Yeah, but they were technically optional side quests that furthered your characters without breaking them. In FFVI you got more party members for the final, 3-party dungeon as well as more character building in each of the side quest scenarios. In Chrono Trigger you got more character building and items, but I'll be if Lavos still isn't difficult your first time through the game.
These days side quests either require you to be max level when they're god bosses, or reward you with content that trivializes the rest of the game.
These classic examples are more an experiment in open-ended gameplay if anything..

I can only think of some immortal Star Trek: The Next Generation lines further immortalized by their inclusion in the TNG pinball game.
"Bon jour mon capitan. Let's play a little game" "Q! We don't have time for your games!"

I'll just take it that "buyfagging" means to try to bum around for items you are looking for like asking for a cigarette (fag) and not some childishly offensive phrase the likes you'd expect to hear in a grade school lunch room.
To be increasingly unhelpful with you actually finding this figure, I didn't even know they released a SEGA Gals Collection 3. I wonder who is in it. I used to own 1 & 2 but now have only kept the Phantasy Star-related characters. Holy crap if Collection 3 has Rika/Fal from PSIV in it...
About the only productive thing I have to say is that I purchased my 1 & 2 sets from eBay back in the day. I'm mostly just wary of sellers from China/Hong Kong/Taiwan for fear of getting a lower-quality general Asian release instead of the Japanese figures, but with trading arts and gashapon figs I've had good success, even with sets like my Xenosaga KOS-MOS trading figures that are actually the Hong Kong release, but are good quality.

I don't think we're getting it at all, most likely. Rumor is, the Hell Temple is the reason the WiiWare version was delayed for so long and eventually canceled, and the only way it could be released at all was by removing it. Though I have no idea why that would be the case -- best I can figure is it had something to do with the reward for Hell Temple, but that sounds kind of fishy to me. The ESRB certainly wouldn't have any problems with that, so it would've had to have been Nintendo saying no -- but that also seems unlikely... -Tom Everything I heard was because La Mulana hit the WiiWare file size and their best way to make it fit was to remove Hell Temple. Though I do agree that we're prolly not seeing in the West. I'm just hoping the Steam version gets greenlit and then I'll buy that. Rockband Blitz was a similar problem on XBLA recently. The soundtrack itself was a free download because it would've driven the game over the file size limit if inlcuded.

Sega put no budget into the localization of PSPo/PSP 1.. or PSU for that matter. It says a lot for Ambition of the Illuminus, ep.3, and PSP2 that they chose to pull the voices from story quests entirely. PSP2 they actually had decent actors (well, Emilia is annoying but she's supposed to be), but they pulled all talking other than in-combat speech and cutscenes. That and Shizuru didn't use a different voice when talking as Karmharl as I've mentioned above. Surprisingly thanks to their laziness there were 2 big reveals that involve someone's voice changing that are lost in the US version.
Looking back on it, the voice quality wasn't so bad in PSU ep.1...other than Ethan. It was like the original Tenchi OVA dubs where Tenchi's VA was the worst out of everyone. Ethan always sounds like he is trying to deliver his lines as fast as possible while out of breath.
Man.. all this talk makes me wanna play PSP2i and PSO2 again. Good thing I'll actually have time this weekend for PSO2 now that La Mulana is out of the way.

And the thing is that PSU ep.1 was the lamest story out of all of PSU ('cept maybe Portable 1). Ep.2 from the Ambitions of the Illuminous introduced Howzer.. and lots of genocide. Ep.3 (playable online only) was freaking awesome, including the final boss battle. Then there were a series of story missions that you could replay to do things differently. The final mission would play out slightly different each time until finally you get The emergent AI Magashi and Vivianne from PSPo joining up with you to fight Dark Falz.. only to have loli power save the day thanks to Ethan's sister Lumia. Only good thing to come out of the loli power ending was Lumia reading Magashi's mind and telling you that he likes you. My character's reaction shot: ...then clarifies no, not that way Phantasy Star Portable 2 ep.1 & 2 were a little better story-wise. But ep.2 is only in Japanese and the US version of ep.1 is severely neutered due to Karmharl's voice being removed. Man, hearing the pure scenery chewing cheese of his Japanese voice every time he talked was a highlight, even if I didn't fully understand what he was saying. Though I guess this did come from PSU ep.1

I don't agree with Wyrd. Phantasy Star Universe (PSU) tried to be an action RPG and failed miserably at it. Plus the offline mode is weak and all the online servers have been shut down (it had a monthly fee anyhow). Phantasy Star Portable 2 is the result of tweaking the gameplay mechanics of PSU and it actually turned out well.
Do note that all Phantasy Star games after/including Phantasy Star Online are dungeon crawlers instead of straight up RPGs. That means that while there is a story to all the games, the primary drive is to keep running areas to get the best drops, the biggest swords, and the shiniest shinies.

