I'm obviously not going to name names, but I'll say this: our company used to be really awesome, until we were bought out by a much bigger conglomerate. At first, the buyout seemed awesome: we got better benefits, more funding, we all got paid more, more people were hired, and we were basically given complete creative freedom, told that we would remain an "independent city-state", despite the new ownership. For a little while, this continued. But after a little while (about a year), it became clear that we were NOT independent, and did NOT have complete creative freedom. The big company that owns us was calling the shots... and this week, with the huge number of layoffs we suffered, this is even clearer, since we wouldn't have had to lay off a single person were we not owned by someone else (the "order" to lay off 1/4 of our workforce came from the parent company, and was non-negotiable). I think the lesson here is that if you work for a company that gets bought out by a major conglomerate... be afraid. And start looking for other work. -Tom ya just gave away the company that took over your company. It is quite famous the company that just did all those layoffs. it is all over the business station. I am sorry they took over your company... along with other companies they have taken over.

Argh, I'm not sure what the company is...
I -think- I know, but damn it, I have trouble guessing things like this.

Wyrd works for Billy Maze, and helps develop floor cleansing products for a cleaner America. The likeness is startling isn't it? I hated working for other people, and I got fired from a lot of jobs. I never took my "boss" shit and when they came down on me for crap, they always got a prompt middle finger. I like being my own boss, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Isn't that Mr. T....? Anyways... I made my first big mistake in the history of my work. A customer walked off without paying for the goods. I think it was supposed to be a card transaction and for some reason or another, the computer may have declined it and I just went on my business, or perhaps I didn't push the credit/debit key hard enough/at all. It was around $20 worth of merch., so I'm pretty confident that I'm fired. My drawer was over $1.05; the transaction never went through, so the computer didn't know better. I realized the transaction didn't go through because the immediate customer after... well... "bought" the previous customer's merch. So I called the manager and had her take care of that business (because I can't leave the front and all). I was right about her all along. She was a condescending bitch. She laughs with everyone else, but is all stoic, stern, perhaps even angry when addressing me or even my mom (when she's a customer). I don't know what the hell her problem is -- I mean, it'd make sense if she was ONLY like this *now*, but she's been like this ever since I was hired on. What a rotten lady. X( She's actually reminding me totally of this co-worker of mine from my 'freelancing' job. (Only I'm not as patient as you. I actually finally lost it and told him off into the next dimension. After we had a minor spat over.... Dark Fact, of all the things. ) But aside from that, this 'forgetting to pay/not being charged' has happened a lot of times with me - not from the cashier side, rather as the customer. :'D But when I realize, I usually run back to the shop, apologize, and pay. Perhaps that'll happen with you too?

Hey who lives in the US? Who likes statistics? If you don't live in the US, worry not! Chances are your country does this too!

Yakra: I'm curious how, exactly, you ended up in a spat over Dark Fact. Give us some details! Its hardly exciting. I was trying to show the co-worker the sort of stuff he ought to be aiming to make (by showing him the Ys I Complete opening) and the sort of (incredibly hot and not balding and fat) villains we ought to be aiming for, when he pulled his usual retardedly snippy comments like 'I do not waste my time on childish things of toddlers such as video games. I only concentrate on work!'. Then he proceeded to go off and butcher Dark Fact and.... well....

wyrdwad that is too bad on the layoffs. it is to bad to the arts wreaked by the greed of monies. maybe they will get a clue and quit trying to take over the fad game companies and focus on letting you folks do what you do best.

Google-Fu man, its all about the Google-Fu.
To keep in line with the topic, my Uncle got punted recently. He was with his job for a very long time (20+ years), and he was part of a union.

i think i'll try big Y or walmart, stocking shelves or something.. no more cashier jobs for me.. I worked for Big Y for 11 years, and they laid me off in January. Their way of saving money was laying off anyone with lots of seniority so they could hire people at starting rates. Most of the other people that I know of that were laid off had 20+ years experience. It's still not a bad company, this has left a sour taste in my mouth, and I refuse to support them anymore. I also live in Connecticut, and I've worked in a lot of the stores within the state.

If all else fails in life... I may be going for SSI/Disability. What this means, however, is that I'll never be allowed to work again, which further means denying myself the right to complete my game development project as originally wished for, and denying my international shipping business.
I'll continue to think about it, but time's running out and I need to figure something out fast. I haven't been able to hold ANY job for longer than 6 months.
I'm also just finding out that I'm dyslexic, which is why I have such a hard time with books. Is college 100% ruled out for me, or do they have services available to people such as myself?

Most colleges should have some kind of service for you, yes.
Also, a good professor should be able to cover a lot of things in lectures for most subjects, so good note-taking can get you around dyslexia. Did for me, anyways.

Not only will they have services, by law they are required to.
As a professor if a student presents documentation about a learning disability, I have to give them a lot of leeway...even when they're clearly bullshitting me about the extent of their disability(you missed the test because of Dyslexia? Really?...*grinds teeth* well ok...), otherwise I get chewed out over it.

Welcome to being jobless. I'm in the same boat right now man, and its a double edged sword for me. While I feel like a jackass for not making any money, I've only had 1 week off in the last 3 years, so this is a great way to relax. Heather (My fiancee) makes a good buck, and our expenses are low, so I'm able to take some time to myself.
I think I'm going to apply at a gamestore while I work through school.

What a funny coincidence. Heather must be an extremely common female name. Mine prefers to go by her middle name. WYRD! Wow, 6 years?! Well... on the plus side, you're thinking positively and I think that's awesome! Go for it, man! Perhaps someday, if I can get myself a good swift kick in the behind, and I continue with my lifelong dreams, our paths will surely cross.

Well, when that Bon Jovi song came on the radio ("It's My Life" or whatever) my family would always sing along and say "Sam's Gonna Marry A Chick Named Heather". So apparently, there's a lot of Heathers, including one in my destiny. LOL, family.
