There's been a bunch of disjointed conversations and a stray thread here or there regarding music tastes that extend beyond the obvious (Falcom), but no dedicated thread, I've noticed, for discussing or sharing steuf. This is that. Hopefully this sparks the same kind of lively discussion the little train-of-thought convos in other miscellaneous threads have lead to. And I'm feeling really lazy right now, so I'm just gonna post a video, damnit. The thread should propagate itself! I love trance. Airbase is a god of trance. This is stuff he wrote. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYssLkqq3M8

Well, you could always turn this into the composer and musician topic.

I lucked out and one of three sellers on amazon.co.jp who had the out-of-print Zabadak CD I was looking for ships internationally. Still spent waaaaaaay too much, but oh well. Geez, the year on this is 1987. I barely even remember CDs existing back then. Vaguely Falcom-related fun fact: Zabadak worked with Arai Akino a few times, who in turn did the vocals for the song "Lilia." Everything begins with Ys and returns to Ys!!!

Trance music. OM NOM. I think I need you to hook me up with some good names, Ashurei. I love the stuff and always have, it's just er... hard to shop for, so to speak? And HEY. Old music threads are old. Nothing wrong with a new one from time to time, I think. XD MY PICKS NOW~~ I'm currently still addicted to Sound Horizon. I linked some of it once in the spammy thread, I think, but here are some favorites in a relevant thread. Here again, because they deserve posting... again. Some stuff from the 5th story, Roman. Introductory song, it's just good music. T_T MAKES. ME. CRY. And onward to the 6th one, Moira. May as well start with the opening song. =P And a later one. That's all I got for now. XD ALSO: I dig the guitar work on that first Portugal song. Very classic.

Trance isn't just hard to shop for, it's damn near impossible to pirate. My only bastion is DI.fm and looking up songs on youtube, since it seems you can find EVERY SONG EVER in video form on that site. Honestly... I don't know the scene very well, though. I know a couple names that you can link to awesome: Airbase, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk, Airbase, Oceanlab, Airbase... and Airbase. Also Airbase. I'm not a huge fan of Armin Van Buuren's music, but he's probably got the best damn Trance radio show ever. I don't take note of the names of songs I like very often... which I should, but he pretty much gives you 2 hours of trance gold every week. Which you can totally not download questionably legal mp3s of from some site somewhere. <_________________< Also, this: Also, the very first trance song I ever fell in love with; The video title lies, this is The Brothers Funk - Sunrise [Somatic Sense] So catchy! Also, omg Sound Horizon. I still go on crackwhore binges of youtube linkhopping ever since you emailed me the link of Moira. My goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood they OOZE brilliance. D: I really liked the instrumentation on that Zabadak track, but the guys voice didn't click too well with me. Might just be because the vocal sections are so ... plain, though. :/ Portugal the Man had some really funkeh guitar rhythms and awesomeness going.

Zabadak and Portugal the Man both sound awesome. You two have successfully interested me in both bands. -Tom If you want to listen to them more, Waiter: "You Vultures!" and The Satanic Satanist are their 2 best albums Glad you liked them!

playradioplay! - Madi Don't LeaveI thought my sister'd like this guy, so I showed him to her while I didn't like him that much... but then I started getting into it after she played the CD so many times, and now his music is always stuck in my head. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Down BoyI love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they're one of my favourite bands ever. I love Karen O's voice, and the way the music comes together. I like their most recent album tons which is exactly where this next song comes from! She's omega-sexy, IMO, although this video is kinda weird. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - ZeroSee what I said about sexy? This video is superb, and makes me wanna walk around and dance (for obvious reasons). Such a party song! Even the other members are attractive, and her voice alone is super pretty. Megadeth - 1,320I love Megadeth, and this is from their recent album which sounds a lot like their old stuff. Unlike Karen O of YYYs, Dave Mustaine is not hot. Very good song. Megadeth - Washington is NextA very melodic and face-punching awesome Megadeth song, and one of my favourites. This song actually got me into Megadeth and I probably sing it once a day as practise. I love it! Blind Guardian - Mirror MirrorVery very good song out of their concept album Nightfall On Middle Earth, which is in fact based on The Silmarillion. I love this song, and it has everything I need. Medieval sound, fast melodic guitar work, powerful singing (Hanzi <3). Everything. Blind Guardian - ValhallaAn earlier song of theirs when they had a larger thrash influence off their second album. This song is monster good, and it actually has a guest appearence from Kai Hansen, just like Hanzi Kursch appears on Gamma Ray's album Land of the Free. Blind Guardian - Bright EyesEither this or Mordred's Song are my favourite Blind Guardian song, both from the same album. Very emotional and sad, and also good to listen to. Not much I can say, just listen. From Imaginations from the Other Side. Blind Guardian - Mordred's SongI love Arthurian mythology, and this song is also very good. I had to link it since I referenced it and everyone should listen to it, its that good. Ayreon - Day 16 LoserI love Ayreon, they're definitely among my top artists, and this is probably the angriest song I know, if only for the ending. It contains such raw emotion, that Mr. Lucassen is a master at invoking so well, and is great musically. Ayreon - The Truth is HereAmazing side-story track on the album 01011001, probably my favourite of all the side-stories. Perfect electronics, and vocals. The story is clear, and it includes great references to other albums. Plus, the instrumentation~ So good. Ayreon - ComatoseThis song is dripping with atmosphere, and is a really good one. Next track is from the first album. Ayreon - Ye Courtyard Minstrel BoyI love this song so much, and in fact auditioned to vocal jazz with it. Of course I butchered the note matching that I had to do after I accidentally said I couldn't read music... Oh well, next year. The teacher who does it also does the music and choir (both of which I'm in) and she said that she recognizes I probably should be in it, but now it is too late to jump in. It is possible after the first big performance though, for me to join Dream Theater - As I AmDream Theater is another one of my tops, so this is a really good song for me. A lot more straight up than their other stuff, and I really like it. Its good. Dream Theater - Learning to LiveA great song about real problems (AIDS, actually) and it takes it all seriously. I love it, and should bring it up at the next GSA meeting, come to think of it... It might be good to use for something if HIV and AIDS comes up, which it will. One of my favourite DT songs. I'll cut it out.

