I haven't touched Valkyria yet, but I can tell you that Jeanne d'Arc, while awesome, does not have any of those things you are looking for.

Koei will not miss out on releasing a Musou game over here. :P They make too much money on the braindead crap cuz Musou Lemmings will buy them up without a thought! Maybe so, but Hokuto no Ken (aka Fist of the North Star) wasn't as popular overseas as, say, Gundam, and from what I can tell, Hokuto Musou is pretty different from most Musou games. But, I mean that in a good way. I don't think it'll be a God Hand 2, but it'll be pretty close.

I think my big thing with strategy RPGs is that either (A) combat takes too long, or (B) there's nothing BUT combat, with little to no exploration or talking to townsfolk or anything. Basically, when I play an RPG, I need it to be more than just combat and cutscenes. I need to be able to move around and explore, too, or else it just doesn't feel right to me. And even if I can move around and explore, I need the battles to go by relatively quickly. So as long as there's some form of exploration, and as long as the battles don't drag on forever, I might just like certain tactical RPGs. I don't know if that describes Valkyria Chronicles or Jeanne d'Arc or not - I just know they've been recommended to me. I'm pretty much like that too actually. :'D That's the very reason I'm so stuck to RPGs infact! I love exploring around and talking to all the townspeople, examining little inane objects and watching the interaction between my characters. Usually, endless battles and grinding bores me to no end. :'D But... somehow, even with all that, I somehow love SRPGs greatly? Weird? I think it's basically for me, if a game manages to balance itself out with a strong and very gripping storyline, I am kind of willing to overlook all that. And quite often, in such situations, if my town visit is reduced down to a mere examining of a menu to shop in, I think my mind just starts overworking and adding little bits to the story that are just not there. That is..... the conversations with the shopkeepers/townpeople/barkeeps/etc. and the exploration. :''''D But hm... You just made me realize... I don't think I've touched many SRPGs ever since I got my PS2. Which is.... kind of a long time. Unless if one counts Kessen and Romance of the Three Kingdoms....?

^ I'd say that depends on how well the battle system is done. If it's unique and the fights aren't repetitive (like they tend to be in many non-tactical JRPGs) then it may very well be worth it.

I'm still waiting for the JRPG that actually has a FUN real-time arena-based battle system (as in, random encounters). None of the Tales or Star Ocean games I've tried have been fun at all; Tales of Graces might fulfill my needs, but I can't really say since I can't play it.
I'm really picky about my action, anyway.

Oh man, if I demanded the same from actual action games and action RPGs I'd never finish an ARPG...
For some reason, this makes me want to replay Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

DO IT.
I'm actually considering buying Ninja Gaiden Black off of XBLA. I only got to rent the original Xbox game once to play on my brother's system, about 5 years ago.
I also need to get back to playing Ninja Gaiden II after I finish Bayonetta on Hard...

None of the Tales or Star Ocean games I've tried have been fun at all; Tales of Graces might fulfill my needs, but I can't really say since I can't play it. I'm really picky about my action, anyway. Actually, I rather prefer a turn-based system. Except I'd like a GOOD one, too, and they're pretty damn rare. There's pretty much only one game that COMPLETELY satisfies me with its TB system. Totally disagreed. I find very few traditional JRPGs repetitive in the slightest. Even ones with extremely simplistic battle systems. I think it's because the battles are so short, and there are so many other aspects to the game (towns, cutscenes, etc.), I don't have time to get tired of them, and I begin to miss them after I've gone for a while without them. -Tom If you played FF1 with its ridiculous encounter rate and never thought "man this is annoying" then you should put that on your resume cause you seem to fit well for clerical work ^_____^ Seriously though, I the towns in the older JRPGs are pretty boring. Some of the new ones may be better, but they never get ported to PC. So the towns are usually small with little to do. Also, no matter how fabulous other game aspects are, if the combat is boring then it's, well, boring. And the reason you don't like the more combat-centered games is because you're used to the boring repetitive gaming systems from classic JRPG. My point is, if the game devs actually spend some time making battles that you wouldn't mind to last for hours, then it's fine if the game's lacking otherwise. That's the traditional h'n's appeal. It's honestly better to have fewer well thought-out battles than constant one-shot random monster fights that don't even pose a challenge. For combat centered games, that is.

They made some changes with DW6 and it ended up being a boring piece of crap anyway! I'm still wondering why I even bothered to buy it. Woe to my lemming tendencies. TT~ Anyway, I've yet to watch the gameplay vids of the Hokuto Musou game to see how different it is. :|

I agree with that to an extent. If there are going to be lots of random encounters, then they had better be simple and quick, otherwise the game is going to blow (this is what happened with the original Persona). If they are simple and quick, however, I'm completely alright with it. But I don't necessarily favor that approach more than the "fewer in number, but more intricate" approach.

