I think I'm done supporting Xseed after The Last Story. They said they are going to do DD only games from now on. So long Xseed. Won't be getting my money. Shame as I loved them. Yes even if this means no more Ys for me. I just won't do DLC.
As a collector I hold true to my belief against DLC. I was going to buy Wots4 as well but not anymore. I suppose Ys will be DD only from now on. Which means I might sadly have to be done with newer Ys releases.

I'm in the same boat. Guess all the big companies are in such high demand now for big budget titles and all this DLC crap which basically gives smaller companies (who make real games) hard to survive.
I've sold my PS3 as I've got so bored of this gen. It's all focused on graphics, online play and DLC. Back to rebuilding my old collection as that seems to be where gaming is.

I once hated the idea of digital downloads but I have since embraced it. I really don't care to own physical media about 90% of the time anymore. The other 10% is when the game is just really special to me.
Hasn't every generation been about graphics. I mean if you really think about it. I remember arguments between friends about graphics for verious systems as far back as I can remember. Which would be NES Vs Genesis then Genesis Vs SNES. so on and so forth. The companys have always touted there systems as having superior graphics, with few exceptions. Online play came in last generation and dlc is new to this one. DLC isn't always bad and its optional. And online play is also optional.
Though I do feel like the best gaming was in the 16 bit era.

Games are about playing games. Sure I prefer having something physical because there is a sense of permanence about it, but if I have a choice of digital or nothing at all, then I'll take digital.
Plus going digital helps a small company like XSEED go after the amount of games that they do. If it wasn't for digital, I'd have no hope of playing TitS SC or 3rd because the PSP is dead.. but thanks to Steam the dream is still alive. Unfortunately that doesn't help with Zero & Ao, but hopefully we'll get the Vita re-releases at this rate.
Honestly the concept of physically publishing games was broken (once again, despite how I prefer physical copies). Think how many NES/SNES games we missed because Nintendo only gave vendors limited shelf space.. or how many PS2 games we missed because Sony favored 3D games instead of sprites in the US.. or just the general costs of printing games, especially for small niche markets when printings are usually done in bulk.

There's been a lot of discussion on XSEED's forums about this recently too... I like owning physical copies of things myself, but for smaller companies, it can cost a lot more than it can benefit, I guess, so I understand why it's ending up like this. If it were free to manufacture physical goods (which is obviously beyond the impossible in our present) I'm sure everyone still would, but of course it's also an issue with retailers and how they pick and choose what to stock...

Only digital games? I really hope Ys IV will physical, like(I think)the rest of us. I just want the game with it box and instructions, like always. I don´t see the sense to buying just the data. Just like I don´t find the sense to the e-books, I prefer to touch the book. =/

I'd hate it if Ys IV or any other Ys game (not counting Steam releases) was digital only.
// He did say the majority, so I'm thinking that big name titles (in terms of US sales), and possibly Ys, might be the minority.

Thanks for the explanation -- and I hope you didn't take my response as a guilt-trip. I know I would be just as disappointed as you would be, but I also know that you can only do so much, and I appreciate your effort.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Tom and MP83 on this one. As a collector, I love owning original copies of games, especially English releases in physical format and this has been my stance for a very long time: Being fervently against the idea of digital downloads, and mainly because I used to see it as a temporary ownership of something digital that would last only as long as the service itself lasts.
But, overtime, my view of this has changed a lot because the industry is changing in this direction. I mean if you look around now so much is already heading in this digital direction. We have WiiWare, XBL Arcade, PSN, Steam and new services for digital distribution and new hardware outfitted more and more for running digital distributed games. RPGs especially have become harder and harder to bring to America as well. Most that do come over here now are compared to the newer age RPGs such as Mass Effect and Fall Out 3, rated poorly on mainstream game review sites and classified as "JRPGS". Hell, we almost didn't get Xenoblade and Nintendo from my knowledge owns Monolith Soft now...
Times are hard right now. The video game industry is a 30 billion dollar industry sure, but it changes radically every 5 years and both developers and publishers have to do whatever it takes to survive.
I'm actually surprised we've gotten so many great Falcom games (and other series) brought over so well and with so much careful thought in this day and age when most publishers are having to start really being extra careful. I mean, look at EA now, they are cutting jobs and killing their printed instruction manuals in favor of having it be digitally included on their game disc. XSEED has had the balls to do all of that and they really deserve respect for what has been done so far.
What would you rather have, a digital download of a game you want to play in English that you can play and understand with the option of getting the original in Japanese, or no English version at all?
-Thomas
Edit: Also, Tom, I had not had a chance to mention this before, but I love the idea that some of these Falcom releases are being released now on Steam. This is great news for everyone that has wanted to play these on PC. I'm really hoping for Trails to make it's way to Steam. Here's to that!
Edit 2: Oh yeah, I forgot to bring up one last point. My reason for hating digital distribution in the beginning being that it only lasted as long as the service itself lasted. Well, while this still holds true, I see this more and more as something less to be concerned with going forward about as games are starting to be associated to a personal account now rather than an actual system. Even Nintendo has started going in this direction with their Club Nintendo accounts and eShop being linked together.

