Bah, I'm always a month behind on music releases. I've trained myself to get excited and then promptly forget about albums I'm looking forward to, so as to alleviate that excruciatingly long period of anticipation; alas, I also truly forget that the album was supposed to come out. Got me some Devin Townsend today, though. And this song... oh my god, it's so much FUN.
I also completely forgot Anneke was singing on this album 'til this song started up. God, I love her voice. <3

Holy crap, that jazzy hiphop is just what I need. SO good. Is it some by the Japanese guy? Because his English is fantastic.
I've been getting back into Asian music other than game music which I never got out of. Man, I love Utada Hikaru!
Might as well pull out the song that got me into her: Beautiful World, the ending theme for Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone!

Ah, now I feel dumb for not reading back that far, haha. Or thinking that song would be called jazzy hiphop. I'll blame it on just waking up. Here, some Utada Hikaru to distract everyone!

Good god, I LOVE the internet. I am a linkhopping explorer, and from the depths of the webz, I bring you a band that, according to last.fm, is practically unknown. "Ooooh.... ahhhh~" And they're pretty neat! All kinds of different instrumentation in each song, good melodic lines, and the singer isn't half-bad either! She's not the kind I generally listen to and a bit grating on a couple songs (And not on some others!), I think, but it works in context. Check out teh music on this page! www.starcrossd.net/

Dis song just blows your mind. Been looking for sth like this for a while, even if I'm not a fan of the genre...
Here's another good one in the same style, this time Japanese (awesome PV, too):

Talking about Asian music... just discovered this band, they're goddamn awesome. v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTQ1MDYxMzg0.htmlI wanna learn erhu more and more every day. @wyrd: 矢井田瞳 sounds extremely generic, but you're right, whoever directed the "cowboy" vid must've been on lots of crack or something. I now wanna know where he/she gets that stuff.

Well, I have only heard one or two songs so I can't really tell, but the cowboy song was nothing astounding tbh. Maybe she does better in other songs. Then again, I tend to generally dislike pop, so I have some prejudice against it. I'm also very demanding, so unless a person has something close to a well-trained operatic voice, I won't consider it "good"

IMO, X-Japan's singer is pretty horrible. I mean, at least compared to lead singers from bands in the same genre, like Iron Maiden, Stratovarius or Aria. Toshi's voice sounds too strained most of the time, and he just doesn't have the range. It does have a certain charm, but definitely not sth I'd call "good singing". Compare: X-J: v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNjc5Njk2MDQ=.htmlMaiden: v.youku.com/v_show/id_XOTIxNjI4MDg=.htmlStratovarius: v.youku.com/v_show/id_XOTIzMzcyOTI=.htmlAria: (this one may load a bit slowly): rutube.ru/tracks/92170.html?v=4b96c322fa1906b59caf3a6da03c72edYaiko's singing is definitely decent (well, there's always someone WORSE in pop music ), but it feels like her voice isn't "set" properly, sounds strained once in a while, and occasionally feels like she's about to go out of tune (although kudos to her, doesn't). I like singing with a clean and sharp attack, but then soft continuation. People singing "casually" doesn't really do much for me, you'd think if they bothered to perform, they'd try to learn something first Other Pop music... TBH, out of all Japanese singers, I only like Mizuki Nana-san, even if her voice is a bit weak at times (but then again, pretty common for Asian pop singers). Out of western pop, despite many people making fun of her, I really like Mylene Farmer's voice v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTEzMTMzOTE2.html I guess, the slightly raspy mature voice has its charm, and well, the range is truly amazing in this song (try 4:00).

I'm completely with Wyrd here. The power and sound from straining just... really clicks with me. That's part of why Carlos Zema is my favorite vocalist ever, although he's more of a metal falsetto kind of guy... That's also the main reason I LOVE the vocal Premonition arrange on the Felghana SAV.

Well, I don't deny that this kind of singing may have a certain charm for some people, (although I myself rather prefer a raspy voice to a strained voice), and the emotion behind it is largely product of the singer's charisma rather than singing technique, but you do realize that straining your voice means one of the two things: 1) the singer doesn't have the range to sing what (s)he is trying to sing; 2) the singer is using his/her voice "wrong", thus putting too much strain on it; right? So it actually means a relative LACK of control over their singing, because a voice strained too hard is harder to control, just like a string bowed too hard on a violin, for example; not to mention that it's easier to break. Stratovarius' singer does great on the high range, but pretty poorly in the lower range I never have been a huge fan of this band, but my friend used to be, and the way their singer goes into soprano range makes me wonder sometimes if he's still "fully male" I'd say my fav. classic HM singer would be Aria's Kipelov, at least until he got too old and his voice too broken... He isn't quite as "natural" on the high range, but has lots of power in the lower range, and overall used to kick ass. Then again, this was also one of the first bands I started to listen to, a "gateway band", so to say; I grew up on their songs so me being a bit biased is only natural. Oh, FYI, you're also talking to a guy who'd take a good growl/BM scream over mediocre pop/rock singing ANY DAY