I don't know if you made this up or not, but I love it either way. XD Sorry to slip into "ad mode," but I'm actually quite touched that my opinions mean so much to you, so I couldn't resist appending to them - which probably sucks for you, since it just adds to your backlog! No no, please do advertise! I'm too spacey for forums, and reply in a pretty haphazard manner if at all. But I've been led to a lot of wonderful things in the past just by hanging around the internet and reading what others have to say. Some people seem to hate being told 'You really have to play / watch / read so-and-so!', but I really like people taking the time to tell me about what they've enjoyed. Anyway, I don't actually own a Wii for Opoona, though I remember you making some very sunny posts about it back when you were playing it. I'll keep it in mind for when I (eventually) pick one up. And I'll keep an eye out for Addie's Present when I'm in Japan with my mom this summer, along with that ever elusive copy of Moon. I underestimated just how neat second hand stores in Japan are the last time I went, and quickly ran out of suitcase space. This time I shall go prepared! Oh, and there's no reason that you should be touched. You're the one who helped me, not the other way around. XD Besides, I have a habit of making a big deal out of things that are kind of insignificant to other people. D: Sooo...sorry for not letting it go, even after all these years. I really was up and down like a yo-yo back then, and the Popolocrois games made me smile a lot. I know it was just a little thing. But it's hard for me now, being as happy as I am, to look back on all the little acts of kindness I received from others then without thinking that maybe they added up to something much bigger. ^_^ I'm kind of surprised that my babbles too could help influence someone's 'want to play!'-list. And more than slightly worrying. X'D Now I'm half scared that Fai shall pop in the G.U. games and after attempting to go through a bit of it she'll be like 'Wat this mad girl talketh about?!' *Yakra stab* Well I'd start with the original four anyway, as I'm kinda picky about playing stuff in order. And I already own Infection. So it's not like you're making me go out and buy anything if I end up not liking them. ^^ If anything, you're just helping me get my money's worth out of something that's sat on my shelf for far too long. D: And while I can't speak for anyone else, don't be too put off by all my grumbling about the Star Ocean series! The only one I really didn't like was 3, and even that was more a somewhat messy game that disagreed with me than something that was just out and out bad. There was lot of good (and almost good) mixed in with all the stuff I didn't like, and I can see why someone else might really like it. ^^; So do try, especially if you like your tri-Ace~! I've never been hugely keen on them anyway, outside of the first Valkyrie Profile.

The only Star Ocean game I found good was Second Evolution for the PSP. First Departure wasn't bad, it was just kinda average if you ask me. SO3 was pretty bad, though, you spent way too much time on that damn medieval planet. I haven't played SO4 yet, but the International PS3 version is gonna be out soon, so that's subject to chance.

I'd have to agree with Little Ralph. That is perhaps one of the coolest games I've ever picked up with wyrd's recommendation, along with the Japanese version of Um Jammer Lammy -- I mean, it IS in English, AND I bypass the HORRID American censorship. I mean, replacing Hell with a fucking island?! Seriously? And the awesome cutscene to some... cheesy-ass I don't know what to call it, "the game is rewinding" bullshit? Either way, wyrdwad's suggestions are worth listening to, his reviews and importing prowess have earned my respect! Even if we disagree, wyrd KNOWS what he's talking about, and he's never really lead me astray before! // I'll also vouch for: - Opoona (Wii) - Chibi Robo (Wii) - Addie's Present (PSN - JP) - Intelligent Qube Final (PSN - JP) ...and if you like games such as Chulip and Chibi Robo, I also recommend Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland (DS - UK). Wyrdwad should also get Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, someday! No Love De Lic fan should be without it!

schlagwerk - Considering that I.Q. Final came out for the PSX (presumably prior to I.Q. Mania on the PSP), probably not.

schlagwerk - Considering that I.Q. Final came out for the PSX (presumably prior to I.Q. Mania on the PSP), probably not. Ooooh. IQ Final on PSN is a rerelease of the PSX title. ..so yeah, IQ Mania is the newer(est) version of Intelligent Qube.. and it's portable!

Oh, but you forget, my dear friend, "New Play Control! Chibi-Robo!" for the Wii! I had no idea that I.Q. Final would still be the definitive I.Q., even after they released Mania! That's pretty awesome! // In my defense, I DID play Chibi-Robo on my Wii, though. I LOVE backwards-compatibility!

I.Q. Final is actually better than I.Q. Mania, though, believe it or not! There are more game modes, more playable characters, and more endings. And if you buy it from PSN on your PSP, it's just as portable! *looking at my copy of IQ Mania* .... poo

But why make a new one, if you can't top or add to the original?
...Oh wait, wait wait! I think I know this one! They're selling it on PSN... they're selling it for the PSP... hmmm... it's a cheap marketing strategy! They're making and selling slightly different variations, so that their fanbase will collect them in hopes of having everything that the I.Q. series has to offer! That's a theory, at least!
