...I know 0 about them ^^; Seeing as many of you peeps here probably have one [unless there's a PSP emulator I don't know about o.O] I was thinking maybe I can persuade my parents to get me one for x-mas if they won't get me a new TV [why yes I am 22 and have an income, but they asked so... XD] I know I can bootleg the heck out of my DS with my flashcarts , but I have no idea how stuff like that works on a PSP... or if that's even possible anymore ^^; [it would be cool to play PS1 games on it ^^;] So yea, I know there's a few different version of PSPs out there, not sure what would be the best/most ideal one to go for though ^^; Thanks in advance

I used to hate the PSP. I had a DS for a couple of years before finally buying a PSP for Phantasy Star Portable 1 (and I got a great deal on a 3000-series since Circuit City was going out of business). Well, I practically never touched my DS again until Phantasy Star Zero. My PSP took over my portable gaming.
Also I have a 3000-series and have no problems with the display. I can kinda see the individual pixels of the LCD matrix at times, but it's no game stopper. And I love the TV out. I normally don't play portable games at home, but now I just play the PSP on my TV all the time.

Exactly. I'm still being promised 200$ from my dad, but when I get it I'm not sure what to do.
Yeah, I could get a PSP and I already have a library for it (over 15 games, I'm sure.) or I could get a DC with a bunch of stuff...
I'm thinking, now I'm thinking, that I'll get the PSP. The DC will cost like nothing, so I can get money later for that. But when am I gonna have 200$, y'know? Thanks Wyrd, you helped me make sense of that.

PSP IS LOVE! I won't add to wyrd's post much but I just wanted to say that adding CFW can be tricky business because depending on your model, you may or may not be able to.
I think the newest ones and certain motherboards from the 200x series kind of prevent CFW from being put on them.
You also need a battery known as the Pandora battery for 200x models. The original PSP doesn't need it.
Oh yeah, both DS and PSP games may also have Jolly Roger thwarting code and require patches to run! Of course, there are other reasons in getting an R4 cart or CFW for PSP like for homebrew stuff!

Yeah, I guess I just think of getting regional games before foreign stuff.
I'll probably get the Rock Band Unplugged bundle.

Of course, there are other reasons in getting an R4 cart or CFW for PSP like for homebrew stuff! Actually, even with the TA88v3 motherboard, which is the one that previously blocked all cfw, there are programs to bypass it and get cfw. Same goes for the PSP 3000. The only thing to remember is you must have official firmware 5.03 firmware; any higher than that and it won't work. This also doesn't require a pandora battery. If by some miracle you buy a PSP 2000 and it has a TA88v2 motherboard, then you will need a pandora battery, though. But the chances of that happening are very, very slim. An easy and relatively failsafe way to check is if your PSP comes with official firmware 4.01 or something below that. Former means TA88v3, latter means not TA88v3. And just for accuracy's sake, you don't need patches to run any of the current psp games on CFW, since team GEN released a new build of their CFW not too long ago.

Heh... I thought I was gonna get a Dreamcast instead. But this thread makes me want a PSP again! D: I'll shoot you if you do that Smithee. PSP may be awesome, but its no Dreamcast! Any who, TC, the PSP is awesome. I've gone through a few, but because the console is so good, I've decided to keep coming back for more. Its more or less an RPG machine, which means if you don't like the genre then stay away. That's not to say there isn't other good genres to enjoy, just that there is a pretty small number in comparison. If you are wanting to collect a barrage of titles, most of them will end up as RPG's. Also, its region free, which means there are 3 awesome markets to pick games from. While its not as portable as I'd like it to be, the PSP is a great "On the couch" console, and works even better with the TV out cables. As previously mentioned, its very much an extension of the PS2/PSone line. Therefore, if you enjoyed ether of those consoles to a certain degree, the PSP will be something you will appreciate. Also, be warned the QC isn't the greatest, and problems do arise from time to time. I can assure you, Sony's replacement process is fantastic, and dealing with them is always very easy. Just be sure to keep a receipt, and you shouldn't have any issues. In case you are wondering, I wouldn't snag extended warranty on a PSP. If its going to blow up, you'll notice signs within the first month of use. So, in closing I totally recommend the PSP as a viable console purchase. Its got a cool library, and is very unique as a gaming system. SMITHEE!!! IF YOU ARE STILL READING THIS, YOU BETTER BUY THAT DAMN DREAMCAST!!!!

