Yarr! Just a topic about piracy in general, and how it helps or hinders any kind of development. Software/music piracy, of course. I'm an admitted pirate. I download pretty much anything before I buy it. ((Unless it's a Ys or Breath of Fire title, or if it's accessible. )) On the other side of the spectrum, I buy a lot of games, although mostly on a digital platform. I know some of you out there are pirates, if so, what do you pirate? Music? Games? And why do you do it? For me, it's more to test titles. I'm extremely picky with my games, I mostly play -just- RPGs with little exception. And then I play jRPGs. So I don't wanna drop 30-60 dollars on a new title unless I know it's gonna be good. For music? I rarely listen to "new" music. I have over 50 gigabytes of video game music though. Video? Don't get me started on that. I own very few DVDs. Prices for DVDs (Especially anime) is steep, you can throw me in jail for it. (I have a copy of Vampire Hunter D, Bloodlust, Ys Legacy, and some Studio Ghibli stuff. 's about it.)

I spend pretty much all the money I can afford to on DVDs and games and stuff, and then I pirate whatever games are left when my wallet is sucked dry, provided they're not on the PS3, in which case I just weep.
I pretty much always pirate music, though. No real reason I suppose, it's just the easiest to pirate. Small files and very easy to find.

I (had) an impressive Wii library, and everything on my Wii (Excepting injected WADs) is legit. Sorry, but I'm a proud Club Nintendo member. Platinum all the way! However, my PSP? It's so pirated I won't even go there. I own my copy of Ys 7 and OiF. 's about it.

I've never felt bad about pirating music. I do make it a point to only pirate the "popular" artists, you know, the ones that end up on TV 'cause they did drugs or got a DUI. They sure need that gold-plated Keytar, you know.
Games? The newer titles I usually buy, with Steam and a good content system for my Wii (VC, the most recent game I've bought disk-wise was Boom Blox Bash Party) I just don't have a reason to pirate.
PSP-wise, I will never feel bad about pirating on that console. Especially titles by Squeenix or one of the "big" publishers. Smaller publishers (XSEED, Nippon Ichi, etc) I more often than not buy the titles to keep the publisher afloat.
And movies? I'm sure I'm going to hell for downloading the japanese-release of the Trigun movie. ;p
All in all, the ones that say "PIRACY IS BAD", I have just a liiitle question for you. Do you use emulators? ;o
(( I don't use most emulators anymore, now that I have my Wii. I've bought well over 50 VC and WiiWare titles, so I have an impressive library. My Wii is modded however, and it -does- have roms on it of the harder-to-get games like Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, and the like. I also have an injected wad of Super Mario All-Stars + World and Earthbound, both titles I've owned. Boo-hoo. ))

For the record, since I get the feeling I may have been taken seriously: Ashurei is an extremely facetious beast. Also an atheist, so you can ignore the 'sinner' remark, too!
However, no, I do no emulate. The only exception to this is Dawn of Ys, where I own the game, but not the console, so I emulate it. I guess I pirated MagicEngine? But I'll be damned if I'm gonna shell out that kind of money to play one game. Fuck that shit. Ys is meant to be played on the PC anyways.

I take everything seriously, due to my AS.
And I recommend it, so you can play classics like Tales of Phantasia the way it was meant to be seen. (SNES or PSX. Fuck the GBA shit-port.)
That, as well as Seiken Densetsu 3 and Mother 3 make emulation worthwhile.

Ah, but Tales of Phantasia was meant to be played on the PSP, which I own and have played through entirely. Moonrunes!
Also I never got into Mana. Also no interest in Mother 3, but if I did I would import it!

I can't read or understand Japanese, unfortunately. Although I do have a PSX eboot of one of the translations on my PSP.
And Mana's a good action RPG, if you like 'em, give it a try.

Can the resident game developer of the boards tell us why games cost $40-60 at launch, only to drop drastically when they don't sell well?
(( No jabs intended, curious. ))

The price drop is to do with retailers, not developers. If something in your inventory isn't selling as well as you'd like it's better to get rid of them for $10 each and at least make some return than to have them taking up valuable warehouse space for months/years.

If something in your inventory isn't selling as well as you'd like it's better to get rid of them for $10 each and at least make some return than to have them taking up valuable warehouse space for months/years. Exactly. Well said Kimimi. If the price of the game drops early for the developer, then the developer just doesn't sell as many copies through the retailer and ends up doing with less money and the retailer tries to compensate it's losses by pushing it out the door for less. If the game really doesn't sell well, then it becomes highly unlikely that a sequel ever gets made unless the developer and publisher are confident that they can change things around for the franchise, second time's a charm. Doesn't always work, look at DJ Hero and DJ Hero 2 for example. Not bad games, but not great either and now it's outta here! Gone. No more. Piracy does hurt companies, but I'm glad to hear that you guys are at least looking out for the developers that are either, small or ones you want to see do well. At least for those developers, you are balancing out the piracy of other gamers who simply pirate anything and everything with a sale. -Thomas

I really would feel bad if I pirated -everything-.
As I stated earlier, I try to support the smaller developers as much as possible. I have considerable disdain for the "Big guys" (EA, SQE, few other places.) and although I occasionally buy titles from them, they're the most "pirated" titles I'll get.

Those "big guys" were once small fry too, so to say "Well it's OK to steal from <Company> because they're big and popular" doesn't make sense - would you steal from Falcom if they got as big as Square-Enix? Would you buy Capcom games if they were just a small Steam publisher?
Please don't mistake this as an attack against yourself or even against piracy (I doubt anyone registered here is snow white); but I don't think that buying a $5 indie title and pirating a $50 360 game makes anyone Robin Hood.
