EVERY ONE OF US COMPLETELY AGREES WITH THE POINTS I'VE BEEN MAKING IN THIS TOPIC.............READ WHAT I WRITE, INSTEAD OF ASSUMING THAT I'M TRYING TO START AN ARGUMENT. Thank you. -Tom : The DS simply *should not* attempt 3D, in much the way the PS1 *should not* have ever attempted 3D. Both systems should've just quit while they were ahead, and only ever featured 2D games... I don't agree with you and that's why I "commented" I did read what you wrote, and if your afraid of others commenting on your opinions then don't post them.

I dunno about Justin, but I do read what you write.
When you talk about how you don't think X is going to be good or isn't good, then go on about its graphics, it pretty much looks like you're arguing that graphics are a significant factor in that.
Like I said before, it's alright. We all sometimes have our moments where we imply things we don't mean. It's cool, holmes. =]
Just learn from the experience.
Edit: Gat damn.

I could see them being that way, and in someways it would tickle my 16 bit funny bones, but I love those crappy 32 bit pixel messes. They were really bad on the Saturn, but they have a very 90's charm that I wouldn't trade in for the world. Also, I don't think it would take off here at all. Xenosaga I/II DS would be one of my top DS games had it even come out here. Changing those games to 2d would in many ways, insult the original artistic visions the creators had for the game. It would have the same name, but be a different monster.
As for Jumping Flash, yeah I suppose it would have looked a little nicer on the n64, but it would have been so close at the time, I wouldn't have noticed. There are very few multi platform games from back then that really stood out on one console, unless it was a 2d game on the Saturn.
Even though it wasn't king, the Playstation really did pull off some good 3d when it needed to, and developers were pretty creative about using and working with hardware limitations. I mean look at the improvement from FF VII to VIII/IX.
What can I say, I love the 3d and 2d.

FFVII? Hell no. XD Its prerendered backgrounds set the stage on all counts, and there were a lot of things that would've been impossible, even with mode 7 and the latest chipsets thrown in. I'm quite pleased with the way FFVII turned out, it wouldn't have been half as revolutionary, exciting (Sephiroth) or even dramatic (Aeris) as it was on the PS1.

This whole discussion is pointless. xDD
You're also being a little mean to Wyrdwad, Justin. xD
I know I'm an offtopic master of sorts, but let's talk about the "Ys I/II in western shores" episode instead, or nothing. xD Because we all agree that: - Graphics won't decide if a game's good or bad; - 16 Bits rules, 32 Bits rules, 64 Bits rules.

- 16 Bits rules, 32 Bits rules, 64 Bits rules. All graphical bits and bytes rule, dammit! But isn't 3D the in-thing right now? That might be why the industry pumps out so many 3D games regardless of how well or poor they look on the system.

Yeah, sorry, got things a little more sidetracked than usual. Ultimately, though, the point I was trying to make was that Ys I & II DS should've just been 2D in the first place. It was a bad idea for Interchannel to go the 3D route with it, and it essentially made the game look as crappy as it plays. Which I guess is fitting! -Tom I also think it would perhaps look better in 2D, but that's a matter of taste, I think. And I agree with nunuu. xD Also, for this case in particular, I think it was better for them to do 3D environment; not because I like that way more (since I don't), but rather because it would have been another Ys I-II COMPLETE port otherwise, and since we already have that, something new would be prefered. And if it turned out to be crappier that way, you still got the amazing 2D environment from Ys I-II COMPLETE. So there's no loss for any of us. xD Only gain (for those who managed to enjoy it).

I must say, I took the control scheme for the stylus off for a bit to try out the D-Pad, sword slashing form of play and I've started enjoying it more. Sure, it is short range, but apparently it seems to be less about the range and more about the timing. So it is something you can get used to, sometimes running in combo slashing for a bit, running back a bit and charging in again. The cool thing is that it offers an entirely new experience for Ys I & II, making the gameplay style more like the button-mashing gameplay of Ys III-Origin, minus IV.

I was planning on playing it that way to offer something new. Glad to hear you are liking it.

There's MS-DOS' Ys II Special. You should check it out too, it's almost my favorite Ys game of all time. (Well, it's the biggest one.)

Ys I and II DS is pretty cool, I liked it. Whenever I play it though, I feel the need to listen to Battleground and slaughter countless enemies in the new area of Ys I. I love it, for some reason.

Awesome to see some positive light on the game. I am getting a bit more pumped to jam on it, and I am hoping to write a big review on it when I am done.

I think I would actually like this version. I wish I could try it anytime soon to be sure, but I'll have to wait some time.

I'm totally enjoying this version as well, I go back n forth with stylus & dpad depending on the situation. Sure, I'd waaaaaaaaay prefer the 2D gfx of Complete, & this isn't the best version of 1 & 2, but, I still am enjoying it!

Ys II Special was pretty cool. It would be nice to see that version translated and bug-free one of these days. I wonder if there would be any Korean translators that would be interested in such a project...
There's a new area in Ys I? I was told that that Ys II had a new dungeon and new armour sets, but I didn't know there was additional content in Ys I. Would you mind spoiling me on its location? I definitely want to check it out.

Ys I secret area (spoiler tagged): Beat the shrine, and when you're ready to enter the mines -- don't. Go back to the outer area of the shrine, and head to the left. Touch the goddess statue. As far as I'm aware, there isn't any extra content for Ys II.

I just found the new area through Unsavory's post and I'm actually rather excited about what it is. Apparently it isn't optional as much as it is a new required level that adds an extra quest for the second Ys Book, rather than it just being handed it on a silver platter by Sarah's assistant. But the area itself is one that I've been asking questions about for a long time as to why we were never given an opportunity to explore it. The area has been on just about every illustration ever for Esteria in Ys I. I've always wondered about what was there, and now the question can finally be answered! : )

Already burned through Ys I using only the Stylus. Just started Ys II, had to change from Stylus to D-pad to kill the first boss; shooting fireballs with the stylus was making things too difficult.
