:D
Wild Arms Alter Code: F's version of the overworld tune from the original game. :3
Of course, the original is good too!
Final Fantasy VI (since everyone pretty much knows the tune, I figure I'd plug another version of it :P):
Final Fantasy I overworld theme from Final Fantasy Origins:
(Side note: I really adore the entire soundtrack and I love the original FC/NES version too.)
Chrono Cross - On the Beach of Dreams ~Another World~:
Suikoden II - second half of the game overworld tune:
Final Fantasy IX:
Chrono Trigger - Wind Scene:
Chrono Trigger - Corridors of Time:

I think most of my absolute favourites have already been posted. ^_^ But one that immediately comes to mind that hasn't is the underworld theme to Terranigma. Much like Wyrdwad said the Final Fantasy VII theme encapsulates everything that the game is about (I agree completely, by the way~!), I always thought this mysterious, slightly sinister piece perfectly summed up the loveliness that is Terranigma. ^_^

This is better than everything Wyrdy just posted.

AHA. I thought of one I really like. Seems only half of the Jeanne D'arc soundtrack is on the youtubes, though. This FMV has the world map music playing in the background. Not the whole thing, sadly, but it's there. It's seen within the first hour of the game, but SPOILAR ALURT if you haven't played it I guess (no huge plot points - for srs). tr.youtube.com/watch?v=U2k-oawUso8This little diddy from Breath of Fire IV, too. Whole game a pretty good soundtrack, actually.

And this is better than what I just posted. When this song comes up on Winamp, I almost immediately get all misty-eyed, it's got so many good memories attached to it. =]

Somehow, while I like Chrono Trigger's Wind Scene, at the same time I don't like it either? I don't know... it for some reason always left me feeling kind of... sad? Or something like that. There's something very lonely sounding about it. >__>' (Not Corridors of Time though! Now that is one magical-pretty sounding track!) And while the same most definitely applies to FFVII's overworld theme, I actually love, LOVE that! Nunuu's picking of the Suikoden II overworld theme (and that is another track that I really, really, really love!) though reminded me of the ocean overworld theme from the original Suikoden. Me love~ ( now how many times have I said love yet? Ehem... my great range of vocubulary for conveying my adoration for stuffs appears to be totally shot today~ :'D)And since I'm off on a Suikoden-overworld-mode, lemme stick up Tierkreis' second overworld theme too~ I'm not sure how much I love it yet, since I'm still playing the game but... when the music suddenly changed to this one, I found myself spending quite sometime simply meandering around on the world map just so that I could listen to it more and more. :'D Aaaand... FFVIII's world map theme. The first time I heard this, I had a reaction which could be summed down to 'what the bleh is this bleh?! DX' But later on, while listening to its soundtrack, and then after that replaying, its grown to be one of me most favourite tracks ever! And now I can't remember the rest. *senile*

There's something very lonely sounding about it. >__>' That's what makes it so good. It fits the mood of the area perfectly. You are supposed to feel sad, hoplessness, and despair. I was going to list that one, but I realized I don't like it as much without the context of the game. All of the music in that area does a great job on conveying the mood. Although this isn't an overworld theme, it's my favorite from that Area Chrono Trigger- People that have Abandoned the will to live.

I'm not entirely sure what kind of game 2 is, wyrd. What little I've found about it seems to indicate that it's an action rpg. I've never tried the ROM of the second game, to be honest. If it plays like the first Madara, though, it's like... a proto-FF12 battle system. Random battles happen and the screen cuts to something like the Earthbound battle interface, but then it immediately goes to this top-down enclosed area where you can issue commands to all your characters and they just kind of wander towards enemies and exchange blows with them until you issue a different command.

How about Lunar: SSSC and Lunar: EBC? Lunar: SSSC's overworld theme:
Lunar: EBC's overworld theme (first):
Lunar: EBC's overworld theme (second):
Really neat themes, IMO.

I can't believe that this hasn't been posted this yet. When I think of badass overworld themes, this one comes immediately to mind as one of the greatest.

QFT. Kikuta's soundtracks are always a pleasure to listen to. I ahve to admit, I never really got into the mana series, but the music is quite pretty. I have the OST to some game called Soukaigi by him that's ridiculously pretty as well.

Prophecy is good, but you went one too high on the tracklist.
