well you can check the PSP thread... look for wyrdwad's posts in particular This price drop still doesn't do it for me... it can price drop all it wants, it isn't until there's a game for it that I really must have that I will want a PSP. But if it somehow gets cheaper than (or maybe as cheap as) a DS Lite over here, I'll have to get one and MHX and EEE or something. I was thinking of borrowing my cousin's PSP to play it, but I waited too long and now his is broken (and he's the only one I know that had one) edit: where did gnosis's post go...

Q1: Do you like ports? Q2: Do you like ports a whole lot? Q3: What about licensed games? Q4: If you don't like ports or licensed games, can you read Japanese? Q5: Do you like importing? Q6: Do you like being able to alter a system and install programs it's not really supposed to have? Q7: Are you willing to do this?
Tabulate the the number of yes answers.
For me, there's really not much of a reason to get a system that can't stand on its own software and US releases. All ports and firmwares do not make a satisfied Captain. For all my negativity, it's not terrible if you don't mind installing emulators and such, but it seems more trouble than it's worth for something that is primarily ports and licensed games.
Someday, maybe it'll have enough stuff to really stand on its own for me. I don't have much faith in it, though.

His question had to do with the price going down making it more worth it. Actually, wasn't there news about a PSP redesign coming out? I'd say to wait and see how that shapes up... if you answered yes to most of Captain's questions, that is

The PSP plays PS1 games now so I would say its worth it.

Emulation on PSP sucks. Keep that in mind. Unless you like low frame rates and seveeeeere (severe!!!!) ghosting (sure, the ghosting is just as severe for every PSP game of course, but it isn't as noticable in 3d games).

For all the Falcom games, yes, that's right, including the LOH games in english! I don't care if the translations aren't so hot, they're in ENGLISH! That's enough for me to rejoice. And, Gurumin rocks, as do the Megaman games, & Mercury is really cool, as is LocoRoco, that game is a blast. The Gradius, Twin Bee, Salamander, & Parodius collections are nice. And Daxter rocks! And, it's starting to sound like Konami is actually finally going to release the Suikoden 1 & 2 pack over here, for those that missed the PS1 versions! I have the Jp version, as well as the original's, but, I'll be picking up the US one if it happens. Speaking of Konami, Rondo of Blood remake! Hopefully it will pan out to be very nice. I think it's being done by the same teams that did the DS Castlevania's, so, good chance it'll rock! Not to mention having the game in english finally!
I still like my DS better, but, I like the PSP for those reasons!

Hmm. . .if this is true, I won't be looking for any other reason. That and I've wanted to try Princess Crown since hearing about it on these very forums.

It would be cool if they would also release both Suikogaiden visual novel games for PSP... in English. Yeah, I don't see that happening, it'd be nice, since, I love the series, but, I'm not gonna count on that. As for 1 & 2, supposedly a Konami rep gave like a 40% chance of it coming, maybe partially due to Square released FF 1 & 2(though, on those, they're seperate!).

The reason I bought a DS was because that was where most of the good games were. Things have gotten a little more complicated, now that Konami is releasing Dracula X: Rondo of Blood for PSP. It's enough to make me shake my fist at the heavens and say "DAMN YOU!!!" Rondo of Blood, a PSP exclusive...

Man, reading this thread makes me sad. Many good things has been said about the system, and most of them are true, which makes it sound like a very appealing device. Unfortunately, in the end, all these features are rendered useless because of the horrible hardware. The controls are crap, the screen is crap and it is actually painful to play it. Damn it. I'm going to sell my PSP, I just can't play on it, as much as I'd like to.

Wyrdwad, which is the lengthiest game or game with the most replay value on the PSP? I've been playing Kirby Canvas Curse, Tetris DS, and Meteos since their releases in early 2005 and still haven't squeezed everything out of them. My meteos game has recorded over 250 hours so far. The lengthy games are there, but most of them are based on replay value instead of length (I'm sure PSP has those too though, like Lumines probably). Then again, I haven't played all the original RPGs that have come out for it, which I'm guessing are pretty damn lengthy. and as long as a new Lufia never becomes part of that 60 gajillion long RPGs list (and I'm guessing 99% of those are ports ), I don't think I'll be compelled to get a PSP for any RPGs. and i'm not really looking for a portable emulator either... and the Rondo remake still doesn't look appealing enough to me yet. I've played through SotN and Rondo enough times, I don't see why I should get a PSP for this portable one. Instead, it seems everything I DID want to play the most, exclusive to PSP, is now loosing it's exclusivity and coming to systems I own anyways. Mercury Meltdown, for example. I finally got to play Lumines on PS2 as well... it turns out I really don't like it, despite being made by the same team as Meteos was.

I have played a PSP. Nothing in the world could help make Street Fighter Alpha 3 or any fighter on PSP less uncomfortable. It's almost universally decided that the PSP isn't a very comfortable device. and I would hate making something as big as the PSP even bigger by using attachments. I went through that with the original GBA and I'd never wanna go through that again (stupid flood light). My pockets were just about ready to burst until I got a DS lite.
But I have found that PSP appeals to some people who would never touch a handheld otherwise. I think it's because the PSP defies what makes a good handheld game: the pick-up-and-play factor. The PSP can be for people who want a console on the go (among other things), and I'm just not one of those people. I love handheld games that I can play in short, fun bursts and not have to worry about finding a save point.
This is why I've been saying that the games appealing to me most on PSP are games like EEE, Mercury Meltdown, and Lumines (which turned out to be a game I found boring...). They're original, not ports, and they're fun games you can play in short bursts. Unfortunately for PSP, those games are being made available on other platforms, so...

The screen has potential. It is large and in widescreen, which is extremely important. I don't really like the DS either because of the tiny screen, it just doesn't work. The original Game Boy is the only portable console I've used which worked well even though the screen was tiny. That is simply because the games were truly made for that thing. Most DS games are either ports of SNES/N64 games or they're trying to be SNES/N64 games. That doesn't work for me. Not on that screen. Anyway, the problem I have with the PSP screen is the ridiculous ghosting. What kind of junk screen did they use for that? It renders all 2d games unplayable, and many 3d games suffer from it as well. It's not quite as noticable in 3d games as everything tends to move around faster, but for the 2d games it's just awful. I agree about the size of the PSP. While it looks kinda ugly because of it's size, it really needs to be bigger. A lot bigger, in fact. I haven't touched the PSP in over a month because I got some serious issues with my hands after playing Gurumin. I can't continue playing it, I don't want my hands to hurt like that again. I'm thinking about installing the game on my PC again. I really wanted to finish it for once.

You can "hide" ghosting resonably well in software by certain ways of scrolling the screen, etc but you can never change the hardware in software. The ghosting is caused by a slow screen (hardware) and you can't make the screen faster without replacing it with a different model.

That brings up something else I wanted to ask. What exactly is homebrewing and what models of PSPs can one do this on?
