Ahahaha, Nunuu, I can't smoke right now, I'm laughing so hard... XD You're so right!! XD And Mustafa DOES make me think of Mufasa, haha... And wow, yep, it IS the five great dragons. Whew, I'm glad to hear it lives up to its reputation though. I was scared they wouldn't be able to do much with five dragons. The fat one in the windy place was CRAZY!!! He was like Possessed King Dedede (of Kirby's Dreamland 2/3) on crack!! Where the hell does eating with one's stomach come from?! Is that more Japanese lore referendum, like evil possessed umbrellas?

I dunno. I didn't find most of the dragon fights amazing. The fire one was yawn, the water one was all "GODDAMMIT, STOP SWIMMING AWAY!" and the moon one was eh as well.
The fat bat one (wind?) annoyed me.
I think the best one was Earth. :P
However, I'm certain that if I fought them on Hard mode, I would think quite differently! Afterall, I enjoyed the early fights on Hard. ^^~

I played on hard and wasn't overlevelled.
Earth - Best. Thing. Ever. Fire - Definitely the worst. Didn't vary its attack pattern at all and just ambled around. I pretty much just played chicken with my item supply. Wind - BAT LASER. Pretty cool boss, but not exceptional. Water - Thought this one was going to be the easiest... until it regenerated its entire HP bar. Then it was just evil. Moon - Definitely the hardest, I was expecting a dungeon, not to be thrown straight into the battle. Then I died 3 times. This was the battle I finally learned how to flash guard in though (cleanly blocking that gigantic monster laser is awesome), and was immensely satisfying when I finally won.
So yeah, Earth > Moon > Water > Wind > Fire for me.
Also, even though it isn't a dragon fight I'd like to give special mention to that colosseum boss. That fight was an awesome callback to Felghana/Origin for me - weak weapon, no skills, one healing item. It was so tense when I finally beat it - one more hit and I would've been done for.

I consider that coliseum boss to be the one to ensure that the player has mastered guarding by that point. The boss is easy with guard since its attacks are rather slow and it's easy to figure out timing for guard. Also, I think everyone agrees that the earth dragon is the best boss ever in Ys 7 (or at least the best dragon fight). Too bad the rest of dragons did not match up to that level of epicness. Which party did you use for dragon fights? I used the following for each: Earth - Elk, Adol, and Sigroon Fire - Mustafa, Adol, and Sigroon Wind - Mishera, Adol, and Dogi Water - Aisha, Adol, and Crshe Moon - Adol, Dogi, and Geis

I agree, that was a major turning point in the story (a story of which I don't even understand, but when you SEE what happens, you don't NEED to 'understand' the importance of this battle) and the battle was simply amazing. It was a nice change of pace, as much as I'd like to compare it to Sword of Mana / Final Fantasy Adventure. Typical, rehashed, but fresh! I couldn't believe they DID THAT to our poor red-haired adventurer! // I still don't know how to guard. I just dodge-roll like HELL!

So Fire Dragon sucked on Hard as well? It was seriously, by far, the most lame fight out of the five. I wonder if it was the last one they (programmers) programmed so they just gave up on making things challenging. XD I mean, the only thing that really threw me off was its bloody high HP and the fact that I didn't know you could go down those holes ... >_>;;;;;;; As for the parties used, mine was usually Adol, Dogi/Elk, Sigroon/Aisha. I always had an archer in mine. :P Ranged attacks rock my world. I still don't know how to guard. ;) I just dodge-roll like HELL! Easiest way to do it without triggering an EX skill is to hold the R button and then hit L. And dodge-roll is the best! ;__;! But I suppose learning guard would be super useful in the harder difficulties. ^^

Agreed! Mishera is sweet! ...and to answer fireinthehole, I went with Adol, Geis, and Mishera (maining her) for the Wind Dragon. The sub-boss before was kindof epic using her skills. I was way under-levelled, which made it all the more incredible for me!

