xD Haha, I know what you mean. I was shocked myself. XD that's why I wrote "try it for yourselves after playing the PSP port" instead of... saying the game had any feature that surpassed Chronicles'. xD Because I knew it could start confusion, which I want to avoid.
It's strange, because I got bored with the DS versions pretty quickly, but when I gave it another (reluctant) try after some months... This game, just seemed to be a lot better than what I thought of it before. (And add that to Atlus' awesome translation... @.@.)
The extra sword also made defeating Vagullion without the Silver Sword something more possible. xD
... I think I should pay the Ys DS threads a revisit.

Overall, I found these ports to be quite enjoyable. My original Ys 1/2 experience was with the PC version, so after going and trying many of the various older incarnations of the games it was almost nostalgic going back to one that so closely resembles the versions of Ys I and II that I fell in love with.
As for the music, it was sort of a mixed bag for me. I LOVE what they did with soundtrack to Ys II (Especially Palace of Salmon and Subterranean Canal), but I think the re-recordings of the Ys I music fell short of my expectations. What made the Ys II Chronicles soundtrack so good was its willingness to try all sorts of new instrumentation styles on the classic songs, and changing the tempo and styling of many tracks for the sake of breathing new life into them.
I didn't get this same sort of vibe from any of the Ys I tracks, barring Dreaming. Ys II felt fresh and different, which is what I expected from the team that handled the arrangement of the absolutely stellar Oath in Felghana soundtrack. The Ys I tracks, however, felt like simplified rock covers. Replacing all of the classic instruments with electric guitar is a bit of a cop-out, and while it worked in some places (I actually liked the new Holders of Power, for instance), it made some of my old favorite tracks (First Step Towards Wars, Palace of Destruction and ESPECIALLY Tension) feel stale.
The experience with the game overall though was a fantastic one, it's up there with Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Star Ocean: Second Evolution and Yggdra Union in my list of favorite PSP titles. I just hope the next arrangement of the Ys I soundtrack is a bit better and more varied is all.

Hmm... You know, only now I realized something odd. When you get to level 55 in Ys II (I thought the maximum was 50, my mistake), your maximum HP and MP strangely go up by one and they both end as 256 instead of 255. ... It wasn't like that in Ys II ETERNAL, Ys II DS and and Ys II COMPLETE, was it? ' Probably not, but I would just like to reconfirm... At least I know the PS2 version wasn't. xD By the way, something else was censored in this version, just like in the PS2 version (and probably DS'): clickxD lol

Hm... I see. Thanks for letting me know. Just how... odd. ' Especially because in the PS2 version your maximum HP still is 255. While the other two attributes go absurdly high. XD

Apologize for the big *not that big* bump
I just ordered Chronicles from Falcom and the wait is starting to get me anxious. This is my chance to show my friends this series.
Anyway to my question, I already know that the Ys II plot in the game is different from the OVA, but is the plot for Ys I that appeared in the OVA similar to the plot in the game?
*Clarified post and fixed errors*

I do realize complete has a patch. I was just curious since I could not finish complete due to a buggy copy I got from a 3rd party. Im also on a budget so it was either complete or chronicles, I got hooked on chronicles for the fact its on the psp *plus my Ys VI on the PSP is getting lonely* and the collectors side of me wanted it if the hopes of it getting localized is slim. We never know. I can understand enough to get me through. Eventually gonna get complete after Ys Seven. Almost everyday like Falcom more.

I still would have liked it if Falcom would have release this for the PS2 or something. We have no idea if Ys 7 will ever make it to a home console so it would have been nice to have an official, unbuggy version of Ys I&II (I'm looking at you Ys I&II Eternal Story) on a home console. I'm also surprised they never port OiF to the PS2 or even the PSP...

Don't let Red Hairdo hear you talking about Eternal Story like that.

xD I have nothing to add. xD Really. Anyone interested can just check up here and here as to why labeling that game as "buggy" is unfitting, among many other things. Anyway, nah, I don't reeeally think that Ys SEVEN needs a home console version... it's goddamn fine in the PSP, in my opinion. And if the PSP version of Ys VI was as good as PS2's, for example, I would have favored the PSP version as well. As for Ys I-II COMPLETE, to me, it is far from being the best version of Ys I and/or II, even when excluding Ys I·II ETERNAL STORY. *recalls Falcom Classics/Ys Book I & II/Ys II Special/Ys ETERNAL/etc.* Even when taking into consideration only the console versions of Ys I and/or II for comparison.

