Like how I donated to NightWolve $5 after the leak, to show him I'm grateful to him and that I was willing to share something with him even though I could have just gotten his patch without spending a dime. Just saying, because while "kindness" could also kind of work, "gratefulness" is more accurate, or even "appreciation/support". (Not that it was worth just $5, or anything less than a hundred or a thousand or ten thousand times that value, in terms of work that went into it, and how helpful it was to all fans. Which reminds me, I should have donated to Deuce, too...) Not that NW reacted the right way, but we absolutely are not the ones to talk: While I also disagreed with his behavior, it certainly was 100% understandable, and it's easy for us to talk when it's not us who are wearing his shoes... With that said, I'm glad he seems to be doing better nowadays out there than, say, 1 year ago.Edit: Had to strike through that last line. But it's almost like there's a split personality... =|

Of course , if she really has sold the script to a third party does kind of complicate matters. But as long as she had permission from the other Team Members who helped her achieve that translation of the script (such as the dumped script / insertion tools, et cetera) to sell it, then I think it's completely her call to sell her translation. I'm sorry to feel like I might be starting something up with again this statement, especially since tempers finally cooled a bit in this thread, but I do want to point something out... In the case of a licensed game using the script by a fan translator, I don't think it goes 1:1- fan patch:licensed version. In fact, I highly doubt it will, since I am 100% sure that the fan group will use different tools than the localization team would. As a result, most of what was done for the script would be thrown out- all of the programming to pull/dump the script, etc etc- and the new script files would be handed over. The only thing that remains at that point is the translation that was done. Basically, the licensed version is handing over files that would've made the translation possible, but the translator from the fan translation group would probably simply insert what they've done into the script. And having a script dumped is not the thing that makes a translation possible. It's access to the text. And in most cases, that can be simply obtained by playing the game (even script dumps aren't perfect. I've found when checking game scripts, I still have to go back in and play the game quite a bit to make sure I understand the context of strings in the script), or by the localization group handing the files to the translator. I'm not saying that the work done by the programmers is nothing- it isn't. Without them, the fan translation wouldn't exist! ...but when a script is bought, it is not the script as retrieved by the group, AFAIK- it's specifically the translation. Everything else is stripped from it.

I agree with this, 100%. For a simple game like Brandish, the result is the same. But for more modern games, Falcom's programmer is using a custom tool to build those script files, guaranteed. Their custom tools are probably quite complicated, with features like measuring audio length for voiced lines and inserting the appropriate text speed code. And many more features like that which make it easy to do what they want, like camera and character movements, and turn the script for what should happen into the script code that can be read by the game engine. When I do it, I just skip over anything I don't understand (without change) and hope it works. I don't understand this part. But I agree with you that a fan translation need not have a programmer to be successful. In this case, the result becomes a set of subtitled let's play videos. Good examples are YouTube users EnglishSubs4All and Yangxu. What really makes projects possible are translators, such as the aforementioned YouTube users. I am using some evidence from personal experience: -I got enough hacking done on "Wander Wonder" to insert the script however one would like (at least when it comes to text boxes). I think the hold up on this project is the lack of a translator. -There seems to be interest in "Ys vs Sora no Kiseki." But, no interest from a translator (yet), so no project. Or at least, no project that can produce a good result. -The successful projects, Brandish and Nayuta, had a translator, so they were (eventually) successful. It required some thought, but I think I understand now. That statement is worded in a negative way, and it would be more understandable if worded in a positive way, i.e., "It's translators that make projects possible."

Not as many now as there used to be, due to the prevalence of people wanting to make patches. I remembered when I played Tales of the Abyss, my Japanese wasn't as good as it is now. As a result, I used a translation faq to assist me with the game while I played it instead of a patch for the game. That kind of thing happens when you have a translator that doesn't have a hacker working alongside them. When I started to work on for Sora no Kiseki FC waaaay back in the day before XSEED had it, the original plan was to post the translations to a website, broken down into chapter and subchapter format for people to browse through as needed without potentially coming across spoilers for later in the game. It wasn't until I worked with Nightwolve for a bit that it turned into actually becoming a patch. In the case of a releasing a patch, the hackers and the translators have a bit of a symbiotic relationship. One requires the other to be successful in that endeavor, but translators don't necessarily need to have their work in the game for their work to be successful. Most of my translation work of late has been coming from magazines and books, and I don't bother doing 'scanslation' style work of them- I typically just format them for text documents and voila, I'm done. If I want to be artsy in photoshop, I may be tempted to do it, like the chronological breakdown of the Kiseki games that I posted on my twitter account for Endless History a couple of days ago. I feel that it's in the prerogative for the translator to talk to the team they worked with, but the translation is the translation and belongs to the translator. I don't think that a translator's work is completely out of the picture without the hacker and team involved, since they're fully capable of releasing such thing without them- just not hacked into the game.

I would assume it is, considering the main conceit of the series is that you play as two characters together.

Hey Vyse,
I'm pretty sure that this is still an open project which recently became active again. They have a very capable hacker so I think It's just a matter of time at this point and his schedule.
If the project were to die out though, our team at HeroesofLegend.org has offered to assist if need be since we definitely want to see their project be successful.

erm... well... I'm sorry... I just wanted to show my dedication by bumping this thread each month. I won't bump it anymore... ( ̄3 ̄) And also... If I may, there's never been a problem with bumping posts on ALoY; Necroposting is fair game here, anyone can do it. Though members have also checked on the well being of others publicly in the past, preferences and your mileage may vary. If the translation team wishes, we will assist in any way needed to ensure that their topics are handled appropriately, including lock/unlock requests (an effective "do not disturb" sign), etc. We've assisted other translators in very much the same way. What happened to jakeslogan. He used to come bump this about once a month. 91 posts all in this thread. For a 115 year old you had to admire his dedication.

OHHHH boy. I'll be a bit sad if this gets locked because I'll assume Zwei!! is a dead game. For English, anyway. I wonder if it's really active again according to SkyeWelse, even if it's just slightly, since I check the bofgames site maybe every other week it seems like nothing worth an update for I honestly wouldn't want to give an update that "we're still dead, lol" either, if that were the case, though.