I might as well add in my ten cents. Don't yell at me if I kill the forum, though. The Mellow:Yeasayer is one of the few indie bands that I've actually liked, and I can't really figure out why. They're just good. Dengue Fever: the best Cambodian pop group to not come from Cambodia. And they have psychedelic influences. Hell yeah. Couldn't find the song I really wanted to post, but hey, this is great too. Okay, this song is just amazing. Seriously, this song single-handedly got me addicted to psytrance. It's just... beautiful. Because I can't go without posting some delicious SlagsmÄlsklubben for very long. Probably one of my favorite songs by them. Nor can I go very long without posting something by the King of Northern Soul. Seriously, Edwin Starr has an insanely powerful voice. This is probably his best song, too; it's stupidly catchy. The Extreme:Oh, how I love you so, Strapping Young Lad. Devin Townsend is a freakin' genius, and this song proves it (and also that he is insane). Best parody song ever? Best parody song ever. Man, The Heathen has such an amazing falsetto. Hold onto your seatbelts folks, because this song is one HELL of a ride. Ass-kicking guitar wankery, bipolar vocals, and delicious bass. Yeeeeeeah. One of my favorite songs from the new album (which I ordered a couple weeks ago, hell yeah). Pure win and awesome. The Arcane Order are probably the second most talented band out there after the fall of Outworld, and this song proves it. Oh my god, the vocals and drums. AND THE KEYBOARDS. So simple, yet so pants-wettingly epic. I'll post some of my favorite progressive songs later. P.S.: Smithee, Ashurei, and lunar have awesome taste.

Good point.
Guess it's time for more music, then. This thread needz moar prog metuhlz.
Mercenary. Never. Gets. Old. This song is probably the best semi-ballad they've ever done, and one of their best songs period. Very emotional and melodic, while still being heavy.
Nevermore is, without a doubt, my favorite band ever, and this song could possibly prove why.
To-Mera are the very definition of 'progressive metal'. They manage to combine metal, jazz, and classical perfectly, meshing face-smashing guitar work with gorgeous keyboards, semi-operatic female vocals, and, yes, jazz breaks. That's probably the least impressive way to describe their music, though.
There's a reason I'm always wearing my Dark Empire shirt. It's because they KICK ASS. Matt Moliti is one of the best guitarists out there today, and he'll only keep getting better, which is actually kinda scary. Although, his bandmates are undeniably talented as well, especially ex-vocalist Jens Carlsson (I'm going to miss him, but hey, he's still in Persuader!)
Huh, as if it couldn't get any better. Anubis Gate is another highly recommended band. They're basically a heavier Dream Theater with more solid songwriting and much less annoying wankery. Oh, and they're Danish. Autowin much? This is easily one of their best songs, and it's one of their longest, as well. But it's totally worth sitting through it all.
What is it with me and prog metal? :/

