Just finished Ys II. I've played most of the game during my many train rides this week which might go a way to explain why I at least got some enjoyment out of it. Under all the crap they've piled upon it, it's still based on an enjoyable game.
I'll try to keep this short as most of the points have already been made several times.
- Horrendous controls Why they didn't just include an option to use the bump system with standard controls I'll never understand. The fact that it works while Adol isn't equipped with a sword is just a slap in the face as far as I'm concerned. A reminder that this could have been a fairly enjoyable way to play Ys on the road. I ended up using 'Normal" throughout most of the game. Slash + combo worked all right in Ys I since the monsters aren't all that strong and you spend the latter part of the game just running past them anyway. But in Ys II I had to resort to using firemagic more than I'd like. Stylus controls just didn't work for me.. which in effect ruined most of the boss battles, the part I usually enjoy most about Ys-games, since I HAD to use them.
- Graphics Now, sometimes they actually look all right but I found them very uneven and, in the end, totally unnecessary since the game doesn't use the added depth to anything until the end sequence of Ys II. In fact I found some areas, like the field, to look "flatter" than in the original. Also, I found some very amateur looking glitches and mistakes. Things like the top of sprites being hidden behind walls they're actually supposed to be running in front of, weird lagging issues with the scrolling in certain areas or animations from the original completely removed leaving in it's place awkward moments of waiting for nothing to happen.
- Load times and slowdown I'm especially talking about Ys II here which found it ok to divide certain areas into small chunks with load times in between them. Effectively ruining places like Noltia. Is this because of a memory issue with the DS or something? I just can't understand why this would be an issue on a cassette based system. Also the slowdown during the boss fights is just bad and ruined the few bosses I thought I would enjoy since I could just blast them with firemagic and not be forced to switch over to stylus controls.
- Music This is probably the part I'm least critical too. I thought most of the tracks were all right but the ones they slaughtered (Tension XD)... man... they pulled out all the stops to make them as unenjoyable as possible.
In the end.. I'm not sure why I picked this up. Yes, I want to support any Ys-game that makes it out of Japan but I'm not sure crappy ports are a good thing. Like many of you have said.. this might, sadly, do more damage than good.

Hey, at least you're also playing Retro Game Challenge, which IS a really good DS game. And Alundra, which I very muchly need to play at some point. -Tom You haven't played Alundra yet?!? Get on the ball man! Great game, some pretty tough puzzles at some point IIRC. I wish the 2nd game was the same. I haven't played it yet, but, I'm sure I'll enjoy it anyways, but, probably not as much as the first one.

Alundra is amazing and totally worth playing through. It's also one of the more challenging AARPGS out there. : ) It's also quite dark.

Personal reasons... those who stay tuned in the Spam thread know why. But yup, one of the best games on the PS1, no doubt. You would like it, Wyrd. It's one of those ripoffs that are better than the original game (Zelda, in this case. xD Not that Zelda is bad). Kind of like Neutopia. But hey! All that should go to another topic!

Finished both games. I played mainly with the stylus and switched to Normal so I could properly beat Velegunder the first time, and Druegar, because I wasn't that good at aiming fireballs straight. Well, that was at first; I bet Velegunder easily with the stylus in Time Attack.
Throughout both games I had the most trouble with Gelaldy and his big frickin tongue doing their little death sandwich. Kind of hated the perspective of the fight as Gelaldy's ugly head is pretty big. I was seriously disappointed at how simple Darm was to beat, although admittedly I did watch several time attack kills of him long before I played this game and I had a very good idea what I was supposed to do.
I had the game randomly freeze my DS for no apparent reason.
Overall I felt I made a good investment on this game. Most people I spoke to about this are just incredulous that I could actually like an 'inferior' game compared to version X Y or Z.

I also remember Darm being much more of an a-hole in Complete. The slow down caused by his projectiles might explain parts of it though.

