It plays like a cross between Diablo, Zelda, and a single-player MMORPG -- a very damn good one, mind you.

The bosses are fantastic, tricky, cunning... your typical Falcom bosses, although a little more evil looking. The soundtrack is a mixed bag. Don't expect Ys, because it's full of french-sounding haunted ballroom-style BGMs. There's a handful of really good tracks, however -- I liked it.

...oh, and the length varies depending on how you level up. I'd like to say 15/20 hours, or even longer if you do all of the extra stuff.

Xanadu Next is one of Falcom's best games IMHO, and also has one of Falcom's best soundtracks. It's not your typical Falcom rock, but it IS really fantastic, moody, ambient music, the likes of which Falcom has never composed for any other game. It's quite entrancing. And the game itself... is just pure joy. I compare it to Super Metroid, myself... it's got the Metroidvania structure, with one big interconnected world, and the map design is simply fantastic. No other game I've played this decade - with the possible exception of Opoona - has been as fun to explore. -Tom That good eh, like what I hear. Hmmm, sounds like BIG GAME.... As I mentioned before I know absolutely no Japanese so will I have really big trouble with this game or its not exactly that complex?

Yep, it's an awesome game. Now I'm right before the last boss battle. Been stuck there for the past couple of weeks. Been trying very hard to level up to the maximum level of 30. My patience is running out and I'm only at level 26. It's exhausting and I'm thinking of giving up and just fight the last boss.

As I mentioned before I know absolutely no Japanese so will I have really big trouble with this game or its not exactly that complex? You should be fine with some sparse references to a walkthrough. I can't read Japanese, either Just finished this game last night! I'm proud to say that I completed it pretty much by myself The only help I got was for item descriptions and to find one bugger of a door I managed to miss in Xanadu castle. Granted my completion time was upwards of 27hours (I get lost easily, heh), I am still proud to have completed it -ud

I wonder if the author is up to updating the walkthrough cuz there are some errors in it like the description for two of the Guardian Cards are swapped. :/ Plus, yeah, Ganesha had a ??? next to it so I just moseyed on over to the Japanese Xanadu Next wiki and did some copy and paste into the Nifty translator to find out what it did. Also, in the boss fight of the giant eyeball/beholder thing, there's no mention that if you strike the thing while it has a certain coloured barrier with the corresponding spell (re: red barrier with fire, yellow with thunder, etc.), the barrier will dispel and it won't do the bloody laser attack. (Is it even possible to outrun the broad beam laser? >_>) Question!!!!!!!! Can you get more than one stat boosting fruit from Agnes (アニエス ... Uh, I'm only writing her name in English (French?) like that cuz Google popped up a result for アニエス・ベー(agnès b. フランス語発音:アニェース・ベ)))? For example, if you keep going to the spot in the Clover Ruins II where she appears, will she eventually sell you another Strength Fruit thing? I spent lots of time going constantly getting her to re-appear there, the Ancient Path, and the mountains and she never sold another one of those fruits. XD Instead, she kept trying to peddle off a Black Onyx or tell me she had nothing. Damn her! Oh yeah, I'm about to embark on my journey into the Xanadu Labyrinth. Wheeee. Is that my walkthrough you're talking about? If so, I'll definitely update one day 8) Someone sent me a lot of info which I need to put in, but I intend on playing it through again to make sure everything's right. Which Guardian cards are the wrong way round? And my Japanese certainly isn't the best in the world, that's why there may be plenty of errors. But if anybody's willing to correct those then please, let me know!

I did it recently and it seemed to work exactly like how Wyrdwad described. By default though, it looks for Xanadu Next in the C:\Falcom folder, so if you've installed it elsewhere that could be what is throwing the error. Also try running the patch in Japanese mode on your PC or through Applocale.

Finally got to playing the game... I must say it's pretty fun (not Ys-fun but good nonetheless), a bit too much grinding but what can one do... The biggest thing I'm sad about is that the game doesn't scale the same way as the Ys games, so no widescreen Xanadu for me...
Any other games similar to Ys Vi and on or Xanadu Next you guys would recommend?

I'll have to try that sometime later then, thx for suggestion.
As for the music, it's kinda cool, I do miss the kickassedness of Felghana and Origin though... It's kind of has that 1001 nights feel to it... Also, does anyone else think the Ancient Ruins theme sounds just like Inspector Gadget theme? >___>

Found it! Doesn't this, starting 1:38 www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HjFWwEqx-ksound just like this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o1-PlON3ssEvery time the theme comes on in the game I find myself singing along >___< And yeah, that theme you posted, that's like the final boss theme or sth, right? I'm not quite there yet in the game... On the issue of GRIND: the game itself is not that bad about it normally, as far as all roguelikes go anyway; the grind part comes in if you get stuck on a boss and/or find yourself having lo level down to redistribute the stats... quite annoying that. Still, almost had to do it (instead grinded to level UP more) when I got stuck on the one-eyed spider boss. It's like Falcom Sound Team wanted to make a subtle, atmospheric soundtrack... but then was like, ehhhh, we might as well make ONE of the tracks kick ass and take names. That's sort of what YsVI was like too, most of the OST is pretty calm except for the intro and maybe another track or two.

And yes, now that you've pointed that out, I can't help but notice similarities... and I just hope I can refrain from thinking of those similarities in the future, 'cause maaaan, that's gonna get stuck in my head now. -Tom Serves ye right fer pointing out the new-castyness of Redmont arrange. BAH!

I should pick up this game sometime.
Then again, I had to uninstall Zwei II to make room for other games that I could actually understand... :/
I'm about to give on PC gaming anyway, since I can't get rid of these trojans. And they cause all my games to lag HORRENDOUSLY at random intervals. I'm trying to get to the Silent Desert in YsO right now so I can see if the Hugo 1 damage glitch happens with me, and failing because I keep having to warp back, save the game, and wait until it's playable again.

Oh, and regarding the spider boss... you really had to level-up to kill it? Weird... I found myself at just the right level when I first got to it, and didn't really have all that much trouble killing it... luck of the draw, maybe? -Tom I was level 10 when I got there, and basically did one damage per hit with melee or most spells. I also never leveled up the guardian that gives extra XP, and put most of my points into STR/REF/CON sinceI rarely use magic anyway. So when I got there, and saw that you can only kill the thing with magic, I was in lots of trouble ^__^" I basically ran out of spells to cast before I got the thing down to half HP. Also, does anyone know what the Ganesha guardian does? It says sth about extra endurance or w/e but I can't make it out.

I have avast!, and it won't do anything to the trojans. I'll try getting AdAware and NoScript, though.

NoScript is basically the best thing ever. Next to nothing will load on a page unless you explicitly allow it or whitelist it. I had gobs of virus issues that required a good 3 HD wipes over the past few years, and I've been 100% clean since using that (almost a year now!).