Smithee posted a treasure trove of gold that I love. Winnar! Dream Theater's one of my metal gateway bands, for choor. Images and Words completely blew me away the first time I heard it. And Ayreon, omggggggggg. I didn't think too much of Arjen's latest release, though. Guilt Machine didn't really click with me like all of the Ayreon project has. :/
And Blind Guardian! YESSSsssssssss. :D
Mutagene: I totally loved the psytrance song, and really dug the Edwin Starr track. Agreex1000 on his voice! I really love that style of music whenever I hear it, I'm surprised I haven't gone out to try and find more of it. :x
The heavier stuff I'm not into I'm afraid. I will agree on Devin Townsend's genius - seriously, the man's a godly composer and producer -, but I tend towards his solo stuff more than SYL. I think Synchestra is the single greatest album he's ever done, and quite frankly one of the best albums ever.
Though I don't care for screamy type vocals very much, I will not deny that Devin is one of the few that I think pulls it off like a fuckin' GOD. Woven seamlessly into his normal singing on albums like Synchestra, his godyells are simply amazing.
This, dear friends, is my favorite song. Ever. Pain of Salvation is my favorite band, Daniel Gildenlow is my absolute favorite singer (his voice... oh my dear god it's amazing D: - I swear he has no limits on vocal range) and lyricist (I don't care too much about lyrics, so the fact that I LOVE his really says something) and damnit, probably one of my favorite composers ever, too.
If Devin Townsend can yell like a god, then Daniel Gildenlow... just, there are no words. When he sings the words "I'm beyond the pale" at the very end of the song before the outro part... that literally gives me chills every time I hear it. Truly incomparable.
One of my latest obsessions is Riverside. They are absolutely amazing in all regards. They have the most amazing synergy I've ever heard in a band, write some of the best melodies and most soulful and driving prog metal and they just completely kick your ass. And I swear they have the best keyboardist I've ever heard. That man knows how to play them keys like a pro without playing an incomprehensible flurry of notes for no good reason (sorry Jordan Rudess, but I hate your solos). There isn't a single boring song on thier latest album, Anno Domini High Definition. srsly, just wow.
Something from one of their older albums:
Sonata Arctica is also awesome;
And now for something completely different!
Yanni writes absolutely beautiful music. Ignoring the fact that I love the instruments chosen here, the melody itself is just so pretty. :)
I'll leave it there for now, though, or I could wind up writing a thesis on my own musical tastes. :p

I agree that Synchestra is the best album Devy's ever made, actually. I still listen to it frequently to this day. It's certainly one of my favorite prog metal albums ever. However, I enjoy all his stuff pretty much equally; I may have started with SYL, but I also enjoy Ki and 98% of his solo work. I kinda wish he used his operatic vocals more, though... seriously, in songs like Vampira and in the chorus of Wrong Side, he just sounds incredible. I've personally never been able to get into Pain of Salvation; I tried Entropia a while back and was bored to tears. I might consider trying some of their other stuff when I get the chance. Sonata Arctica is kinda... 'egh' to me. Very little of the classic 'flower metal' has gotten through to me; when it comes to power metal, I'm usually drawn more to the heavier/thrashier side (i.e. later Tad Morose, the German Brainstorm, anything Mystic Prophecy has put out, etc.), and while I have this massive hard-on for falsetto vocals, I'm not so much for the balls-in-vice-grip kind. I prefer power over pitch, and preferably with some emotion on the side. Which reminds me; I FORGOT A SONG. Holy hell, what is wrong with me today? Ahh, Communic. The finest Norwegians ever to wield their instruments. This is easily my favorite song by them; it's thrashy as hell and the vocals are insanely powerful, and despite being over 9 minutes in length and repeating sections frequently, it never gets boring. At all. It's that good. I've listened to it well over 100 times already. You know what? It still amazes me every time. I should probably take a nap now, but I refuse to. Too much awesomeness to absorb. EDIT: Those Riverside tracks are amazing. How have I not heard of them before? And they're POLISH? What the hell? *goes to get the new CD instantly* That Pain of Salvation track was actually better than I expected... the vocals were indeed very good, and the solo around the middle gave me a hard-on (I am a SUCKER for melodic shred), but outside of that and the main riff (which was nice), it wasn't very interesting musically. I'll check out the rest of Remedy Lane, though. One more track for good measure, and to prove how awesome Scar Symmetry is, and how melodic they can be in spite of being a predominantly death metal band: The single best track on the new album, and one of the best songs they've ever done (Holographic Universe's title track just barely beats it out). There really isn't a way to eloquently explain how damn good it is. P.S.: I like screaming vocals when they're done well. I think in order, though, my vocal style preferences go as such: 1. Powerful falsettos/emotional semi-operatic singing 2. Death grunts (as much as I love them, they should be used sparingly) 3. Screaming (when done right, it can be just as good, if not better than grunting, but it's generally done very poorly, i.e. mainstream screamo/-core/shitty excuses for music) Rant complete. Also, Riverside kicks ass.

I've actually really started to like Anubis Gate since you first linked them a while back. Still listening in to everything else you linked up there. So far I have to say I like To-Mera the most. The singer has an absolutely beautiful voice. Really digging the crunchy guitar rhythms and keyboard work, too. Even though I know Pain of Salvation isn't the most popular or even well-liked band out there, and I know people like different things! it still completely throws me off when people don't like them. Everything they write is so emotive and spans so many different emotional appeals! Not to mention they touch on so many genres and do each one so skillfully. Ah well. I can't blame ya for Sonata Arctica, either, though for different reasons. They are a bit more mainstreamy than most, I think, and I can see where ya come from on the vocals note. I actually edited my post just after you posted your last one with a few songs from Riverside - should definitely check that stuff out. I'll be damned if you don't like them, sir. They're phenominal.
