WyrdwadI know everyone has different opinions @unsavory Porisumanfakku When compared to other DS games, it's about the same. red Hairdo I can make a promise that this game WILL be fully translated. (I'll post screens as I go) And thanks JustinWell all DS games are like so. I mean - Chrono trigger DS that is soon coming out (almost a direct port from the snes version) will cost 40~45$ o.O And since I have replied, I just wanted to post new screens: Another testing screen to be sure if menus worked after changing the texts: Graphics hacking was done by my partner

I'm done translating all the items. I'm starting on the NPC names. Fluent japanese people (including a person that have worked with Square Enix before) are translating the texts. And I've redone the main menu to make it look more fit.

Very impressive! Forgive my ignorance, but what would I need to play these on an actual DS when they're finished? I'm well-versed in PSP custom firmware but I've pretty much ignored the DS scene.

A DS flashcard, and if you're smart and get a good one, a micro SD card. That's basically it. You won't even need to crack, patch, or flash your DS firmware.
BTW, as far as modern slot-1 flashcards go, I highly recommend the CycloDS Evolution.

Yes, you would need a flashcard. Because of legal issues, I cannot tell you where you can get them on the internet, but you can easily look up what flashcards are there by google-ing. Well, more news to come. I'm having problems with translating the script, but all database lines are easily translate-able. currently, here are the screens. the screen on the bottom shows the script that is working. Some script is just showing up blanks, so I need to find out how to fix that error. But pretty much, if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong, then the translation will go very quickly. (and don't worry, I've changed Dr. Baldo to Dr. Buldo) If anybody here knows japanese or can somehow help in translating, please do some translation on these 2 spreadsheets for us: spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pOGRUiJEHNTTs-h_D70Wtbg&hl=enspreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pOGRUiJEHNTS8r6fzPYiOMw&hl=enplease do not use google translate, because these spreadsheets are what we are using for the actual translation.

I wonder if Deuce is seeing this. I'm sure he could help "beyond imagination".
Your work is very promissing.
Some here might be able to help you, I think. Though I'm afraid I'm rather powerless to help significantly. =l

I hope any of you can help translate the spread sheet. (not by any online trans) currently, 95% of the NPC names are done (the translator is unsure for some) equipable item description translation is 100% done. Non equipable item description translation is 0% done. The script is less than 1% done. (still being worked on to find out the problem) Graphics are about 30% done. NPC scripts are 0 % done. sign post texts are 0 % done. "Extra" texts that we have found in the ROM has been translated on the spreadsheet, but not yet on the ROM itself. (I've done enough today o.O) Hope the translation gets finished quickly

95% of the NPC names are done (the translator is unsure for some) If that's the case, tell the translator to tell you which names he is unsure about so that we can find out about it using Ys I.II COMPLETE as a reference, as well using other english Ys I/ II games in the case of more important characters (such as Dogi, Luta Gemma, Claus, Fleah/ Flair, etc.).

some names might be different from the COMPLETE translation (as we are not using this translation as reference, and we do not plan to copy anything from it). So that means ALL NPC names has been done, all item descriptions have been finished, all area names have been translated (but the new area that is only found in Ys DS is called Bagyu Badetto. we don't know what else we can call it.) If anybody wants to help in script translation, spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pOGRUiJEHNTTtjIykDjuePQ&hl=enwe are getting close to a 100% database translation (the text that is in the bottom screen is not translated yet, and testing needs to be done) but we are close to getting into the script translation. Please contribute to the project if you have any knowledge of japanese

Kick ass, now I am super excited for this project. I should pick up one of those flash cards if it means I can play this in English on my DS.

(but the new area that is only found in Ys DS is called Bagyu Badetto. we don't know what else we can call it.) That sounds about right. It's called "Bague Badet" in the Master System version. By the way. DS flash cartridges are not illegal in the slightest. Posting links to where to get them is completely fine. The best ones on the market (99-100% compatibility) are M3 DS Simply / R4DS (they are the same card, just different names). They can be had for about 30 dollars.

Actually, the R4 is pretty obsolete and janky by today's standards. It kind of reinvented the DS flashcart scene a year or two back, but has been completely eclipsed by more modern cards.
I highly recommend the CycloDS Evolution. It's not as cheap as the R4, but has a metric ton of new features, is still heavily supported by Team Cyclops, and has a bunch of features that older cards such as the R4 lack. And probably won't get, since R4 support has largely disappeared.

even though I don't support the use of flashcarts (even though I have one myself ) I recommend the Edge. It's a clone of the CycloDS evo without the extra features, but it is one of the cheapest types you can get, with the great compatibility of the cyclo. The best flashcart out there is the cycloDS evo, though. the R4 and M3 simply is outdated, and they are not updating their firmware as much. and I have now started on the script (a nice romhacker has built me a great tool ) The intro is fully done.

As a proud pirate, I encourage the use of flash cartridges as much as possible.
I don't really trust the Cyclo products, because at least they used to be shoddy and inferior clones of other products. Maybe they've gotten better though. I don't really care about the scene anymore.
Also, how can a fully functional cartridge be outdated? Every new game works with it. And what other features than playing games are necessary?

Because every new game does NOT work on the R4. And since they barely update their firmware these, if at all, support and compatibility will decline. Also, the R4's game compatibility was never as high as that of the CycloDS.
And the R4 is NOT fully featured, as it lacks plenty of innovations brought about by teams such as Team Cyclops. Real-Time-Saves? Built-in cheats (including in-game disabling)? In-game text reader (carry your FAQs with you)? Battery Saver mode? Innate GBA loader? Plenty more where that came from. I realize that SOME of those can be added via homebrew, but the native support built up by Team Cyclops largely trumps other implementation. And some features are, for now, still CycloDS exclusive.
And yes, the initial back of CycloDS Evolution cards were not up to snuff. But they're on their 2nd and 3rd revisions are of excellent quality.

Real-Time-Saves? Like a emulator save state kind of thing? So you can actually fill it up with DS and GBA games? Can you rip your own games (although I'm sure it's pretty easy to find the Roms online)?
I'm sold! Guess I'll wait to buy Ys I & II DS for awhile.
Sorry to turn this into a DS Flash cart thread...
Translations looking great Psycoblaster, sorry I can't be any help translating it.
