Besides- I don't want to share the fate of Sir Robin's minstrel.

Well, the trick that is that Laufey's descent is unknown. If Loki is half-giant by blood, then she may well be from the same stock as Buri, Bor, and their descendants. (Given we also have no idea whose stock Odin's mother, Bestla, comes from). Should Half-Giant be more metaphorical in relation of his blood-bond with Odin, though, then he could be a full-blooded giant.
I don't see that as a reason to deny him divinity, he was given at least some acknowledgement and regard; especially in his incarnation as Lopt. Asatru also regards him as a proper deity, and from what I have seen, they are on top of their archeology and eddas.

Hm..I'd have to go digging into my books which are in another room and I'm entirely too lazy to go looking for them I admit..but drawing on what I can recall: he was usually called a companion of the gods rather than directly a god by nordic tradition as many of the restrictions of the nordic pantheon that Odin and his Aesir belonged to did not apply to Loki. Cited incidents on that would be immunity to the loss of the apples, freely changing form and gender....
But I suppose it honestly boils down almost entirely to perception and how you're taught/come into contact with the mythology.

In truth, My logic is that if the Freyr, Freyja, Ullr and Njord could be called Aesir, when they came from the Vanir, and if Skadi could be, when she was a full-blooded Frost Giant, then Loki has more than earned his place. Essentially, being a god was a shaky thing. Especially since Norse gods were fairly mortal compared to other traditions.
Also: Odin freely shape-shifted as well. He just never turned female; Loki only did it to save his arse with the whole incident with the rebuilding of Asgard's wall. (SEE HOW NIMBLY I AVOID REFERENCES TO NAMES I FORGOT!).

Creative? I was thinking "insane" might be the more apt term. Six of one, half dozen of the other, I suppose.

*L* you have a point in that, I have to concede. I'm admittedly not as well read up on the mass mythology as you. Resources I trust are a little hard to find here. I've read some legends beyond the rebuilding of the wall where Loki turned female however- and Odin gave him some grief over it. I'd have to dig the book up to get a direct saga reference. And I give that avoidance a 10 of 10. Cuz I can't recall the names either and that saves me from looking even more ignorant in term! er...pretend I didn't say the latter. -- Want the full poem in a single post, Mjmmx?

If I recall properly, and maybe I don't, the reference Odin made was during Loki's Flyting. Or, for the rest of ye, when Loki finally got fed up with the Aesir and started insulting them all during a feast. I want to say that was one of Odin's replies. I may be incorrect, I don't recall the insults at all, save for accusing Freyja and Freyr of incest (which may or may not have been a Vanir custom! =D)
Also, I admit, much of what I know comes from Snorri Sturlson's Edda's. I hardly known the more Swedish and (especially) Danish myths in comparison. I also imagine the Finlanders about may have fun adding their own two cents as well.

Hehe- It's been awhile since I read that particular part of the Saga in any form but those gods had it coming I swear. -Both Loki's insults and the allegations of incest. *heh* In any version of the sagas you can't deny that both were well earned. -_-; I think that might be where our mutual mythology wires are crossing. I can't offhand recall which version I was taught offhand or where my resources led me to. I used to try to keep it separate but most of them would never properly note where they got their material or would mishmash it horridly. And I freely admit this is one set of lore where I can't easily discern when they pull that stunt.

*Tosses the lute in the air, catches it with a spin and bows deeply to all* it is a bard's duty to entertain and fill the empty hours of the night- or something dramatic and serious like that. Gotta say this is the most fun I've had being welcomed anywhere! Thank you~ ^_^ Strange and quick and alotta fun. Hope it keeps up anywhere and everywhere! heeh...actually, Mjmmx? ^_^; I'm no where near Arizona. I am, sadly, stuck in lonely exile in southern GA. I just torment Lumi and Pravi long distance and looking for more victims people to torment talk to when it's quiet while learning more about Ys. And thank you! ^.^ *ego~ Loves when people love her work* silly doggeral though it was. XD Much fun!
