oath: While I'm generally relatively OK with piracy (as I think it does more good than harm), I've gotta say, that's a REALLY lame reason to do it. With import games as cheap and readily available online as domestic games ( Play-Asia's got you covered!), there is absolutely no reason NOT to import. Saying "I don't like to, so I pirate" is kind of ridiculous, when importing is no different than buying from Amazon or eBay. Not being able to read Japanese is kind of a lame excuse as well. It's essentially saying, "I can't read all the text, so I shouldn't have to pay for the game!" I'm not trying to rag on you... but it's one thing to say, "I pirate because it's easy and it lets me try out games that I'm hesitant to buy", and another altogether to say, "I pirate because I don't like to import and don't want to pay for games that aren't in my language." You see what I'm saying? -Tom We are rationalizing something that is illegal, so there aren't any lame excuses. However I think not wanting to pay for a game you can't read is as legitmate excuse as any. When it comes to rpgs there is a very good chance that I'm going to get stuck, and it's probably going to happen very early. There is no way I'm going to pay full price for a game where I can't even get out of the first town. Obviously it's a bit different for other genres. Most Shmups, or fight games are mostly English outside of voiced dialogue.

I really don't care about the legality of it. I buy cd's I really like to have fisical copies of it, with all the art work and because it sounds better. Ys games are the same - I buy them because the packagings are so cool. It's kind of a fetishist stuff.

I do less pirating, with the exception of rare/obscure games -- I pirate until I find and purchase them. This includes Melty Blood, Tsukihime, and other Type Moon titles.
// On the other hand, I REFUSE to buy box sets of TV shows -- what's the point of BUYING something that you'd otherwise watch on your TV for free anyway? If you can get it on your TV for free, why can't you get it on your PC for free? That is a load of BULLSHIT.

I like pirating to preserve some odd titles and some other classics that I dont really want spend 200+ mollas on.. like one of my all time favs.. Castlevania SoTN. But thats for old games that arent being made anymore, if there is a game I like thats new and recent I will most likely buy it, because I like the manual illustrations and stuff. But yea, TV series box sets are just lame.. I think. I mean most actors get paid massive amounts anyways for "pretending" to be something their not anyways -_-, an if I like the series Ill pirate it to death ^_^

That reminds me, I also like to pirate just for the sake of preserving my collection. I want to keep my games organized, in their protective sleeves, in boxes, etc. at all times, safe from dust damage, safe from smoke, safe from weather, etc.. I don't even take out or use my old systems anymore. I pirate the same games I buy and own. I mean, who's to say they won't get ruined if I took them out? D: I'd be devastated if anything happened to my collection! I did take out my SNES to play Popful Mail and Ys V, however.

I agree with that entirely. Ys V was just BEAUTIFUL on my SNES. When I can't use an actual system while playing fan translations, I move to the next best thing: my PSP. (For "Mother 3", almost as good as using my NES-style GBA SP)

I buy box-sets of TV shows that I like, for two reasons: (A) to help support the people who made them, and (B) so I can lend them out to others and convince them they're worth watching. Which is EXACTLY the reasons why my fiancee and I buy many of them. We've grown quite a collection of TV shows over the years because we enjoy rewatching them and seeing all of the extras that many of them come with. Also, I have a habit of loaning them out to friends that I really want to see the show. I'm currently loaning out Lost, Carnavale and Firefly for that very reason. Of course we may download shows and stream them on our moddifed Xbox occasionally, but we enjoy getting several box sets. With that being said however, one thing that has been less favorable with us as of late is all of the cheaper, slimmer repackaging. Many of our TV shows are the older versions with larger cases that we paid good money for back in the day, only to find that now you can get a better version for half the price. This is exactly why we'll probably avoid purchasing TV shows that have many seasons and wait for the entire series boxsets to go on sale at Amazon. : ) Going to wait until that Battlestar Galactica and Lost Series Box Sets become available. I do agree with Unsavory though in that if I'm interested in playing a hard to get game, I'll usually burn a backup copy to play rather than risk hurting the original. But that is actually a legal action if you own the original disc. -Thomas

(For "Mother 3", almost as good as using my NES-style GBA SP) Its actually Ys V for the SNES that really made me fall in luv with the whole Ys series, next to Ys 3, Ys V was the only other Ys I had played and I really saw the improvement and musical score and just really went gaga for more Ys. I didnt really like the whole Ys 4 thing tho 0_0

Actually, the legalities of that are iffy. Nintendo themselves make it a point that you cannot and should not under any circumstances, possess or use an illegal copy -- even if you already bought or own the game in question. // I agree. I love Ys V very much. I wish the Expert version weren't so difficult to get my hands on, because I love the neat extras -- extra "dungeon", "boss rush", more complex enemies, etc., very awesome stuff! I'm not sure how I feel about Ys IV. If there were an official Falcom release, I'd be happy. The soundtrack is awesome though!

Nintendo themselves make it a point that you cannot and should not under any circumstances, possess or use an illegal copy -- even if you already bought or own the game in question. Really!? Nintendo actually says something like that? Wow.... See, I don't understand that mentality, especially if you do in fact own the game can prove that you still own the game. It's up to the consumer to protect the merchandise they've purchased by any choice they deem appropriate, just so long as it does not benefit anyone else other than the owner of said game. I mean if your Nintendo game gets scratched up, is Nintendo going to send you a replacement disc? I think not! I like Nintendo as a company. but that's a pretty black and white statement from Nintendo in my honest opinion. -Thomas

I obviously agree; otherwise, I wouldn't be hacking Faxanadu, nevermind running the ROM when I own a working cartridge and console. (;

D: I'd be devastated if anything happened to my collection! I agree. My copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga is never going to see the inside of a Saturn again. I only ever take it out long enough to copy it to my harddrive. Yeah but in Nintendos case, they are still making money off a lot of those games through the Wii's virtual console. It's kinda funny, you can go to any Rom site, which has almost every game for every system, but they no longer offer Metroid or Zelda. So they know about rom sites, but no one even tries to shut them down any more. Also I'm pretty sure thing about making a backup copy of software you own is a myth.

Like FM-77 wisely once said: "Can't stop piracy, sell piracy." xD I didn't know they considered it illegal to have an unoriginal copy of something that you already have in original form. *sigh* It's probably because if your original breaks, they want you to buy it again. They do that kind of stuff with nearly every product nowadays, like TVs, DVD players, even video games... it's capitalism in the extreme. xD

Yeah, that's the idea - buy, break it, then buy it again! I felt like shit when I scratched my Ys VI in my DVD drive and I really don't want it to happen again. And I sure won't buy it again, as much as I love Falcom. Also, when video and audio tapes came out, back in the day, all the companies where crying out that recording was pirating, so you see, that's just the way they are.

Meh, its tricky, but it does more good than harm anyway.
Would you like to buy something, then realize you can't stand it or it just outright doesn't work (like my felghana <_<) and uninstall it after 10 minutes?
Would you REALLY support people like EA with their shitty games and built in rootkits that do more harm to people who bought the original games than pirates?
If for example i feel like replaying Baldur's Gate II, buying it is not going to help the makers, since Black Isle doesn't exist anymore anyway, i will just give underserved money to publishers.
But then again, i'm all into supporting small companies with great ideas, or ones that make REALLY good games.
There's a difference, some games are meant to be played, and other games are meant to be sold, and i'm not going to support these.
