I heard that Ys 4 was being developed for Mega Drive instead. Anyone has got interesting links regarding that? (=x) EDIT: I also heard Ys II was also planned for Sega Master System. Does anyone know if that's true?

Does Konami still own the rights to do console ports of Ys games?

I'm inclined to believe that you're right, considering Taito was releasing PS2 remakes of III, IV and V while Konami was releasing VI on PS2 and PSP.

Too bad their remakes all sucked. They should've just gone with direct ports, like they did with Zwei!!. Zwei!! on the PS2 is totally respectable, because Taito barely messed with it at all. The 3D remakes looked really nasty to me, but I coveted the PS2 Ys III for quite a while... still can't play it, but I'm getting there! Despite how good YsF is, Ys III still sticks out to me, probably because it's the first I played, and I do like the original format. Even if the remake is not so hot, I'm probably gonna dig it just for what it is. I mean, come on, I just slogged through Robbit Mon Dieu, you know I'll force myself if I like a series enough.

Adol was slow and sluggish in all the Taito remakes, proof that they just Didn't Get It. Ok, that and the horribly budget feel of the games. Still, I can find some bits of praise for the games.
Overall: They paid for voice acting when they didn't have to. Not necessarily good voice acting but still.
III: Uhh, screw it. Compared to Oath I can't find one nice thing to say about this.
IV: The expanded elemental swords/magic system was good in theory, even if the execution was horrible. The ability to see alternate versions of some event scenes if you went hunting for the right items wasn't bad either, though the fact that you had to walk all the way across the map at a snail's pace for some items didn't improve my minimal enjoyment of the game... Oh, and the several hour delay between seeing Carna get whacked by Bratos and being able to save her was just dumb.
V: Dogi actually shows up. That's about it.

FM-77 claimed the PS2 Ys III was not only the best version, but also better than OiF. I don't really think PS2 Ys III was better than Oif. But DEFINITELY PS2 Ys III is the best version of Ys III, in my opinion. Afterall, it all is just a matter of opinion. For further discussion, I suggest this should be discussed in this topic instead.

I think all 3 of Taito's Ys are.....just ok. There are things I liked, & things I hated. I think for the most part, I did enjoy this Taito's Ys 4, more then the SNES one. I haven't played thru 5 yet though, kinda want to wait until I play thru the SNES one in english.

IIRC, I believe Konami only ever bought the rights to Ys VI. The de facto console rights to Falcom games, if left unpurchased by other companies, belong to either Falcom themselves or Marvelous Entertainment. I could be totally off-base with this, though, so please correct me if I'm wrong. -Tom It just completely baffles me that Ys Oath or Ys Origins didn't get a console port in japan. What the hell is Marvelous doing? I wish Hudson would buy the rights although I don't find their games as stellar now as their Turbo Grafx days.

anybody with enough money can buy the console rights, maybe we should start a PSP port company?

I don't think PC RPGs would be profitable in the western world, since PC is dominated by Sim, RTS, Racing and FPS games. most RPG gamers have a PlayStation, since the most popular RPG game is still Final Fantasy.
Sony has recently cut down their PS3 SDK by 50%, and distribution through the PSN would make it profitable, by my idea.we just need to wait a few years until the fanbase of the PS3 has grown. aka wait till Final Fantasy

PC RPGs are plenty popular in the west. Just not console-style "JRPGs" or even action RPGs. Even if they were marketed better than the US versions of Ys VI and Gurumin, I don't think Falcom's titles would ever find more than a niche audience where they're not already established, especially on PC.
No matter how much we like Ys, a lot of the general gaming public is disgusted by even the presence of sprites, especially low-res ones, and anything that's not delivering CUTTING EDGE 1080P PRESENTATION is inferior. I've heard a number of stories about people giving up on Ys VI within an hour because they didn't understand the fact that you needed to level up to defeat certain enemies. Sigh.
There's really not much money to be made here. Breaking even probably isn't that likely either. Doesn't mean I don't want official English releases, but I understand why we don't get them. A shitty situation.

I hope you are right Wyrdwad. I don't understand much about how most of that profitable market thingy works though, don't think I have the right notions...
But hey, if it is possible, NightWolv and Deuce (and maybe you) are already a Falcom colony! xD Why not become a company? And maybe you could contract a very skilled hacker or two, not counting NW of course. With that, perhaps you could do very well! =D
Though, I can't imagine NW saying "dear Ys and Falcom fans...recently I and Deuce decided we are going to get deep with it and start our own Falcom company. We are already scheduling what will be done, and [...]". Too, TOOOOOOOOOOOOO good to be true. xDD But who knows.

Ys VII is going to move to a new 3d graphics engine. It will be the bestest game ever and divide Ys fans into two camps: Those who played I-VI and know that they are the best of Ys and the newbies who only know VII and up who refuse to play 'those old-timer games'. Sarah Toba told me so in a dream.

That sure is exciting news that Ys is moving toward a new graphics engine. We can only wait for screenshots and trailers next year.