Lord of Vermilion is their interactive arcade card game, right? Man I always wanted to play that. I saw a bunch of interactive card games in Japan in 2007, but didn't want to throw down the money to try any of them. KoF '98 collab is just Kyo & Iori? Lame.. needs more Rugal.. doubly so if his special is the Dead End Screamer, given that it is '98 Rugal. hehhehheh

Beat La Mulana remake tonight and found out promptly that in the WiiWare version Hell Temple is DLC that is not available in the West right now, nor is a release date known.
21 hours spent, not counting lost time due to deaths or mindless wandering without saving. A majority of the game I solved on my own, but I did get stuck at a few points.. so humiliatingly that I can remember each specific one. Also didn't get all the NPCs in the ending sequence, but did get all the items and .exes

Nothing so fast-paced and actiony as Ys (and few games are), but Phantasy Star Portable 2 (or preferably Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity if you can Japanese) is an amazing action RPG game for the PSP. I've put several hundred hours into just a single character in PSP2(i).. that's impressive for a portable game.
Also there is Phantasy Star Online 2 for PC that is free to play in Japan right now and is slated for a 2013 Q1 release in the West. The action is even more in depth than PSP2i, but right now still is going through balancing issues. It's so grindy at the moment that even Japanese players are complaining. Hunter would be more like what you are looking for, but I enjoy the Ranger class because it feels like an over-the-shoulder fps.

I concur that Ys has been about the action and the music over the story. Which worked well for it, Falcom used to be good at fashioning a simple story that told enough to not lose the player, but left enough unsaid for the player to use their own intelligence to fill in the blanks (which in the long run usually serves to make the game more memorable to the player).
Ys Origin was painfully wordy, but was still a great action game when you couldn't understand a lick of what was being said. Ys SEVEN was the first step toward anime RPG mediocrity IMO.

La-Mulana is better than Cave Story, IMO. It's just a more solid gameplay experience and there is a lot more to the game.

Speaking about underrated licensed Genesis games, I also almost picked up Home Alone at the same event. I've had the 360 Ghostbusters game since its release though sadly have never finished it. For the first week I played multiplayer every day with some friends on the East coast and it was a blast. I just wish the arenas were a little larger.

One of the local arcades reset the settings on a certain ticket game that I can play for a 300-400% profit. I once got a 3DS for about $75 back when they were $250.
They have a 3G Vita, and I was tempted to try to go back this week before they realize what I did last night and adjust the difficulty again, but it would take me an estimated $100-120 and 5-6 hours of straight playing to do.. also hoping that they are not mean and don't kick me out or shut down the game during that period if they were to realize what I was up to.

I learned Hiragana and Katakana before really knowing any Japanese through just writing repetition and memorization. But actually using it to read whatever you can is really what makes you remember it.

My haul from this year's Retro Gaming Expo Turns out Sega CD Flashback redid all the iconic cutscenes in crappy CG and has very loud music in the background when the game is usually mostly quiet. Way to "fix" it.

I like Reah most. She always seemed more mature than Feena, plus she can blow a mean harmonica <_<

One of the best music tracks I have ever heard: My original response was gonna have like 4-5 videos in it, but yeah Harmony and Lovely is a good song, though what kept me from liking it was the complete change around the middle of the song. Also I feel that most IIDX songs are designed to be 2 minutes long and just feel overly drawn out when stretched to album length. Reaching into beatmania IIDX alone for beautiful music, my fav is madrugada by PINK PONG. Evergreen by kors k and Infinite Prayer by L.E.D.-G are close behind .Also talking about Ryu*: Mind MappingAnyhow, here have the amazing video for the IIDX version of Harmony and Lovely: Other misc responses: I was surprised about La Mulana as well! I have the points to buy it now, but haven't had the time to pick it up or play it. Stupid Guild Wars 2, PSO2, and Borderlands 2. I like to remember when I first got to Dark Fact on Nightmare in Ys I Complete and thought he was impossible to beat. Then I went to show some friends and beat him on my second try. That's classic Ys difficulty for you. If you take away the easy mode training wheels, you can learn to overcome the difficulty just by playing through them in order because the different levels of difficulty scale so well.