By the way, Ys ETERNAL, Ys II ETERNAL and all of their posterior incarnations (such as Ys I-II COMPLETE) are SERIOUSLY buggy, technically. xD Also, Ys I & II Chronicles PSP wouldn't even bring the same experience, Wyrd, especially due the low framerate and slowdowns. Anyway, for liquidpolicenaut's case, I think it's just better to run Ys I-II COMPLETE and play with a GamePad. Edit: Whoops, forgot to include this page as well in my first post.

We do have an official, unbuggy version of Ys I & II on a home console. Ys I & II Chronicles, on the PSP. Considering that I pretty much ONLY EVER play my PSP via TV-out, it basically IS a home console for me. So as far as I'm concerned, Ys I & II Chronicles on PSP is just as good as having Ys I & II Chronicles on PS2. -Tom See, thats stretching a bit I, too, enjoy my PSP but having it hooked up to withe rof my TVs just yields too small of a video window. I try and zoom the pic but, alas, its still small... In regards to Ys PS2, in those earlier threads I also stated I do indeed own that version and think its a good version...just Digicube rushed the port in my opinion. The little screen jumps that occur, the load times, the extremely unnecessarily large save file...and the audio gets screwed up on my US PS2 with Swap MAgic (I kid on the last one. Its not a REAL fault...but it is for me!) just show it was rushed. Im sure if Falcom personally did it, it would have been perfect for all intents and purposes... In regards to the games themselves, I guess I come from the opposite of you guys in that I am not a PC gamer at all except for MAME and the Ys games. I just prefer console gaming and would love to see Falcom try to make a game specifically for a home system like the PS3, 360 or even a PSN, XBox Live or WiiWare downloadable game and see what they come up with... After thinking about all of it though, I guess its true that a home console version isnt really needed for all the previous versions of Ys now. Funny how Red Hairdo should say it, but I actually DO enjoy my Ys I&II Complete and OiF hooked up to my TV and play via gamepad so I guess kinda just talked myself out of my previous post! lol

Ys I·II ETERNAL STORY doesn't have low framerate (constant 60 fps, it has) nor slowdowns. As far as running goes, it's perfect. And actually, you can see more of the surroundings in that version than in the ETERNALs or COMPLETE and the like (which is something I forgot to mention in the previous debate).
(Also, Chronicles's load times are practically the same too, which is of 3 seconds in general, except when the game is first saved. Screen jumps didn't occur to me, as well. However, all that and much more has already been previously brought up and discussed here, so no need to redo it.)

Hm, okay, so I got my copy of the OST today, and while I the new arrangements are generally good, some of them don't really sit too well with me. Palace and Dreaming are both really beautiful songs now (they were before too, but now they're better), and my guilty pleasure, Ice Ridge of Noltoa (sp?) certainly got better too.
But... what happened to Termination? I much prefer the Perfect Collection version of that song. I might even prefer the Complete/Eternal version to this version.

The one I was most disappointed with was actually Tower of the Shadow of Death, since that's my favorite Ys song (probably, I'm not really sure, but it's definitely up there). I just think it's lost some of the special ambiance it had in the previous versions. Though the Ys Origins version has spoiled me for life.

But overall, the Chronicles soundtracks are really neat. I think the biggest jump in listen-ability in tracks was the moat of burnbless. In every other version of the song, I find it somewhere between annoying and passable but in Ys Chronicles I actually like it. A lot. I'm not quite sure how they pulled that off.

The soundtrack just came up in my Winamp and you know, upon hearing it again, I must say that I really like it. *_*;
It even makes Moat of Burnedbless not so annoying to listen to!
May even have to shell out some money to purchase the OST although I really would prefer a (legit) music download service instead.
If the soundtrack is on iTunes, I may go out of my way to get a JP iTunes gift card then.
Well, I see Music from Ys I & II Chronicles on there but dammit, if my Internet wasn't so pokey right now, I'd be able to check the rest of discography!
Goddamn Christmas shoppers taking up bandwidth!