Yeah, I know! See, that's the other thing, I've got that gift from you... And I know the PSP would break again. I freaking hate portable consoles anyways, who am I kidding.
The Dreamcast it is... I mean really, and I've known it for a while to be this way.
edit: I was really tired, but now I'm in some kinda tired zen. We'll just call it brief lapse of insanity, probably induced by Wyrd's skill as a salesmen (or his charming good typing).

If you get a PSP, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Star Ocean: Second Evolution can't be recommended enough! Just sayin'

I actually own Lenneth, but man I have a funny story about that one.
I'm never allowed to play it again. You see, I happened to have taken a shower, and the PSP was being charged in the bathroom, so I noticed it coming out. It was being charged there probably because the other outlets were full, or someone wanted to look at porn on it, or something. Anyway, I started playing the game, from a random save point my brother was at, and my brother walked in.
Honestly, it is probably the most embarrassing thing ever. Because, how normal is it? I mean, you'd almost expect to find a guy like me spending some time not alone, but with himself, if you know what I mean. But here I was just playing Valkyrie Profile... And my brother told me never to play it again. I didn't even notice him there for a moment.
I guess it had been a while, which is why he came barging in like that, ahahahaha.

Heh... stop confusing me Wyrd. He's already getting me a VGA cable for the thing, so I can play shmups on a nice computer screen vertical and everything! I basically owe it to him to get the Dreamcast. And imagine all the nifty stuff I can get with it all at once! No waiting! As for VP: Did you try playing it naked

I'm gonna start recommending that to people when they don't get into games well from now on.
Because seriously, it worked.

Valkyrie Profile was okay, it's just that getting the A-ending was tedious, and the other endgame routes kinda suck. Oh, but VP2 is very great, it has one of the best battle systems I've seen in a game. I have to agree about Star Ocean, though, those are just your entirely average JRPGs you play when you have nothing else to spend your time on. I guess that's okay too sometimes, though.

I'll agree that of all the tri-Ace games I've seen, VP2 has been the most interesting-looking. Haven't actually tried PLAYING it, but it looked pretty cool. -Tom Don't bother, it's absolutely awful. One of a small handful of games I've bought that I genuinely regret even bothering with, and most of that is down to the joke of a battle system, which basically consists of jumping around a lot. JUMP oops you missed, enjoy watching yourself be beaten around for a while before you can try jumping again. It's just no fun at all. Also, Dreamcast > PSP, and complain about the DC's controller all you like but at least I didn't have to take a break after fighting every boss on DC games because my thumb was practically bleeding!

Heheh, I just realized that term could be taken literally for a keyboard. And well, y'know I'll get the Dreamcast. I'll get the Dreamcast. Please, Wyrd, don't twist my choice any further!

I think Varion never figured out how to play VP2 properly, since it's actually an incredibly easy game. It does have a somewhat steep learning curve, though, you don't just pick it up and play like an ace.
Wait, why would someone want a Dreamcast in this day and age?

The dreamcast has actually aged really well if you have it connected to the VGA. I was playing on mine for the 10th anniversary and honestly, other than the lack of widescreen none of the games would look out of place as PSN titles. It's cheap, it has a stellar library of games, it still looks great, why not?
wyrdy I need a switchable pair of your hands for when I'm playing PSP games, clearly.

So, seems like a v200x would be the best choice for me, [really, I'm using my phone right now to reply here, as well as send texts, I hardly ever use it to actually call people XD So a PSP phone would be useless to me. I don't actually like using phones, but I'm probably just weird ^^;] Does custom firmware effect the PSP at all? Like playing of legit games? [at least theres no region racism ;>>] Having a ps1 emulator makes more sense than buying games I already own Can it play other kinds of games too? Dreamcast? Things really do go offtopic in here XD [I've only played one once, so I can't say I have much of an opinion on it ^^;]
