So we all know the economy is currently sucking and companies are laying off workers everyday. Anyone else suddenly finding themselves without job? I got laid off from one job in September last year. Got a new one and in December we were told the parent company was shutting our office down. Originally it was to be closed in October this year, but now that's moved up to April. I doubt we'll even make it that long. So now I'll be jobless again and jobs in my field (graphic design) are getting harder to find. Hopefully I find something soon, I'd rather not lose my house.

Graphic Design... Perhaps you could send CVs to companies that work with Intellectual Property?

I had a job, but they fired me for not smiling enough. :[

What about talking up art commissions as a side thing too? Your doggies are absolutely adorable and I'm sure you can earn some extra from that side too! But me god....... firing you for not smiling much. What a silly reason! .....Well! Their loss! As for me being jobless - not not really. I never really have any proper 'proper' jobs to start off with. But I've noticed all this has affected the sales of me paintings. People have no money, people no want waste money on art, curators and galleries scream at I to lower prices, I scream back 'no way!'. End result - I finally accepted the job offer from my old university to fund me eccentricities (games!) and.......... I now find myself with a job?

Yakra's right, that is a bullshit reason to fire someone. Still, this is America, it does happen -- here, you're supposed to smile, even if your cat dies. :P Yakra should draw a picture of a cashier with a dead cat on his countertop, the cashier with a tear-stricken, menacing grimace -- with Feena's eyes and Adol's smile from her latest works. :3 It also has to be a dark scene. X3
// Makes me wonder when I'll be out of the job. o.o I've been quite lucky so far.

This isn't a good time to be jobless, that's for certain. =/ Depending on what area you live in, no matter what skills you have on call, you might not be able to find a thing. I've been out of work since 2007 and this area's steadily losing jobs rather than gaining them so I'm not holding my breath on miraculously landing one.
Good luck and I hope you can land another job soon, Cade & Kyoushiro. They're hard to get and keep right now with companies having their pick or going under left and right. =/

That story kind of pisses me off. >=|
It just shows us how unfair things can be. At least that person can be sure of himself; he must know how great and disciplined he is, and feel proud of himself and keep going on.
Also that kind of stuff happens less often in smaller companies. Hope he enters one and make it rise up. xD

What goes down, must come up. I am trying to keep that in mind right now. Its really sad to see so many workers unemployed.

be careful at walmart they tend to like to overwork there employees and give little benefits. Yeah, thats what all my friends told me. But to me, thats ok I just look at it as, I'm earning money so I shoudlnt complain. Yakra - Yep and he even had to manager that i wasnt " friendly" which is a total lie, yeah i'm wasnt happy but that didnt stop me from having short conversations with the customers, as long as we werent busy. I've though about commsions, but i have a huge lack of self confidence and want to imrpove befor taking some commsions. Not counting the few from my friends at school.

I made my first big mistake in the history of my work.
A customer walked off without paying for the goods. I think it was supposed to be a card transaction and for some reason or another, the computer may have declined it and I just went on my business, or perhaps I didn't push the credit/debit key hard enough/at all. It was around $20 worth of merch., so I'm pretty confident that I'm fired. My drawer was over $1.05; the transaction never went through, so the computer didn't know better. I realized the transaction didn't go through because the immediate customer after... well... "bought" the previous customer's merch.
So I called the manager and had her take care of that business (because I can't leave the front and all). I was right about her all along. She was a condescending bitch. She laughs with everyone else, but is all stoic, stern, perhaps even angry when addressing me or even my mom (when she's a customer). I don't know what the hell her problem is -- I mean, it'd make sense if she was ONLY like this *now*, but she's been like this ever since I was hired on.

If you were my employee i would be dam proud that you reported it to me right away. The computer should have a record of the transaction that failed. although it may have a record. dont know if the card was ligit to begin with though.

I doubt it. If that's how she treats me when she likes me, then I'd hate to see how she'd treat me if she was in absolute disgust, outright repulsed and offended by me.

I've done that before - customer walked away with two brand new N64 games without paying for them (back when they were £60 each!). It just goes down as missing stock and written off the system; it'd be a slap on the wrist but it's certainly not a sackable offence to make a genuine mistake. Thinking about it though I knew that many high-ups in my old job and got on with my boss so well I could have set fire to his trousers and he would have bought me a cake. What is it with American employers anyway? Everything I've heard makes it sounds as though they can sack you if you look at your boss funny - it is really that bad?

That's awful - people do their best work when they feel happy, valued and secure in their jobs; being able to get sacked for a single mistake or because your boss is having a bad day doesn't create that kind of workforce.
