Dunno how many of you keep track of more or less current technology news, but ASUS has been putting out these tiny laptops for a while. eeepc.asus.com/global/I can understand their appeal but for us folks that do PC gaming and enjoy bigass monitors and screen resolutions, I just think this is sort of a cash grab only. Even if I use a computer solely for browsing Websites and e-mail, I wouldn't use something so microscopic. I mean, a 7 inch monitor? I don't need to squint, thank you.I don't need a shit-ton of horizontal scrolling, thank you. Well, I suppose EEEs are great for children. :P

I'd love one because it would be handy to have full PC functionality wherever I go. I have my PDA, but even though it's brilliant there are still a lot of restrictions in comparison to the real thing.

Heh. I might end up with one myself all because it's cute. >_> It'd be a fun little thing to bring to PAX for on-the-spot blogging, actually. Plus, if there's a carelessly non-locked wireless Internet connection around here I can mooch off of, I can bring it to work and surf all the crap I want. But I dunno what range the wireless network card would have and i doubt any companies nearby would be stupid NOT to password protect their networks.
A quick check on Google shows that there aren't any wifi hotspots nearby either. :/

Well, I agree with nunuu. I play my PC games on a bigass monitor.
Same reason why I don't play handheld console games.

Same reason why I don't play handheld console games. But ... they're portable! :O I play my DS and PSP in bed all the time! And in the waiting room at the doctor's office and stuff!

I've tried the EEE 701 (the weakest model) in a few stores. It's very underwhelming. The keyboard's too small, so it is a REAL challenge to type on it. You have to hold your fingers straight and slightly tap the buttons. And of course, this only works when the computer's tied to the table, like it is in the stores. Holding the computer while doing it? That would be impossible. Also, the EEE 701 acually has a 8,9" form factor, but a 7" monitor, so it has these huge empty spaces on the lid, which looks cheap and ugly. It's also very slow, I tried watching some Youtube videos and the frame rate was very low. Very visually unappealing. The hard drive is only 4 GiB, so you can't fit a whole lot on there. Asus is not the only one with these kinds of computers though. MSI, Dell, Fujitsu Siemens, HP and many others have models available, or upcoming right now. MSI's Wind is the most beautiful laptop I have ever seen, but I wouldn't want to have one. Another thing about the Asus EEE, it has a very plasticy feeling to it. Feels like a cheap asian bootleg of something.

Yeah, I think by the end of this year, we'll see a flood of these little buggers on the market.
Also, small keyboards == reason to learn to type with one or two fingers! XD

You all realize the Asus EEE was based off the OLPC, which designed to be a very cheap and durable laptop that was to be distributed to third world countries? Which is why it's not really made for anything high-end. It's main function is interconnectivity. I find it kinda amusing that the newer versions are more or less eliminating many of the features that drew people to it to begin with, like the tinyness and flash memory and such.
Personally, I could do with one of these. It wouldn't be my main unit by any stretch of the imagination, but I could do with a good durable laptop for writing purposes, and sliding in a few roguelikes on the side perhaps.

Writing purposes? Have you tried one? Once you have, you'll change your mind on that, I'm sure of it. I could barely write on it, and I have pretty small hands!

I figured a portable keyboard may deal with that, meself.
Be a damn shame if you couldn't hook one up, though.

Same reason why I don't play handheld console games. But ... they're portable! :O I play my DS and PSP in bed all the time! And in the waiting room at the doctor's office and stuff! I'm kinda the exception. Everyone around me loves playing portable games. I'd rather listen to my ipod when I'm traveling around. Anyway, I'm more of a computer desktop enthusiast. I like to build up my own rig with all the bling and stuff. So ready-made gadgets like laptops or pdas don't really appeal to me.

Oh that would be possible, it has usb ports, but it seems a little bulky to carry around a small laptop and a loose keyboard. Wouldn't it be much easier to just get a real laptop instead?
I don't really play portable games either. I find that there's no good way to hold these systems, it gets painful in the arms or neck for me after a short time. I also can't concentrate on a game if I'm not in a comfortable place (i e: home). I usually don't have anything with me when I travel or take a walk, but sometimes I have an mp3 player. Although I like to get away from all the modern stuff when I leave home.

Being arthritic, I can feel you on handhelds sometimes being painful to hold. Generally you just gotta find ways to make yourself comfortable, but from what I can gather via my own experiences, as long as you're sitting, you should probably be fine with it.
As for the ASUS vs a real laptop, well, my logic is that the ASUS is supposed to be made to take a beating, which is a factor decidedly missing in other cheap laptops, as I've learned from experience. =|
Ruggedness is important for me, because accidents happen and they are fucking expensive. Personally I want a laptop that's got Oldschool Gameboy level of durability. From what I've learned, and I may well be wrong, you are smarter than me on such matters, the ASUS comes pretty close for the money. And as a wannabe writer, being able to write when the inspiration strikes is nice, especially given how tiny and easy to carry the thing is. And I double a good collapsible keyboard would be much more weight.

If you remember, I have an Asus EEE 901. And I'm still irked about the shrunken keys and demented placement of the right shift key. Yeah, so I'm a complete dork and now looking to get a larger netbook, specifically one that DOES NOT have a nerfed right shift key. This little list seems sort of useful~! Looking through it, I now know that I shouldn't touch the Lenovo, HP (for its slowness), the EEE, and the MSI. The problem is that leaves me with Acer and Samsung, the latter which is import-only at this point in time. I have reservations about Acer since I always believed them to be cheap. XD But they seem to know what they're doing with their netbooks??? The LG X110 seems okei~ I don't really care about the lack of upgrading options. And the 6-cell version's already out now anyway so the complaint about the wimpy mileage from a 3-cell is not an issue. Buh, I gotta sell my EEE after getting a new one. Shipping costs should be fun. X_X

I have an EEE. The medium-tiny one with the 60gig SSD. It's pretty sleek, works well- once I ditched the Linux for a Windows XP install- and is perfect for foruming, emails, short bouts of writing, etc.
You can also play ROMs on it. Doubly so if you've got a USB controller. Like I do. 'Coz I'm pro.

Personally, I find the EEE PC's keyboard crappy, and don't yet believe in current level Solid State Drives. So I got an Aspire One! And I loveses it. The keyboard is awesome. It fits in my backpack (i used to carry it easily - but I'm on two crutches right now so I can't carry much of anything...) and I get to call it the Netbook of Ys! Honestly, six cell battery model can get six hours! Less with music and good settings playing Origin, but hey . . .

The SSD is pretty much my favorite thing about it, honestly. It's fast enough for my needs.
