I am now at this lava place but nearly at the end I think. This is not the first boss it is the second flying dragon on this kind of bridge. I can't beat him. I am now at lv 18 and nothing helps. I searched arround the internet and final I found a video at youtube and this guy has something I do not have I think. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSpBh_jaT58Not the first enemy in this video I mean the second one. Everytime he is taking somekind of potion or magic shield o n and the enemy can't hurt him in that time and when it is gone he is using it again. With this I am sure I could beat this enemy too but without it I can't see no hope for me. SO what is he using in this video and where can I get it?? Vf~

Yeah, Gyalva gave me quite a bit of trouble when I first played this game. If you need an Emerald, and don't know where to find one, I believe there is one in a chest in a vertical platforming section just before where you fought the first boss of this area. It should be near the bottom of the area.
As for the boss himself, I tend to shift between being in the center of the bridge or off to either edge when he's in the background. If he starts to "charge", or looks like he's going to throw some fireballs to flip the bridge, then I dash off to one of the edges to avoid it, and go back to the center to see what he's up to. If he happens to be at the very edge, then make a break for the other edge, because then he'll likely overturn the whole bridge briefly. When he's in the foreground, I've found that the edges are usually a safe place to be.
Hope that helps you!

I've noticed the bosses in the game are extremely hard, I kind of like it as a challenge but some times its quite down right outrageous. I could just remember the time were I have the boss close to 1 HP and I die right there. The best advice I could give you just like the others is to find hidden treasure, level up, or Teleport out of dungeon back to town to buy or upgrade equipment, cause the rest of the game requires skills. Its good to have a hard game, builds skill, it'll grow on you!

Heh, nightmare mode will put hair on your chest. X) Seriously, you should've seen my fight with the boss of Elderm. Fights in Nightmare and Inferno absolutely have to be nothing short of EPIC!

Hmm, I think I misused the terms "background" and "foreground" when describing tactics for Gyalva, so I modified my earlier post slightly. To clarify, "background" refers to where the boss is at the start of the fight, to the north of the view given of the bridge, and "foreground" refers to the area south of the view given of the bridge. Thought I'd point that out in case it confuses anyone else who reads this thread looking for possible tactics to use against Gyalva. Heh, nightmare mode will put hair on your chest. X) Seriously, you should've seen my fight with the boss of Elderm. Fights in Nightmare and Inferno absolutely have to be nothing short of EPIC! I'll probably play Nightmare mode sometime in the near future, and I am not looking forward to fighting the main boss of the Elderm Mountains. Although, if the falling portion (my biggest problem in that fight) is anything like that of the Normal and Hard modes, I may have found a way to escape it unscathed.

What made it worse, SOMEONE(SISTER) poured syrup all over my controller thus making the buttons stick and making the reactions slower!

Ok I beat the boss.I have now a good tactic in this game.I level up as much as possible and buy some good weapons or level them up and then the boss nearly can't harm you. ^^
But now I am in the Castle with all these traps..and ..I need to say it:
I HATE THOSE JUMPING PARTS IN THIS GAME!!!!
I really can't stand it.Everytime you jump a little bit too soon you will fall all the way down and you have to run up all the way again or you jump to much and fall down...man jumping sucks.. The old Ys games were better because there was no jumping...I hate that.
The are some bosses that might piss you off a little bit but thats nothing in turn the jumping parts...thats so frustrating.
I really got headache from yelling at my adol chara...I will stop for today to play that game or I will get a heart attack...==(

Try double jumping.

Infact, charge up your wind bracelet before jumping, and use wind magic continuously in mid-air; Adol will have a LOT of air-time in doing so! Infact, you can use it to cheat in SOME areas...

Play on very easy, there's a "not-fall" option, which lets you not fall when you're actually supposed to.

Just keep practicing, and you should eventually get to where you need to be. Valestein Castle is really as hard as the platforming gets in this game, so just keep at it. If, however, you feel you really need to play on Very Easy, here's the link to the patch for it: www.falcom.com/download/support/ysf/ysf_1203_VE.zip

Actually, there is a not fall option in easy, also (that thing written in the upper right hand corner). Just hit F1. And do a wind magic before jumping, it works better than if you do it in mid air.

Have you installed the English patch? Normally it installs the 1203VE patch automatically, if you're connected to the net. You should use more wind magic, it's the best in the game, and if you keep hiting it in midair, you can float for a while. Anyway, I got through that part for you, but remember there'll be a lot more platforming in the castle. How can I send it to you?

ok, i've to say too, this boss is ridiculous, seriously -.-' i'm playing in nightmare mode, and the boss itself is not so difficult, the problem is when he rotates the tiles, sometimes he rotates ALL of them, you can go nowhere, the only thing you can do is wait, and it would be fine, just jump and avoid his attack in that little angle of the screen, but most of the time he kill me because while i'm on the my sweet little angle counting the flames that run around me, he rushes at me, and i can go NOWHERE, i like difficult boss, but i really don't like attack that cannot be avoided, and in this case i've 2 choises, one is letting he kill me, the other is suiciding me on the reversed tiles... i hate it -.-' i want a way to avoid it -.-'

Been a while since I played Felghana but on Nightmare/Inferno, the far left/right sides of the platform cannot be flipped and are key if you're unlucky and he flips all the tiles. You can still dodge all his attacks there, you just have a lot less room to work with.
Worst part is that luck plays a heavy part in the fight due to what tiles he flips.