Interesting. I found ranged attacks to be inferior to melee attacks since many ranged attacks require the characer to be rather close to the enemy to be really effective and in such distance, I would rather have my melee fighter smack the enemy with strong skills. I did use dodge roll instead of guard in fields and dungeons since enemies die easily enough even without extra damage from guarding properly. On that note, I liked using Mishera outside of boss fights since her skills were ranged and did not require her to be close and she could just dodge if enemy comes close enough to her.

The Wind Dragon was built for Archers and Sorcerers though! He was definitely annoying to go after with Adol and Geis, but charging Mishera's magic to get him from afar, and then spamming her 100 SP skill, and then her EX skill was just awesome. That battle just screamed for long-distance attacks! Plus the music, setting, etc. -- it was all just incredibly neat in my book! I never thought her magic would actually go as high up as he did, but it was neat to get him on the fly. XD It's like "HA! You can't escape me!"... and then when he came back trying to devour you with his stomach, like I said, I haven't seen crazy shit like that since Kirby's Dreamland 3 and Kirby 64, and it was actually alot more threatening in this game. Oh, what the heck is that status effect that prevents you from attacking? It doesn't stun you unless you try to attack. I've never seen that before!

If you charged up your attacks, you didn't need to be close with either Aisha OR Mishera. A charged shot from Aisha will go all the way to the other side of the screen, and shooting bosses from a distance using charged shots from either character is a great way to build up a full SP meter, then you can switch over to a melee character to unleash huge attacks. That's my usual strategy for bosses. -Tom My strategy for bosses is to use normal combo, guard, counterattack with strong skill, use normal combo (and use the skill again if the boss doesn't attack), guard, counterattack, and so on. Occasionally, dodge some attacks that cannot be guarded against and use the extra skill for massive damage. Guarding really takes out the need to use ranged attackers, IMO. The Wind Dragon was built for Archers and Sorcerers though! He was definitely annoying to go after with Adol and Geis, but charging Mishera's magic to get him from afar, and then spamming her 100 SP skill, and then her EX skill was just awesome. Well, that's why I bring Mishera to that particular fight - to shoot it while it's flying around. When it's on the ground, I just use Adol and Dogi to beat the living daylights out of it. Also, for that big laser, I usually dodge it instead of guarding it since the swallowing move that comes right after it will miss for sure if you are rolling away from the laser.

I still don't understand why I'm the only one that experienced FRUSTRATION with the AI-controlled characters.
Why frustration? Well, it's mainly because I do most of the fighting in boss battles!! >:P They seriously WILL NOT attack unless I'M attacking. It drives me INSANE.
Ergh. :P

I'll take that over spending half of the battle healing/reviving the rest of the party anyday.

I entirely agree! I wish they'd just get to fighting/collecting and nevermind making me lead! >:(
// Wyrd and fireinthehole are spot-on with that battle and strategies, though! :) That's exactly what I did and how I felt, it was intense! :D

That's the case in Hard mode as well, but not in Nightmare.
Speaking of which... I think I'll restart on Nightmare. As if I haven't been playing it slowly enough. :/

I'll take that over spending half of the battle healing/reviving the rest of the party anyday. But Falcom could code them in a way that they're not STUPID like that. I mean, typically, when they're fighting they do a pretty good job evading attacks (on Normal)! The only time they seem to mess up is when I execute a skill and they go goofy and do it in a middle of an enemy attack. :P

I'm just glad that when the AI is controlling a character, that character CANNOT DIE. At least, in normal mode. His/her HP only goes down to 1 unless and until you take control. -Tom That's the case in Hard mode as well, but not in Nightmare. Not really, it IS like that in Nightmare difficulty as well, I'm absolutely certain of it. The AI controlled allies also inflict and take half the normal damage, which is quite neat. Falcom really thought of things very well.

I haven't gotten to fight yet, but the town wandering has been fun. I like the map, how fast the characters move, how easy it is to chat with npc's, and the character switching. I also really dig the opening vid

Wicked info man, it will definitely help. Can you just gain exp by using the special attacks on the field, or do I have to hit an enemy with it?