Exactly! XSEED coming to Steam has been an awesome move so far, and will prove to be more awesome still! I still have yet to support XSEED's effort on Steam (so I know nothing of the achievements, etc.) but am looking forward to the opportunity. Appreciative isn't the word for it -- rather, I mean to say "Thank you".

As much as I loathe DD, I will not stop supporting Xseed, or just plain buying the games I want in general. There may be cases where I'll buy the JP version of a game, just so I have a physical copy with a manual, etc. I will say that I was going to buy the latest announced Xseed game, until I found out the PSP version wouild be DD only. However, it's probably not my type of game, I've never been a big 1st person dungeon person. Maybe I'll pick up the 3DS version if I really want it bad, though I'd prefer PSP. Ofcoarse, I still don't have a 3DS, it'll still be awhile, I'm more likely to get a Vita, but that's a different subject...

I could totally speculate, but that would ruin the fun. Plus what I'm thinking of is actually *a little too optimistic*, even for me. Yet, I cannot underestimate the skill of a team who has Falcom's full support, regardless of the exact number of programmers that your team has. Skill and quality is certainly more important than quantity.

Funny enough thanks to steam I won't support DLC. Ever again.
Once DLC takes over gaming I'm done with it. Just play the thousand upon thousands of older titles I have yet to play.

I'm perfectly okay with digital downloads. I still like physical releases, but the problem there is availability. Digital downloads are available 24/7 on a digital store and never run out of stock. I don't have to worry about making a preorder to make sure I actually get a copy. I just buy it as soon as it's up and enjoy it within a few hours. Warriors Orochi 3 was download-only for PS3 in North America due to a certain rule of Sony's, and I'm actually somewhat glad for it, because not only was I able to get it without even leaving the house, but it was $10 cheaper than retail too.
I can understand people who want physical copies, but personally, I'd rather have digital these days. Especially for PSP, since I plan on getting a Vita eventually.

We won't let you guys down with our Falcom releases, I promise! -Tom That is the best thing I've heard for some time! I hope that includes European fans too It is quite hard to show support for those last two DD title announcements since they are not even available here, or will Unchained blades get EU release in 3ds eShop? Is it even possible? I'm really curious what ll be the next Steam title after Ys Origin. More Falcom? Or something else? If it is Falcom, Ys or something else? I wonder if this DD discussion ll be a never ending topic in XSEED forums

Wyrd: you are right, but Nintendo only do that with old games, or future game makers, not with their new games.
From Wikipedia: XSEED Games (stylized as XSEED Games) is a video game publisher and distributor founded by former members of Square Enix USA. Their goal is to bring high-quality interactive entertainment to the North American market. They provide sales services for video games and related materials, as well as marketing support services mainly for Japanese corporations looking to market general consumer goods on the North American market.
So, what I want to say, is that Ys is not from XSEED, it is from Falcom. If XSEED doesn´t distribute the physical game, don´t worry, other company will do it, but Falcom and ONLY Falcom has the ultimate word to say if Ys IV will be physical or not, not XSEED.

It´s what I want to say you: XSEED it´s a publisher, but it doesn´t have the right to say any company in wich format they want their game.
For example, Nintendo and Playstation distribute SEGA´s games. But SEGA does the games for an specific format, Nintendo doesn´t tell them where to release to their platforms or formats, as well as Sony. SEGA distributes the game in the format that they did, and wanted to develop, and that´s what happens to Falcom. If they don´t want their games in Digital format, they just looking for another company who publish their games.

I... don't think you realize that I work for XSEED. And trust me, Falcom's not making any demands on us regarding release format. No developer ever has, as far as I'm aware. They COULD, sure... but they don't. It's just not a common business practice. Developers license their games to publishers, but typically let the publishers determine HOW to release them. The publishers then look at platform-holder restrictions, licensing issues with voices and such, retailer interest, etc., and determine whether or not to release the game physically from there. -Tom Then, they just the ones who tell you in wich format they want their game, aren´t they? Or that´s what I think. Nope, I didn´t now you was working for them. XD