I laughed my ass off when fighting Darm in the PS2 version. xD Since you can seriously overlevel Adol up to Lv.99, I beated him without even the shield magic, and I didn't take much damage either. xD Ridiculous! And I was playing on Hard! Man, I really need to pick up these two games! I searched for it yesterday to see if it was for sale, but...

The DS game is what brought me back to Ys. The only Ys I'd ever played was the SNES Wanders from Ys. Then I saw that I&II were coming out on one cartridge for the DS and jumped at preordering it. I got through Ys I really fast . . . up until the Dahm Tower. After getting locked in that cell, I couldn't figure it out. I wandered around that cell and tried everything I could think of. Finally, I gave up after an hour and pulled up a walkthrough and it said to walk around the cell and then Dogi would break in. I looked down at the DS and . . . he'd already done that. I didn't need the damn walkthrough! Haha. But then I got stuck again. I got to the door right before the boss . . . and it wouldn't open. Somehow I had never gotten the pendant or whatever from Luther. Grrrr. Then I started YsII and played about half of the game. Went to bed. Woke up, and played the other half of the game. It was awesome! I love how interconnected the two games are. But now that I've just finished them, everyone is telling me that the version with the most advanced graphics and sound are the PC versions. Grr. Keep in mind, on these boards, there may be times that we say names of characters or places in 1 & 2, that are different from the DS version(thanks to Atlus screwing up some of the names). For instance, Dahm is Darm, Gorvan is Goban, Lance is Rance, Luther is Luta, Reah is sometimes Lair(though, Reah it more accurate), Dr. Fleah Ral is Dr. Flair, Lamia is Ramia, Duless is Dalles, Labah(I think that's what they call him, the old guy in Darm Tower) is Raba(or Rava), the Dark Pearl is the Black Pearl, .....that's all I can think of at the moment, but, you get the general idea. Quie a few of them, are just a matter of replacing an "L" with an "R".

I'm fine with Luther too. =] Fine name and translation for it.
I don't have much against Dahm too... Dulless only a bit, but not much too.
Now Labah is funny, what a joke. xD Reminds me of Riobardo.

Zetik Village, probably. xD
For some reason "Zetik"/"Zeptic" makes me recall "Zorak". XD

I fail Anyway Ive just finished Legacy of Ys as well. They must've changed the difficulty between versions (JPN and US) because Legacy of Ys's Ys I IMO was easier to level up in than the JPN version. More experienced gained by monsters it seems. Oh, and is it anyway possible that Ys I and II Chronicles is just a port of Legacy of Ys?

Wow, they called him Labah? What the hell is that?! That's inconsistent with Konami's translation of Ys VI, too! And "Dark Pearl"? It's like they were TRYING to be different! Sheesh, Atlus!! -Tom To be fair, they called it both 'Dark Pearl' AND 'Black Pearl'.

In the TG16 Raba was Rasta, Keith was Keese, and the one main killer Dogi was COLLIN.
Complaining about Name Pronunciations in an Ys game is like complaining about crashing into baddies. It comes with the territory. Are there some things in LoY that I wish were different? Absolutely, but if you get over it, Atlus did a GREAT translation. No need to be nit picky. I always read aloud, and every time my DS says "Gorvan" I say "Goban" If you listened to a Japanese person say it, they'd actually sound about the same. Same with Salmon shrine. We're used to Solomon. Well, the o between the l and m is SO very subtle in nihongo. I have played Ys I & II on the Turbo, on windows (thanks Deuce and Nightwolve), NES, Master System, Dos (eeewww) and MSX (and I'll play the pc88 versions if anyone knows where I can find them. hint hint PM). And I can honestly say that there is nothing wrong with the DS versions. Best graphics? no. Best music? no. Is it Ys? HELL YEAH! Can I play it when I go on vacation? HELL YEAH! Just be greatful that Atlus didn't try to be faithful to either the Master System or Turbo games. You can't please everyone on this.
