....which begs the question... What I'm about to say probably belongs in the "therapeutic thread," but this misuse is one of my pet peeves. Don't mind me, I'm not trying to be mean or derail the thread (even though I'm not sure it has a clear topic anymore, anyway). Just a heads up is all. I know many smart people who have no clue that this usage of the phrase is wrong. FYI: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begging_the_question

I wonder how long the modern usage has been around? I've heard it used as long as I can recall.
Given: I rather like the modern usage, as it uses the phrase literally, and not in the bastard Latin sense that the original meaning holds to, and thus seems to fit nicely as a synonymous phrase. But once again, I've known the modern usage all my life.
ERGO: You gotta get yours, and I gotta get mine.

It is true that I took four years of Latin and won awards on the National Latin Exam, earning me the title of "Dorkus Maximus." You get that joke, and you know how to use ergo. Ergo,...something. Drat, I lost sight of my point. Mea culpa.

Actually, I don't REALLY know how to use Ergo: So I just use it in place of "In conclusion" sometimes, because it sounds spiffy. I may or may not be correct in that!
So what's a mea culpa? Does it taste good?
I may have to steal your Latin knowledges in the future, though.

I think if everyone stopped using their bastardized words and phrases, we'd lose roughly half our modern language. So I shall beg the question until the very end of time!

You've entered a realm of discussion I know nothing about, Mjmmx. I was never much for game shows back then. Still aren't, really. If I want to see people making fools of themselves, I'll play one of my MMOs.

Silly Cyh! You don't need MMOs to see fools in action! Any largescale forum will reveal them in all their glory.

Hm..when I think gameshow, I generally think of stuff like 'deal or no deal' and such. *L* I've never heard of that one. Ah, but that requires lots of reading, Captain! On an MMO, I can watch them get their whole party wiped out in grand style and not have to read gobs of text.
